It's not technically a 'beer' but I love Guinness.

How is it not technically a beer? Guinness is a stout, which is a fairly common variety of beer...

If you're 14.....

EDIT: Although an ice cold G&T on a summer's day is hard to beat. :woot:

Is mixing spirits with soda and stuff a British thing? Because I always hear it in British movies.

Works great for those girly parties too, my wife loves spirits.

Hey man, if you prefer to drink gallons of fattening fluid, be my guest, but you might as well have coke.

so far the only beer that doesn't taste like a sweaty gym sock is Coors Light.

so i guess by default that is my favourite.

although currently i am trying a bunch more since a friend i know works at a distribution for a bottling company so he gives me a bunch of beer to try.

yesterday i tried Killian Irish Red: it was rubbish.

Yeah we get it here. Fairly trashy stuff as an "import" along the same lines as Fosters. I see why Canada and Australia export this stuff... :P

Hey now, easy there...

I only drink Coke when it's paired with rum, or jack.

I thought spirit and mixers were a fairly universal thing? Rum and coke, Jack and coke, Vodka Lime and Soda etc?

I've always been a fan of Rolling Rock with a drop of extra hot hot sauce in there. It sounds gross, but I would highly recommend it!

Also, the Cleveland-based http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes_Brewing_Company makes some killer brews. I would highly recommend just about anything they make, especially the Christmas Ale (only available around Christmas) and the Burning River!

Oh yeh. I saw that thing of Bill Cosby when he talks about why people get drunk. That made me laugh. Your toilet will be your best friend!
Aslo if I get drunk in public I start remembering Ron White's sketch as well :D .

Sierra Nevada.
I don't understand how you can drink Coors, Budweiser, keystone, etc. for the taste. Some nasty stuff. Although the new coors platinum is pretty good.

I really like Guinness but am on a diet so it's off the cards.
I heard about this study that claims that Guinness can actually be good for your heart. Apparently it slows down the buildup of cholesterol in the arteries.

Well food is necessary for survival, alcohol isn't. I hope you can atleast get an idea of what I was trying to say.
The point is there is a difference between people who drink beer because it's the popular thing to do (or to get drunk) and people who appreciate the variety of flavors from around the world in the myriad of brews available. It's no more absurd for people to drink beer for taste as it is for wine enthusiasts to do so.

Well if all someone did was go to the store buying Budweiser, Corona, Miller, Heineken, and so on expecting some vast difference in taste, no wonder they think the way they do.
This is true.

Even though I'm German, I rarely drink beer or alcohol.
Was bedeutet das!

I agree, getting drunk can be fun, just not going that extra mile where puking begins. Generally I stop when I notice myself paying too much attention to how I walk, which usually isn't all that straight, but normally I don't get that drunk anyways. Still, it's fun.
I can't see much fun in getting hammered, especially to the point of being sick for hours afterwards. Not only that, but it's very bad for your health. In general, moderate alcohol consumption has a number of beneficial health effects, but getting drunk never does.

So how come my grandmother isn't dead yet? Besides, I'm not saying that everyone should go out and drink Guinness because it will cure all ailments, I'm simply saying what I have heard.

I didn't think so either but when I worked for Diageo (who own Guinness) they always described it as a beer.

Well... I guess I was wrong! :blush2: That doesn't change the fact that I love Guinness

I think all these categorisations are rather headache-inducing: I heard Guinness described as a porter the other day. I'm not even sure what's the difference between a porter and a stout anyway; seems the former's a bit sweeter and the latter's more bitter, but that's not necessarily an especially useful distinction.

From what I understand, beer is synonymous with lager in North America which might explain some of the confusion. Or "lager beer" as The Chap calls it.

I should really stop thinking so much about all this!

Blimey: that's a lot of reading. I homed in on this particular bit, though: "there is a great deal of disagreement in the brewing world on this subject". I think that sums it up to my satisfaction. That imperial stout stuff looks interesting, though...
