Why no love for acrobatics athletics or speed?

The 'A dance in fire' series also has some good examples of acrobacy, as does 'The mystery of Talara'.

I have no issue with those examples, what I take exception to is this:

Acrobatics and Athletics was ridiculous to the point of silliness in Oblivion. With a high skill and some skooma, this is possible:

That is a wholly intentional boosting of the skill using glitches and exploits.
That is absolutely not possible with 100 athletics, again, which takes 95 hours of continuous running to achieve, not even if boosted. I suspect that video has to do with the glitch/ bug that allows you to bypass the potion cooldown timer, letting you drink as many as you want.

And even still, it is a better game that includes at least the option than a game with a lot of hard caps, boxing in the gaming experience even more.

So guess there's no solution other then creating a new system for leveling jumping and running. Because that's not a waste of developer time. For nearly non-existent pay-off. Face it they've gone the way of climbing and levitation. Sure a small number of fans like having silly little niche things, but really they're not important enough to justify paying someone to code and test and integrate them.
Yes. You're right. Being able to move at different speeds and jump different heights (and have different amounts of strength or agility or intelligence or pretty much anything else) has gone the way of climbing and levitation.

And yes. You're right. The fans that want all those things aren't important. Or, at least, they're not important right now, because Beth knows that they're a captive market.

And that's going to last until whichever company it is puts out the open world RPG that's going to include all the sorts of things that Beth has decided to jettison in their ongoing attempts to svck up to action/adventure fans.

And then that market isn't going to be captive any more. It's going to be GONE.

Or he just bound mass enchanted rings. I had several characters that required a speed or acrobatics above 100, but not as extreme as that video. My game never lagged or had problems rendering my skills/attributes.

Nothing like traversing Shivering Isles as an Acrobat without ever touching the ground.

I HATE how stuck up some people on this forum are. Just because YOU didn't personally like something, the people that did shouldn't be able to enjoy it anymore? Okay. Do EVERYONE a favor and get over yourselves, please.

Yes, of course.

I did level a character in Oblivion with such skills years ago and still felt it was a bit much though.

The problem I had with it was that it was too easily sustainable. If I were to change it up with Skyrim, I would have made fast running an additional set of perks that trigger with holding sprint for a few seconds, that further enhances speed like a short burst that moves you at double the normal sprinting speed.

With jumping perks, I would have had large leaps possible by holding sprint while stationary for a few moments, then either jumping straight up or making a running leap. Their greater benefits should not be largely passive like in the past, and instead should be active and consume stamina.

And again, I disagree with your last statement. I know people dislike limits, but they are sometimes needed. Maybe not hard caps of course, bit diminishing returns instead.

I have no issue with those examples, what I take exception to is this:

I have no idea if the maximum running speed in Ob was too fast, I didn't play the game long enough to find out and one of the reasons was that game's already overbearing use of restrictions. If it was too fast, with out magical or alchemical or enchanted enhancement then they should have fixed it and not removed it.

With enhancements, then yes, you should be able to exceed common limitations, else you will soon end up arguing for practical and earthly restrictions on magic itself - where do you draw the line and what kind of game remains?

Another lore correct example comes from Morrowind, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Scroll_of_Icarian_Flight#Scroll_of_Icarian_Flight , these you can find within minutes of starting the game. What a fantastic find, what a fantastic idea to challenge the players imagination so early in the game and what a fantastic achievement to create a world that actually supports such imagining. Of course, no one is forcing you to use such enhancements, and indeed, I did not make use of the more excessive potions my character could create, but oh, I found such joy knowing I could make them.

Yes, I absolutely remember that. In fact, I would wager many first time players happened upon that unlucky guy right out of Seyda-Neen. I had always regarded it as more of an in-game joke or easter egg of some kind though.

And I know that many players took that first jump and died somewhere interesting, or got lucky and landed in water... There must have been hundreds of stories, memorable moments related to those scrolls alone. They were fun, sadly it is this kind of fun that has been drained from the series, because some think it stupid and some think it unbalanced and I do not think this is fair.

I was just thinking if i had never played an ES game and came across that vid first because my buddy had said look for some vids on this game because its cool .I probably would have never tryed it because its to out there for me i would have just thaught well we must have different taste in games would have been my loss .Just was wondering if that could play a roll i admitt it would have been my mistake but its the truth.

Also one way to fix something is to remove it .They obviously felt it was broke .If i have a hole in my muffler i can patch it or remove and replace it with a new one depending on what i think is best .They just disagreed with some on the best fix.I would of been fine with makeing the old ones work properly as im more used to the old system of at least showing str speed and such not so much that i think we should actively pick them as i feel in game actions should determine them but i do understand how you could miss them.I will just wait and see if i miss the things that arent in as we have been told these things in some form are in the game and just function differently or arent selected by the pc.

Personaly im a sprint button fan so im happy with what ive seen in the speed changes so far and the no jumping on the moon effect but that doesnt mean im happy every one couldnt have it thier way .Its just an opinon.

In my opinion, I found the ability to customize my characters speed and nimbleness went a long way to define him. As a thief/ assassin I loved leaping over guards, accessing areas that shouldn't be reached and out running the wolves. My character had almost 180 acrobatics and a 140 speed, it was hilarious! As of now it looks like every character will move the same with slight variations in speed because of armor... cool so just like fallout. Is there at least perks to help? Because I will be maxing that out.

I also don't have a PC so I can't just get a mod :(.

Actually in Fallout you can increase your run speed by increasing your Agility SPECIAL Stat as well as by taking certain perks.

From the looks of it, the longer you sprint you're speed seems to slowly increase. At least that's how it looks to me.

As for jumping, maybe you can charge your jump like Carmalita from Sly 3. The more stamina you have, the faster you could move or the higher you could jump. It would work for me.

Right, because it's completely implausible for a human to outrun a horse on Earth.

OH WAIT :o

Nirn isn't Earth, and we're not playing as humans (as we know them).

...

People really need to stop using real-life comparisons as a justification for removing features from a fantasy game.

If we can run faster than a horse, what's the point of having horses, let alone spending resources and time to animate them, texture them etc? Why not just have them as ambient objects since they will obviously serve no purpose? Also, the it's Nirn argument is really getting old. Yes, I know it's different from Earth, but there are still constants in the world that draw parallels to the way things work on Earth or most other fantasy media.

In a world where without magic you can punch out a 30 ton lizard, running faster than a horse seems kind of tame.

I tell you this much: as soon as the CK comes out I'm going into it and adjusting racial speeds and starting encumbrance. It's stupid that they all start with the same values.

You probably can make your character run faster, all they did was get rid of the athletics and acrobatics skill, and speed. I'm guessing stamina will increase player speed.

I'm a freaking ninja! I pride myself on agility and speed. And everyone will be as quick as I will when I start a game? Messed up, IMO.

Id say the thing is if your charatcer NEEDS it your character has some way of getting it.

locks.. there is magic and skill..

healing magic and alchemy and food.

running what you wear and hold. because everyone needs to run.

jumping.. again controled in such a way everyone can jump because everyone needs to.

Because some people actually RP in Sky and dont make JOAT that do whatever just becasue they can. With this logic, there's no reason to have different weapons, or different ways to accomplish anything.

I sware it looked like the player's speed continued to slowly increase the longer Todd continued to run. Someone else should correct me if I'm just seeing things I want to see, or if it's really happening. :cryvaultboy:

I would agree with you if your character started the game faster than a horse. THAT would be pointless.

You're missing the point of an rpg. If you're a knight or barbarian, you might ride a horse for extra speed in travel. A more speedy/athletic ranger may skip using the horse and go by foot, using their strength of speed/agility. It's called options.

Just like picking a lock vs. using a spell to open.......options. It's not that hard to understand.

But unlike picking a lock by via hand or spell you have the choice to do what you want. In oblivion you did not have the choice how fast your character went due to you needing to walk/run places thus increasing your speed.
