Anyone else find it difficult to play as the opposite gender

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:36 am

Another common comment is that people who see the character as being "them" tend to play the same gender. People who just see the character as some movie/book/etc character that they're pushing around, don't always.
I think this is true for a lot of people. I do try to think like my character and make decisions that they would make, but I never pretend that it's me. I treat them essentially the same way I treat the characters in my stories. My stories also typically have strong female characters, though it's a much more even split between male and female.

To address the OT comments: I can do combat in first or third. A lot of the time, I don't even notice which mode I'm in as I switch back and forth between them all the time. I don't find one harder or easier than the other with the exception of archery which I almost always switch into first person for. If I'm using a sword+board I often switch into 3rd person just because I like the way it looks.

OMG some one remembers Draken

we are so old :spotted owl:
I bet I'm a lot older than you.

The very first time I played Skyrim I thought: this is just like Drakan, only I don't get to fly a dragon. :(

btw its a game for 18+ so you can pretty much play as a drug addicted argonian male prosttute that changes his/her gender every month and turns into a werewolf-vampire and jumps of cliffs naked while shouting FUS ROH DAH

play the game as you wish and try not to freak out too much about playing as girl, its childish and indicates a lot of mental issues

I find that's offset by much better peripheral vision. They play a little different, but I don't find one mode better than the other. Archery is the only thing I find easier in 1st.

I don't play females in TES games, but I sometimes do in others. It depends on the level of immersion. In these games, I play in first person and more or less identify with my character as an avatar of myself to some degree. In a strictly third person game or a shooter, I'll use female avatars, but they aren't a character you identify with on any level, they are just ... and I hate this term but it applies ... toons. Since it's only an avatar, it may as well double as eye candy.

I remember once playing "Dead Or Alive: Xtreme 2" and realising to my horror that my swimsuit and nail polish actually clashed.

But when it comes to Elder Scrolls games the decisions usually end up being more of a practical and less of an aesthetic nature.

I guess all the people that can't play using female characters never got into the Tomb Raider games. I don't see the TESS characters as myself just as I never pictured myself as Laura Croft.

For me its a problem, whenever i try to play a female character i just end up feeling like an idiot, so i was wondering, am i the only one who feels like this?
I don't have this problem; I create characters that are men or women according to my mood at the time I create them. Right now I'm playing a man. No problem. What would be interesting to know is "why do you feel stupid at playing a woman?".

If I'm gonna be staring at a pixellated ass for hours upon end, it might as well be a female ass
Same logic my brother used when he created his character for Mass Effect. Seems reasonable to me.

As you wish: Men who find the female form attractive? The horror! :cold:

That's a big part of it for me too. Personally i'm fed up with the "damsel in distress" cliche, so my characters are women who kick ass and look good doing it
There is a difference between finding it attractive, and trying to make the outfit on a female character in a video game look as skimpy as possible...

Draken was like Skyrim in it's day, Rynn in the PS2 game was pretty nice and I model my heroines after her.

This.

And to all those that "can't play a female", can you play a cat or lizard without problem? Why? How can you justify not feeling funny with absolutely no basis for how to act?

I have zero interest in playing male characters, whenever I've tried in the past, like giving Gothic a try years back, the gaming experience always feels 'off' to me. The notion of playing a male character primarily to be able to stare at a male body while I play is also a foreign concept to me. I just don't get that at all! But then, I never could understand why my guy friends would try to play female characters for a table top roleplay session and usually ended up turning them into big-boobed slores.

You're probably not the only one that feels like that, but I have no problem with either male or female characters.

Anyone else find it difficult to play as the opposite gender?

I wonder if you also find it difficult to play as a Lizard, or a Cat, or a Murderer?

No problem what so ever. This thread pops up on an average of one every two weeks it seems, as stated earlier.

I am a straight male and roll female characters about 90% of the time, if not more. I look at more from a 3rd party, I guess. Like playing Tomb Raider or something. When I create male chars, I run them like they are an extension of myself. Especially the Sniper characters I create in the FO series.

I put myself in the shoes of the male chars. I put myself in the head of the female chars.

I LOVE women. I like being around women more than males. (lots of women, actually) I like to watch movies that star female actresses, more than male actors. I like to listen to female singing artists WAY more than male singers. I like to create and play with female chars more in RPG's than males...and yes, they are all lisbian.

Not difficult, but also not my first choice. I prefer to play a female when the option is there. My first four characters have been female, but I'm planning to play a hot, burly Nord next. :liplick:

Yes very. The only time I roll a female character is because there is no male equivalent of that class, such as the diablo 1 and 2.

I asked that on the previous page, I doubt we will get an answer. ;)

Add me to the no column. I play both genders, but tend to play females a bit more. I guess I'm one of those that sees themselves controlling the character, rather than becoming them.

Curious why you prefer to play female characters who aren't attracted to men.

Since I tend to play as my alter ego (basically me but in another world) I never play as the opposite six.

Because (1) I am just a lisbian trapped in a man's body and (2) I'm a pervy old man.

I still feel some connection to the char. Also, I tried that in ME and it's like watching my sister kiss some greasy punk at the picture show.
