Your most "I'm an idiot" gaming moment.

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 6:38 am

I want to hear some funny stories of  :whistling: nothing to see here moments of idiocy in game.

One of my most memorable was upgrading Morrowind GOTY, unfolding the map, seeing this new city, "ooh, Mournhold eh?", loading up my save, and trying to swim there. After about 15-20 minutes of this, I kinda felt like I actually wasn't going anywhere any more, and gave up. It took me a few days to figure out how to get there...

I generally don't have those kinds of moments since I'm usually pretty focued in the games I play, but sometimes focus leads to arrogance which leads to haste which leads to clumsy mistakes. Was once playing Heroes of Might and Magic 4, a strategy game with a very chess like combat system with turn based combat and movement tiles, with my friend and I had gotten pretty used to the order of combat in a fight against my friend, and me being me I was playing as fast as I could since in most cases I know what move I want to do next and any only occasionally have to slow down to ponder what to do next if whoever I'm competing against completely changes the field of play with his or her move. So anyways I had just made a shot with a ranged unit and I knew next up was a strong melee unit I controlled so I clicked on a tile on my friends side of the battlefield where I intended to move the melee unit but my ranged unit got good morale so I got another shot with it but I was already clicking on the other side of battle and then I could only watch after I did move the melee unit as my friend had his turn where he was able to move in and absolutely slaughter my fragile ranged unit that had just walked into his own army.

He didn't spare me the mistake and I facepalmed.

Fallout new vegas, playing as my tribal character and attempting lonesome road. Yeah, 1 hit kill deathclaws ftw.
Deus ex human revoloution. Being a pacifist, during the playthrough I only kept and upgrded the pistol s my killing weapon. It made the first boss fight, much worse.
Dark souls. Picking the thief class and trying to stick to it. Or beating a boss with lots of souls, dying because you have "power within" active. Then sitting at a bonfire, stopping you from using homeward bone. Then dying to get back to the souls. !20k down the drain.

Theres a endless stair in Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64, and when I was a kid I spent hours running up it until I realised it was impossible.

Not many "I'm an idiot" moments at this date, but there are probably some.

First time I played Fallout 3 I didn't notice the compass, completely missed Megaton, wandered out into the wastes, ended up somewhere near Arefu getting eaten by Mirelurks.

With my first Oblivion character, I chose Assassin as my class, but used a warhammer and heavy armor up until about level 20.

Always tend to make rash moves in games that I would not in real life. This ends with me dying a lot. Enough about how my playstyle.... haha

My last i'm an idiot moment was when I jumped off a high height in Skyrim down into water but it was only an inch deep. It did not end well.

If I can remember a good one it will be posted.

/playing Daggerfall, in Direnni Tower
"Okay, I just need to make sure I don't walk into that one room where the door closes behind me and I get teleported to some far off area in the dungeon, because then I'll get lost for hours like I did last time."
/proceeds to walk into that room
"Crap! Okay. Okay. It's okay. I'll just use Recall to teleport back to the entrance."
...
"Dammit! I forgot to set an Anchor!" :swear:

This has happened about a dozen times.

I am sure there a better ones, though I can't think of anything at the moment.

Anyway, I was playing Skyrim. I was in a dungeon and was pulling a lever, though it wasn't dropping the bridge I was thinking it would. Scoured the entire area, only to come back and realize that the lever needed was hidden in a corner of the room, right behind the lever I was pulling initially . . .

Tricky, tricky.

I have plenty of these moments, but I only happen to remember one right now.
In Skyrim, during the "Forbidden Legend" quest, I spent hours looking for the damn lever to drop the bridge. Then I realised the lever was right behind me and I didn't notice it thanks to my brightness settings :wallbash:

The most recent (I have a lot so I don't remember most of them) was trying to look up and down while playing DOOM 2

In Skyrim I tried to take on Kvenel the Tongue at level 8 with a two-handed melee character. . .several times. . .didn't work well.

In God of War 2 there was a room where the far wall spit a cloud of fire at you when you pulled a lever. I died in the room dozens of times trying to find a way to avoid it. The next time I loaded the game I realized there was a statue in the previous room that you could push in front you to block the fire. So yeah, that was dumb. Always check your surroundings :D

Not really my fault since the game is super duper vague about objectives, but in LEGO Indiana Jones 2 (playing through with my girlfriend), we saw what we needed, but couldn't get to it. We ran around for about 20 minutes trying to figure out what to do. Finally, I broke and brought up the walkthrough. It said "Female characters can jump higher than male characters". ...really? How the hell was I supposed to know that? Changed to a female character and easily jumped up to the ledge.

Ugh.

Forgot to check corners on my first tactics run and got my whole squad killed at Rock Falls, plus I just save over every other save game so my most recent save was right when I lost two guys.

Saved over two 80+ hour characters in Oblivion.

Took me about two hours to figure out lockpicking in Oblivion. I felt so stupid when I finally got it...

I spent about ten minutes humping the side of a Skyrim mountain trying to get to the top. I thought I was slick, getting past the natural borders like that. Turns out there was a path on the other side of a rock that led right up.
