Almost 5 months later... what do you think of Skyrim?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 6:53 am

The game has so much wrong with it its not funny as i stated in a previous post.'The game is shallow it has no branching narrative which makes questing extremely linear. There is little to no decision making or consequences the world does not notice what you have accomplished or treat you based on what you have done. The NPC's are the most wooden shambolic NPC's I have seen in a long time, picking a race does not mean diddly squat in the long term face it it's as shallow as it gets".
1. Ok, compared to what other open world game? Where are all of these other RPGs with the complex branching narratives you're talking about?

2. Objectivity, man. Arguments require objectivity. All of these things only prove that the design goals for the game don't match with your expectations/desires. If you were looking for a racing game then there would be things missing from the game that you were looking for as well (race cars, for one). Would it be "wrong?" No. You need to differentiate between "wrong" and "I don't like it."

This is what is wrong with the game the whole open world aspect of the game is let down by everything that is wrong.Everything in this game is painfully easy it is like it was aimed at the toddler market.Playing Skyrim requires about as much thought as it does to play Call of duty that is bad for a RPG.Mind you it seems the norm now days to strip back RPG's to the bare minimum.
Easy as in difficulty or easy as in complexity? Have you tried increasing the difficulty? If you're talking about complexity...why would you want the game to be complex? Doesn't the terrible PC UI make it hard enough?

I'm just going to ignore the Call of Duty reference from now on. The comparison is that ridiculous.

My opinion has changed over the last five months.

But I was captivated by the great scenery and the sprawling, large world full of locations. I completed all the guild quests and the main quest. I still have a few Daedric quests and other side quests. The story of the main quest is mediocre at best. The guild quests are very short.

I haven't played Skyrim in over a month because I'm waiting for the dlc. I'm a big fan of this game.

I've been playing New Vegas (even previous TES games) and it made me realize how easy Skyrim is. It now caters to the player. Skyrim is a very light RPG. But this game is a great fantasy action-adventure/RPG.

Basically what you are saying is it's alright to be light in other areas because the world is open. That is such a cop out you are making an excuse for the developer.Yeah my expectations were high I came from a game with a great narrative and characters The Witcher 2 and got handed a shallow depressing waste of time.

I would say Skyrim is a pretty nifty fun game. As someone said above, I prefer other TES titles to this one, but that's just me.

I still play it for hours straight - Wood Elf Assassin ftw..

EDIT: they really need to fix the bugs in the game currently. Sometimes I find myself just falling through the ground and not able to get back out. I haven't been following what Bethesda has been doing after the game, but I hope they're trying to fix these bugs. (Infact, this is my first time on the site since Skyrim was released.)

No, I'm not making an excuse for the developer. What I'm saying is that what's "alright" and what's "not alright" depend on what you're looking for in a game. Branching quest-lines with lasting impact on the environment were obviously not a design goal for the developer. This is most likely because things like that are VERY difficult to do in an open-world game without introducing a lot of bugs. If you wanted a game with branching quest-lines that have a lasting impact on the game world then Skyrim is not the game for you. Also, if you were looking for a game with race cars, Skyrim is not the game for you. That doesn't make the game Call of Duty.

The Witcher 2 is a great game. However, if you're looking for an open-world game then it's not the game for you. See what I did there?

Vanilla Skyrim is garbage. Modded, however... not so bad.

For me, the best visually design game in TES but unfortunately, it is the shallowest game in TES. Two things in particular that I didn't like was how small the world felt and the voice acting was cheesy in many instances; many one liners. The marketing said Skyrim will have over 70 actors voicing the game but I swear to God that if someone had told me Skyrim had only 8 voice actors I would have believed him. I hear the same exact voice for the beggar, bartender, and Jarl. To hear the voice in a row, in other words, to listen to a beggar and immediately going to the Jarl and hear the same voice is immersion breaking.

Agreed Lorca. Possibly the greatest aspect of text based conversation was that no one sounded the same lol

I've only noticed one thing different about Skyrim from previous Elder Scrolls game. I haven't played it as much. I played Morrowind all the way up until Oblivion's release (and even afterwards) and I played Oblivion all the way up to Skyrim's release. I stopped playing Skyrim after two months, tried picking it up again, but no matter how I dtfferently I act or how I make my character, ever playthrough feels the same.

Best computer game I ever played.

Seriously, I played games since the days of Pong, Ultima, Elite, Krondor, Baldur etc.. This is best, bar none. Though there is still room to make it better by making it more hardcoe and immersive, e.g.:

hypothermia risk by stepping in ice cold water; having to hunt and eat food; dead-is-dead; no fast travel etc.
I want a bit beyond the lowest common denominator.

Best of all the Elder Scrolls games. Can't wait for the DLC.

Obliviously, it could be better, like EVERY game. But still in my top five 360 games of all time.

I enjoyed and still do....

But is like the old rag doll, its mouth crooked and missing an eye, smells like old cold hot dog water and certainly has a few lumps in the stuffing.

There is just sooooo much broken in it, but it's still an Elder Scrolls game.

shallow, vapid, horrible endings to every questline, repetitive faction quest lines, horrible loot system that does not reward you for exploring

A vast ocean 3 inches deep

A good description, It didn't last past playing threw the quest one time and goign to all the places once over three charcters to find the game pretty lacking in most departments.

I'm disgusted by the lack of either Destruction scaling or spellcrafting. The game needed one or the other to be my number one favorite game of all time. Still, it's an amazing game and takes the number two spot behind Morrowind.

^This. I still thoroughly enjoy Skyrim though. I have been playing it almost everyday since launch day.

no zelda, no dark souls, no portal, no rockstar anything.
Dark Souls a contender to Skyrim?

Better than Oblivion, not as good as Morrowind. One thing it really did right was develop controversial lore. That is, epic forum debates.

I haven't played in a while, maybe a month. The game did not last as long for me as Oblivion did. And of course Oblivion did not last as long as Morrowind did. Needless to say I am waiting for DLC to come out to bring me back, but even that won't do too much beside a few more hours. Ultimately I did not find the world of Skyrim, the dungeons, the quests, the characters, the weapons and unique items, etc. to be as interesting or satisfying as the worlds of Oblivion and Morrowind.

The game has gotten better and better with each successive playthru and I'm on my 5th. I can understand people complaining about a lack of choice and consequence, but to me that is the appeal of Skyrim. The quests are like building blocks in creating the story of your Dragonborn - who you help, and who you don't help. In Skyrim you are responsible for your own actions - there's no evil-meter to tell you if you're a good guy or a bad guy. This aspect of the game imo lets you create vastly different characters that you alone judge.

I played FO3 as myself first time, then looked at my achievements and saw that there was a few left that reqired getting a high evil score. So I rolled again, but as an evil guy and got halfway and said, Hang on, this isn't evil. I'm only doing this stuff to get what feels like an arbitrary score up. In Skyrim I've played a Deadra worshipping Dunmer refugee and I'm like, Jeez! This guy is a total badass. I've also played an Altmer mage and butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. It's all about being given the tools to be creative.

Definitely my #1 game of all time.
