Anyone else find it difficult to play as the opposite gender

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:11 am

Because (1) I am just a lisbian trapped in a man's body and (2) I'm a pervy old man.

I still feel some connection to the char. Also, I tried that in ME and it's like watching my sister kiss some greasy punk at the picture show.
LOL Okay. When I roleplay a male character in a romance situation, I identify with the woman he's wooing rather than my PC. But the plethora of yaoi means there are women who take your sort of approach. I find it mystifying but whatever, to each his/ her own.

All through middle and high school, I would play as female characters, but never get very far for some reason. After switching to exclusively male characters in my senior year of high school, I starting getting further into games before restarting. I think it's because I can get into the skin of my character more easily if it's a man and not a woman. I tried playing a woman again in Skyrim--my first character was a Breton named Enobaria--but I got bored of her around level 12. I made a male character--this time a Nord--and have gotten him to level 27, completed the Companions main quest and won the civil war.

My Nord male is pretty good (I'm presently working on getting everything at 100).

And I'm a guy. (Because I'm trying to a charater that ressembles the most to me)

I'm female and I play characters of both genders and all sixual orientations. My characters all have their own goals, motications and conflicts. Their morals do not reflect my own. I have great fun developing the backstories of my characters and playing out their lives. For instance:

My GW1 main is a woman in her mid-late thirties, a former pirate turned mercenary, a mindbreaking illusionist and lisbian. She's destined to return to piracy only to go down with her ship and most of her crew. By the time of GW2, she won't be 'playable', because she'll be an undead zombie captain and servant to the dragon lord Zhaitan.

My Skyrim main is a Breton conjurer and expert swordsman. He's bisixual, but has yet to settle down. He's a thief, a Daedra worshipper and feels utterly content swearing his soul over to Nocturnal. I'm not sure how his story ends.

Oddly enough I feel extremely uncomfortable trying to play characters who resemble myself in any form. I'm not a 'wish fulfillment' type of gal. -shrugs-

I seen alot of nice faces with that race. So good job on that part. Also why are you surpirsed? Nexus Images is almost a fetish shop of sorts. If your releasing to the public you have to expect this type of thing.

I'm not surprised (not anymore LOL). Keep in mind that I'm talking about something I made years ago.. I'm talking like 2007/2008. I don't even remember when anymore. I was just illustrating why a person might find what another person does to their game disturbing, and like I said, since I expect that kind of thing and I know that it bothers me, I just don't release a lot of things anymore. Usually anything I release new these days tends to be resources for other modders for the purpose of them doing whatever with it.

Feeling more comfortable roleplaying your own gender doesn't have to equate to "wish fulfillment." It's just the kind of story you like.

I'm not talking about gender, specifically, but characters who resemble me and act in ways that I would, were I placed into their situation.

If you want some insight into role playing a women, then the best adice i have to offer would be to read some fanatasy books by female authors. Anne McCaffery, Kristin Britian, Ivonna Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Mercedes Lakey. I definately would recomend Mercedes Lakey's 500 Kingdoms, as those focus less on fanatasy aspects and more on the people.

Anothor Author to consider would be David and Leigh Eddings, a husband/wife team.

Honestly I have a hard time playing as the same six. I can only play female characters. I try to make a male cause I think they look really cool in huge heavy armor with the shoulders really massive. But I like to look at my Nord battlemages beautiful face I made on the Xbox

I'm female but prefer to play male characters. Mostly it's because I find it easier to roleplay something different from my real self, but in a lot of games I'm irritated by how scrawny or busty female characters are in a lot of games, or by the pitch of the voices.
Of course, since I like fellas in real life, my male characters usually end up gay...

Do not read Anne McCaffrey. This was a woman who believed that if a man were to be sixually assaulted by another man, he would magically turn gay. She's of another era, to say it kindly.

perhaps, but her books do give insiights on female points of view. I'm not one to toss out a good book because an author has strange or antiquated idea's, nor a good movie because the main actor thinks Zetan's are real.

I have a problem making myself adapt to a female character... Probably because I mostly feel that the dialogue options are written for men (and at least, BY men). Then again, I've seen female players feeling that dialogue options for games are more "woman-like". KOTORs come to mind. The picture I've fotten is that men often seem to feel that the PC is a male, women that she's a female.

Maybe it's just because I am a man, I can't possibly know what it would be like to be a woman. So, I kind of feel uneasy roleplaying them as well. I bet it might also affect if one is straight or not... Or if someone wants eye-candy or not.

In games where you create a character, I almost always choose male. There are some times I create a female character, for roles I normally associate with them... because most of my characters are really just extensions of the same 6 or 7 I have carried across my time in gaming. In games where you cannot create the character, but just autorun the role... well there is no choice within and comparisons don't carry much weight.

Nothing exclusively wrong with one six playing another, well if you're ogling your character's physical attributes... a little social interaction may be called for, but consider the words of my 3 year old nephew :

"Why you playing a girl?"

Because, thats why.

Even children associate something strange with it, its a commentary on our culture. Truth be told, its a statement about manhood... I think it would be safe to assume most people don't see a problem with females playing male roles.

I don't think the books are particularly well written either. The editing and continuity is particularly painful.

No problem what so ever. This thread pops up on an average of one every two weeks it seems, as stated earlier.

I am a straight male and roll female characters about 90% of the time, if not more. I look at more from a 3rd party, I guess. Like playing Tomb Raider or something. When I create male chars, I run them like they are an extension of myself. Especially the Sniper characters I create in the FO series.

I put myself in the shoes of the male chars. I put myself in the head of the female chars.

I LOVE women. I like being around women more than males. (lots of women, actually) I like to watch movies that star female actresses, more than male actors. I like to listen to female singing artists WAY more than male singers. I like to create and play with female chars more in RPG's than males...and yes, they are all lisbian.

 on! Ps always men with :fallout: but femme (sometimes male, but not often) with :tes:

Well, if nothing else, this topic illustrates that our play styles are as unique as each individual. Even if you group people according to "plays same-gender characters" versus "plays opposite-gender characters," you still get all kinds of different thoughts and reasoning about why and how and what works. :foodndrink:

Is it so hard? I don't think men and women are that different. Basic humanity is pretty basic. Seems like people are overthinking this.

I'm a guy and find it real hard to get in a mindset where i am playing a lass. I feel like a prat! I should also note that I find it pretty wierd that there appears to be so many people who are so concerned with playing "sixy" characters. Rp is RP, but surely that type of motivation is best spent in more ..productive pursuits?

When you get my age, you will pursue any avenue. So yes, they are very sixy. When I get my rig built and a few mods installed, they are going to get a whole lot sixier.

Quite.

I shudder at things like "female roles". To me, that is just as bad as "I like to look at my character's butt".

Pray tell, what is a "female" role?
