Anyone else wish they could change their character's looks?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:42 pm

Skyrim (like all TES before it) allows you to play the same characters for an unlimited amount of time. Unlike other games the game doesnt end when the story ends. For those who do even the tiniest bit of RPG this means your character changes over the many hours that you play. From barbarian to Imperial Legionair or from hunter to thief. At some point the chosen looks for your character just doesn't fit who he/she is anymore.

In my case my legion deserting Orc shouldn't look so clean anymore. I would like to change his hair, add a beard, some dirt and maybe even a scar and a tattoo.

I don't understand why Bethesda didn't add barber and tattooshops to the game. They already have the features build in the game, seems to me like an easy way to add some more diversity to cities. Not everyone has to use it, but for those who like it, it would be nice to have it. Even DA2 has an option to change your looks ingame, and it helped me make the game somewhat enjoyable (as a Hawke that visibily ages during his time in Kirkwall).

Anyone else who would like to give their characters's looks a make over (hairstyle/tattoo/scars/dirt/etc)?

P.S. I am aware PC gamers have an ''out of game'' option to do so, but most gamers play on other platforms.

This argument has been posted in Bioware Forum as well regarding Dragon age series. It just doesn't seem to be appropriate for a fantasy genre to include cosmetic surgery. You should just try and get it right the first time.

Who is talking about cosmetic surgery? I would be happy with just a barbershop, and if possible a tattooshop. Afterall, who said that tattoos have to be permanent? There could be an alchemy component or a magical atribute that released the inkt from the body so that you can remove a tatoo and add a new one.

From a roleplaying point of view this is very important for me. I even have enough fantasy of my own to pretent that I lost an eye and got a scar during an important event. This is how I did things in Dragon Age 2 as well. I had to go to the magical mirror that changed your looks, but I pretended that it happened during combat.

You don't have to use it, but this sort of stuff greatly increased my game enjoyment, and I can't be alone in this, can I?

And if Bethesda is fearful of the backslash from those that won't use it but also don't have enough heart to allow others to use it, then can we at the very least get a barbershop? Or is it also in appropriate to change your hair in a fantasy game?

Tattoos are permanent without laser surgery removal. And there is no tatoos in the game just war paints. If you want a hair cut, you should ask your maid or wife to cut your hair. This is how it was done in the old days.

I'm sorry, but there is no 'getting it right'. I roleplay and my character changes as the game progresses. This is also the only reason why I like Fable (or at least what Fable 'could have been'). A look that was fitting for when I started out, might not work for later in the game. Did you not readthe bit about my Orc Legionair?

Ok, I would settle for that. If that is the consensus that needs to be reached than I am ok with that.

So who would like for Bethesda to add the option to have your maid/wife change your haircut? And perhaps allow you to look in a mirror and add new warpaint.

Of course adding scars would also be awesome, but if there are too many people who don't want others to have fun than we can leave that out ;)

Only reason. So don't play Skyrim. Why are you playing it? Do you want to age and see that your hair grows as well/ Do you also need to go and take a piss and turd too now and then in the game? I would rather leave somethings out, if not necessary.

Do you read my posts, or just glance at them? I said it was the only reason why I liked Fable. The option to really change your character to the changing circumstances.

I like Skyrim for a lot of things, but being able to change appearance would make me like it even more. Having the barber droid in Fallout 3 was also very important to my game enjoyment.

I dont constantly roleplay so no I wouldn't want the things you mention, but I wouldnt object to them either if Bethesda decided to add them. I just go through stages in my character's story. At some point I feel my character's looks no longer reflect who he is. For example my Orc Warrior who is a compansion but looks like a legionair with his short hair and clean face. I would love to change hsi hairstyle and add war paint. A scar would also be cool, but I'd settle for the first two if need be.

I would like slightly more, but a mirrow that allows you to change your haircut and warpaint would be enough for me as well.

Since the function is already in the game, it should be an easy thing to add to the first DLC pack. Just a mirror hanging on the wall of some tavern for example.

I totally agree. I thought Bethesda would add that option to Skyrim before it was released, but I was disappointed too. Seeing that I play mostly 1st person in Skyrim, this wasn't a very big concern.

Edit: I was also disappointed to see that Beth didn't make npc's to react to how you look. I mean - if I had many scars and I was wearing heavy armor and wielding a two-handed weapon people would fear me, things like that.

I would be for an option to be able to change your looks, or how you play effects your looks, and that effect how you interact with people. I know people around here hate fable, i do too, but the problem with Fable was always the execution was bad, but the ideas are still good. I think it would add a lot of the game, if i was scarred up from years of combat, or if i wore Dedric armor and a dragon priest mask, so people in town would shy away from me. But if i wore regular clothes it was easier to interact with people.

They could just allow us to change our faces one more time before leaving the "tutorial dungeon", like what they did in oblivion. I really liked that.

changeable haircut and warpaints would be nice.

Tbh i wouldnt mind a complete face change either in the first 20 hours of game play. Often cool faces reveal to be annoying after a while or having a small annoying detail, which is not immediately seen at character creation. Character creation is like 5 min only.

This is how I feel about it as well. Molyneux had some interesting ideas before he released the first Fable. He didn't accomplish most of them, and unfortunatly with Fable 2 he didnt use the opportunity to make up for it. And than Fable III happened and I gave up all hope ;)

But TES is a game that actually allows you to play for such a long time that the features Fable wanted to have would enrich the experience. Of course I know not everyone would want to see scars appear on their character, or have their hair grow as they've played for another hour. I'm not even sure I would want this for all my characters.

However if they just gave us the option to manually add it, than us roleplayers could create our own fun. Isn't that what Elder Scrolls is about?

Already can on PC, but yeah I do think they should've included the option for console users. I don't think it'd really impact immersion if it were an out-of-game option instead of some NPC with some special capability like a master alteration mage which'd seem kind of tacky.

I agree. And yes I play on PC.

I use the showracemenu command quite often. Made worse by the fact that there's a continuous flow of mods that improve stuff to spice up your character. For me it soft of breaks immersion to have go outside the flow of the game to do basic stuff like change haircuts, change war paint, add dirt, etc.

And yes: there should have been a character confirmation point (allowing editing if you so wish) upon exiting the tutorial dungeon as well.

Sometimes the bloody handprint on my Breton girl's face looks out of place with what she's doing. There was this mission where I had to go incognito but you could totally tell it was still her cuz of her warpaint. It would be nice to be able to change those minor details, not the whole shape of the face or anything though.

This is how it is for me as well, at some points the look of the character conflicts with the roleplaying. However some people might get annoyed with certain part of the facial features and would like to chain the chin (for example).

I wouldn't mind an option to do a total make-over either, and I also wouldnt mind an ingame barbershop. As long as Bethesda does something about this, whatever they feel will best please the fanbase or fit in with TES. Anything is better than nothing, and it seems most people agree on that.

Not everyone needs it, this is true. But if it was part of DLC than it wouldn't hurt your playstyle, correct? It would just be a small addition that you can ignore. So to me it really seems like something Bethesda can easily add. Because:

1. The functionality is already in the game.

2. Those who like the to change their looks could really improve their game enjoyment with it.

3. Those who don't want to change their looks won't suffer any negative impacts on their game.*

*unlike most issues discussed on here that some feel would decrease their game enjoyment while others feel it is a must-have. Issues like fasttraveling, atributes, hit&miss chance system, etc.

maybe not cosmetic surgery but perhaps a barber shop or tattoo parler would be nice. I was severely dissapointed in the no tattoos in this game. But we get apparently impossible to wash or smudge face paint. Makes no sense. At least add tattoos but make them permanent and non removable but face paint can be removed and is enchanted to add certain effects.
