Would you take immortality?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:22 pm

No, even with all those conditions I wouldn't do it. Having the option of ending your life at a time of your choosing seems to defeat the purpose of being immortal in the first place.

Immortal as in I will never die via any cause, like ageing, disease, and attacks that would kill a normal man, yeah I'd take it.

Though I would be miserable for the 1st century or so but I'd get over it, I'd be the Devil walking
And what would you do if someone cut you into little pieces and scattered your severed limbs?
This is one of the reasons why I don't want immortality.

I'm pretty sure that is way to far beyond something that would kill a normal man.

Of course.
Since I don't believe in any kind of afterlife, I sure as HELL would take biological immortality.
Also, since I consider things like "soul" and "spirit" utter nonsense I do firmly believe I could still end my life if I wished so - just obliterate my body or at least the brain.
I would dedicate my immortality to science, and over the centuries write books of history to teach people what it was like to live in year X. To put it short, I would use my immortality for the benefit of others.
I will give you 200 years max before your mental condition makes you unable to do even that.

Then even if it didnt, humanity will die. You will be alone, you will be bored, and likely insane as a result.
I also dislike the idea of having to kill myself. It implies I am giving up on life. Unless I can kill myself inddirectly somehow.

Being immortal means living forever, and forever means forever.

Immortality in general then? No, the fun of life is to experience all you can, then pass on what you learned to your descendents/protege, and et cetera. Would I want to live in an elaborate Life Support system like Mr. House's? Sure, provided I had the same security. But with complete god-like immortality, life isn't life, it's simply existence, and that completely detracts from the richness of each new experience and sight we see.

What man wouldn't, if offered? We're all afraid of death. Hell yes I'd take it.

Time already moves too fast, and it only seems like it's moving faster every day.

I'm not afraid of death per se, I'd like to die at an old age. Would I accept an extended life? Sure. But to live on forever? That just removes the excitement out of living, of reflecting near the end of your life the amazing things you did in your life, places you saw. Being immortal would just blur everything together in a bleak monotony of day to day routines.

I don't know. I kinda don't want to see my family and future children etc die before me, life will probably get alot boring aswell after a couple hundreds of years.

I would take the immortality so I won't age, but I would still kill myself when I turn 100 or something.

Gotta agree with Colonel Marty, his points are similiar to mine.

I think that whole "living forever removes the excitement of living" idea is hogwash. It's been drummed into us across the media and art board simply because, as mortal beings who die, we want to make ourselves feel better.

About dying.

Just you wait. One day we'll meet an alien race who lives forever, and they'll be like:

"You guys die? why would you want to do that?"
"Well living isn't really living without death."
"Uh huh. Riiiiiiiight. Have fun with that."

kinda ruins the whole life thing if you can't die, plus living forever would totally screw with your perception of time after a few 1000 years. Am i rich? Do i have to explain to the goverment why i'm still alive after 100 years looking like a 20 year old? Do i constantly have to work out to maintain my current level of health? Will i be exactly the same...like the highlander (without the badass sword skills)?

No i wouldn't take immortality, with or without a cost. Now a slightly extended period of healthy living i would take, like living to 150 without medical support would be sorta cool i guess, if not i'm fine at dying at 82

How would you do that? If your left leg is in China and your head is in Bolivia etc. and your brain control you movements.

immortality is bad for humanity.

old people tend to be stubborn with thier ideas. if people were immortal then eventually there would be stasis in terms of progress.
also, if people lived forever there would NEED to be controls on birth. laws don't work, look at the 'war on drugs'. people still find ways to get high, what makes you think it'd be any different with laws against having children? there'd need to be a medical system in place to stop people from having kids - and that in itself could doom humanity. mammals ability to breed fast and often is the reason why they survived when the dinosaurs didn't. ever play mass effect? look at the krogan. dying race because they can't reproduce. there was a kurt vonnegut book i read where something similar happened and humanity went out with a whimper rather than the bang all our current 'end of humanity' scenarios point to.
lastly, the human brain isn't designed to live longer than 40-50 years. our medical skills in keeping the body alive for longer have advanced much faster than our brains ability to evolve. that's why we have parkinsons and alzheimers. imagine a person who lived to be 500 years old and all the useless infomation stored in thier brain. something would have to give.

so in short, no. i'd pass that cup in an instant

Well, nobody said EVERYONE had to be immortal. Just you, really. Imagine if it was a wish to a magic genie.

Those would rot and the new limbs would grow from my body - my heart would be indestructible so nothing could kill or stop it and everything would regrow from that if they were destroyed

I lot of my family and friends are dead now. I wouldn't want this to become the normal experience I had to endure for eternity.

Plus, there is great satisfaction in looking back at the things I've done, the people I've met. To not have an end, life would just be one endless corridor.

Now I have another mission, there will only be one :stare:

I asked my brother this and he said no, because everything will die so he'd die to - as in, the universe will end and when it does he will go with it. I put it to him that he wouldn't die with it because he's immortal, so he'd be the new world and the only factual God like figure in this new world. Still nope he'd die apparently, don't think he understands the not dying part

If this Immortality granted me eternal youth, invulnerability, and the ability to cause groundhog millenia loops, then I'd go for it.
