Another Major Problem

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:28 am

My mom's computer is now infested with viruses(might be only one). I just woke up and was told by my mom that something popped up telling her her computer was infected with a "smart virus"(that's what I think she claimed it is called). She's blaming me, claiming my Civilization III disk is infected or that I got her computer infected by going on the internet and my brothers are blaming these forums(they seem to believe whatever the babysitter says. Also, my brother puked in my shoe(just a bonus). This whole mess has ruined any chance of using a computer in my house again(my mom means it this time) and once the babysitter finds out, it will ruin my chance of getting on these forums again. I was supposed to get Morrowind today. The only websites I went on this time were these forums, Wikipedia, Youtube, and a couple websites about the best countries to live in, which I accessed through links on these forums. The only things I installed on the computer were Civilization III and three Fallout games(1,2, and tactics). I should have stayed away from the computer like I originally planned to after the last time I got blamed for something like this. I was supposed to get Morrowind for the PC today, but nothing ever goes as I planned. It seems the universe does not want me to be able to use a computer. Any ideas about the cause of this?

buy your own computer

never go near hers

let her deal with it, I'd suggest solutions but she obviously isn't going to learn if this is her reaction... once again

Dude, you parents are ridiculously harsh. I'm sorry, I'm not flaming or anything but it's just the truth. Tell them to go to a professional computer repair place and they will set your parents straight about everything. Better yet, just get Avast! and do a boot scan. That should fix the virus crap. Maybe run CCleaner as well.

I'm only aware of one time a game has shipped with a virus on it and that was at least a decade ago.

It's possible to maliciously edit a wikipedia page to try attach a virus but that's unlikely.

Bad suggestion... Better to fix it yourself, Unless he like having to spend a few hundred dollars to fix a simple malware infestation and most likely will add another hundred to install antivirus/malware software :P

Hmm... Babysitters now double as IT specialists? No wonder my sister can't afford one for my niece... :hehe:

In all seriousness, is your mom one to click on anything that pops up on the web? Do you guys have any virus/malware protection running?

I just walked downstairs after typing my first post in this thread, and I noticed that the computer I used to use(my mom's work laptop) is in my house after being gone for a month for repairs. It looks like I was going to be surprised with it(I would have a separate computer for use) today. Had it not been for that virus popping up today, I would have received Morrowind for the PC and a laptop for myself today. The timing of this whole thing doesn't feel real.

if you can't dig that thing out of the computer.. which you oughta be able to.. you can try to completely reformat the hard drive. she probably won't like that, but it works..

fine

Tell your mom not to click stupid internet pop ups and if theres ever any doubt to call you

I'm betting she clicked a "OH NOES VIRUS ALERT" popup and infected her system

go download malwarebytes or spybot search and destroy, run that, tell us the results

And look at the prices for "PC Tune up" $49.99... Easy job. Just run a defragger and CCleaner.

My mom would click on a pop-up and she didn't want to buy virus protection, so she only downloaded the free version of Avira.

Tell your parents how those viruses couldn't have been you. Use long tech sort of words they won't understand so you look legit.

ahahahahaha.....yeah at Futureshop they charge you $50 so they can install your RAM. I mean, you just stick it in the slot, but most people are oblivious. I need to get into that business.

Either:
Get a new computer and use that

Or:
Install another harddrive, install the OS of your choice and duel boot.

Seriously though dude, go download free programs like Malwarebytes and Avast and then clean her computer with them. She may think you infected it, but you CAN fix it for her.

I cant say much here after falling for the cyber security thing, I just used spybot, avg and reset the laptop to a date before I downloaded the damn thing.

Get AVG. Look at Defrons thread very helpful.

It totally blows my mind how much your family svcks. No, seriously, it's [censored] ridiculous. It's a shame you can't give yourself up for [censored] adoption.

Assuming your mom hasn't already chained you up in the dungeon you haven't told us about yet, ask her if the virus alert was a pop-up in internet explorer or it was actually from your computer. Because there are pop-ups that tell you you have a virus and that you have to download an anti-virus software, and it tricks people into downloading an actual virus.

I suspected that, but my mom said it popped up when she wasn't on the internet.

Go take a look at the internet history tab and confront your parents with all the dubious websites YOU didn't visit.

Then, if they let you, install Avast or whatever might be your preference, clean up the computer and claim your role as IT-specialist of the house.

It won't matter. My mom is convinced that I did something wrong.

I'll try that.
