Almost 5 months later... what do you think of Skyrim?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:03 am

Why the hell would anyone think that after Oblivion? I expected another Oblivion, and what I got was another Oblivion that's prettier and has more enjoyable combat, so perhaps my extremely low expectations have allowed me to enjoy the game...? Also, while I get where you're coming from it's hard to take you seriously when every post is chock full of so much hyperbole.

For context, I played TES: Arena the day it was released.
Did not play oblivion myself so i did not know what i was getting.I was assuming i was going to get a RPG that required some thinking not Call Of Duty fantasy world style, and what exactly have i exaggerated about?

Since I haven't played the other Elder Scrolls games, I guess, I was expecting a game like Fallout 3 but in a fantasy setting (swords, magic, dragons, etc.) and that's what I got... and I couldn't be happier with it.

It is what it is. If it's not what you wanted then it's not what you wanted. If I told you that Mario Kart was a serious racing sim you'd probably be disappointed, but that doesn't make Mario Kart a bad game.

Only everything.

Right there, where you say it's "Call Of Duty fantasy world style." That right there is a pretty gigantic exaggeration.

It's brilliant. As it has always been in TES the newest one is far better than previous one - and Skyrim isn't an exception. I still play it a lot and I has played with several characters. Some for longer and some only for a small while. Even the game is still interesting I'm waiting to see what kind of expansion they are going to make for it.

Well now that it's been some time I think it's overrated, overhyped, unbalanced, unrewarding, badly written, badly design, tedious, repetitive, annoying oh and not my cup of tea.

You say that about almost everything Bethesda makes.

OT: Great, but Morrowind and Daggerfall are better.

What i was trying to get at was Skyrim requires about as much thought as Call Of Duty, call it a exaggeration if you want i stick by it.

Maybe because some people like the other elder scrolls games and are disappointed with this one.

Fix'd that for ya...

I've played every Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall, and played the hell out of them. I like Skyrim just fine.

Yes, it's got its differences from the other games, but then again no Elder Scrolls is the same as the one before it. Skyrim is a great game, and is continuing the trend of evolving the series. Each game has been better than the last IMHO, and Skyrim is easily just as good as Oblivion before it, and Morrowind before that.

Games evolve, just like everything else, and Skyrim is a great evolution of the series.

Then I'd wager that you've not played one of or either of those games. Either that or I missed a lot of features in Call of Duty. Sorry, I just have a hard time taking opinions that are so devoid of objectivity seriously. That's the point at which one crosses over from a critique to hipster anti-zealotry. No point in arguing about it.

Definitely one of my favorite games, but I prefer the Fallout series. That aside Skyrim is definitely one of my top 15 best games of all time.

Skyrim svcks... just kidding after 400 hours of fun and games

Ha ha  Liar! Liar! Pants on fire! Oh magnificent lover and supporter of Skyrim Screenshot threads :obliviongate:

Some more things i really love about Skyrim is how busy the architecture is in cities. It feels like am in an actual city with all the buildings, streets and alleyways not to mention graveyards with tombs! Talk about a Daggerfall flashback when i actually saw a nice sized cementery in a crowded city with actual haunted tombs.

Populations in cities and outside are also handled brilliantly well. In TES IV Oblivion seeing a traveler on the road always felt so surprising and kind of out of place because it was rare. I guess in a way its not out of place but then again in Skyrim everything feels very balanced with more travelers near cities and almost none in the deep forsaken isolated wilderness areas where the most welcoming site is a shrine to a god or godess.

Am real happy about the Dragons as well. They came out perfect in looks and behaviour. Truly before me stands a great Wyrm :ahhh:

So not 5 months... 11/11/11 to 3/11/12 would only be 4 months and we're not even there yet. So where do you come up with 5?

Anyway, it's keeping my interest up until one of two games on my radar come out... Borderlands 2 and Diablo 3. If it doesn't make it, I can go back and play something else, but it's going a pretty good job of keeping me interested. It's not the best game in the history of gaming... probably not even in my top 10. But it's a fine game and well worth the money and time invested.

I'm not going to argue with you if all you're going to do is keep re-stating your opinion without supporting it. The only thing that Skyrim and Call of Duty have in common is that they're first-person games with action-oriented combat. Of course it requires you to think. Picking your nose requires you to think.

I will admit that Call of Duty has a better magic system, a better skill advancement system, a better journal, better inventory system, better crafting system, better enchantment system, a bigger open world with more places to discover, and more quests than Skyrim does.

Like someone previously said.. it WAS a missed dunk that was set up to make Skyrim one of the best games of all time. Now we have to wait until fall sometime for DLC that may or may not be anything that is significant?? Give me a break.. this game lasts as long as any other and even though the world is pretty and shiny, the 'hours of game play and quests' really isn't as meaty as it could have been. I feel like a mindless drone playing only 4 available class types (warrior, thief, archer, mage) and everything just gets played over and over.

If you think about it the MQ is supposed to keep us satisfied for 4-5 years until the next release. 5 months later and it is painfully boring and dull. Not to mention dragons have essentially become flying pests that are easily killed now that their tactics are burned into our minds. Sadly, aforementioned, I don't believe the DLC will improve anything major to keep the game engrossing.

I thought the game was pretty much Grand Theft Auto in a medieval fantasy setting with some rpg elements thrown in. The main storyline is what matters most to me and I found Skyrim's to be terrible. Everything felt extremely generic and there was really no personal/emotional tone to the game at all. Actually, when it comes to storylines, GTA IV, and even Call of Duty has Skyrim beat (And I hate Call of Duty Games.)

My second biggest gripe about the game is complete disregard for people rp'ing as completely "good" characters. Skyrim has these moments in the game that I have heard cleverly described as moral traps. By traps, I mean that sometimes you are forced to do things that the character you are role playing would never do (daedric quests, for example.) I had the same problem with this in Oblivion and other than the garbage storyline, it was a very large reason for me never finishing the game. I think that at least, bethesda should have included opt-outs during these questlines instead of either being forced to finish the quest or just ignoring it all together.

Another big problem with recent bethesda games is the extremely generic NPC's. Every NPC in this game just says the same stupid crap over and over and over (other than quest dialogues) again and it really breaks the immersion. Followers have no back story, or very little, no feelings of their own, and pretty much just stand around with a blank stare on their face unless they are killing something. If you have ever played Dragon Age: Origins you know what I am talking about.

Lastly, very little actually changes in the world and there are a lot of open cliff hangers that I guess they just figured if anyone is dumb enough to like the game at this point they would be dumb enough to buy the DLC that adds the stuff that should have been there in the first place. -Just my opinion =)

The game has so much wrong with it its not funny as i stated in a previous post.'The game is shallow it has no branching narrative which makes questing extremely linear. There is little to no decision making or consequences the world does not notice what you have accomplished or treat you based on what you have done. The NPC's are the most wooden shambolic NPC's I have seen in a long time, picking a race does not mean diddly squat in the long term face it it's as shallow as it gets".This is what is wrong with the game the whole open world aspect of the game is let down by everything that is wrong.Everything in this game is painfully easy it is like it was aimed at the toddler market.Playing Skyrim requires about as much thought as it does to play Call of duty that is bad for a RPG.Mind you it seems the norm now days to strip back RPG's to the bare minimum.

After two playthroughs, I'm pretty much done with it.

It was a great deal of fun for about a month, but now I'm onto other things like FF XIII-2, and Mass Effect 3 is coming out next Tuesday, with RE Racoon city close behind that, so that should keep me busy until the next Bioshock comes out in August.

I'll play Skyrim now and then I think, but the hardcoe long sessions are gone for me.
