Are you disappointed in the World Map?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:29 am

Could you be thinking of a certain body of water where a square of water disappears/beccomes transparent when looked at from a certain angle?

No, any square of the map I am standing on (in the worldspace) becomes a tile of water when I hover my pointer over my location.
It hasnt happened on all my characters, only on the ones Ive been playing with the longest.

That's one way of looking at it ... the other would be I'm showing my age again. Before computers helped us out so much, back when I started computer gaming, you had to draw your own maps if you wanted them (also your own journal). I guess I'm guilty of thinking like that when I talked about my char drawing her own map, what sort of map would I make, and it wouldn't be anything like the ones supplied by Bethesda.

But I like your answer better ... roleplaying a cartographer!

Text based, such as Zork (You can't go in there, you might get eaten by a grue) and gamebooks (the Fighting Fantasy series, for example). Where RPGs began, lol. I love gamebooks, and I keep trying to play zork, but I end up mucking up the map because I forget that when you go north into an are, you're facing north, when you go south you're facing south; so you won't see the same description as what you would see if you entered from a different direction.

I would quite like an Oblivion in game style map, with the level of detail of the Morrowind paper map:

Detailed enough to navigate by, yet still looks more like an actual map than a satellite image

It is far superior to a boring, static drawn map.

I have no problems using it. The only thing I would modify would be to slightly increase the depth one can zoom in. However, currently I can make out individual buildings in cities and see many paths and roads.

Roads aren't highlighted in red? Then *gasp!* explore, remember or fast travel.

Not all who wander are lost.

Nope.
Yes the clouds block the map at times.
Go explore and find it.
Maps are for those who are lost.

All this talk how 3D map gives more exploration then a static is ridiculous for several reasons

1. Now imagine if Skyrim didn't have the 3D map just a paper one and you looked at the map and looked where High Hrothgar was and the map indicated (or better yet 2nd reason) a mountain with triangles. When you visit it the first time or see from Whiterun you are surprised at the scale of said mountain.

2. A paper map can have a fog of war system just like the current local map does (not main map which as clouds as clouds), if you haven't gone there you cannot see anything but main roads should always be shown that connect to hold to hold to at least to give anyone some kind of direction to head for. This adds two things; a reason to explore so you can and scout area and mark it on your map and two If your on a quest and need to head to a certain city your not completely lost.

3. If BGS stuck with a paper map or static map and not go with the current one maybe they could have added better features to it such as marking icons on it instead of just one go to mark make it so you can possibly make notes, or just have a series of icons for anyone to use to mark something. A few thing I would mark that would be a cave or building outside of the holds that has a enchanter, alchemy, Ore viens, Dragon/dragon shout, vampires, claw doors, danger zones in general, Deer/wolf/bear/lion dens, and last but not least side quests I have not accepted.

Well, since i didn't expect anything, I can hardly be dissapointed. What I found though, was a quite pleasing implementation of a 3D map, which suits my needs just fine.

Much prefer this map. With the all the mountains it really helps, also gives me a good scale of the place. One complaint I can understand is not being able to see the roads, although I don't look at the map when traveling too much, just to see where things are so I can plan out which routes I take.

Maybe I'd like the map better if I just used it as a menu for fast traveling. Of course, that means I'd have to start fast traveling, but there must be some attraction to reducing the world to a series of rooms in a hallway, maybe one I'll discover if I use FT.

I'd be perfectly fine with it if it had the option to toggle roads on and off. Until we get some sort of way to be able to see the roads, it's mostly useless other than a general guide of location.

I like the map.

I would improve it by allowing for a greater zoom level and make the map pins more sensitive to the location you're trying to pin. At the moment if you have any location near where you wish to pin you cannot do it because the map lacks the resolution sensitivity and highlights the other location. I would also improve the sensitivity of rotation and pan control for the mouse.

I like it and I don't won't to go back to the Oblivion style of map.

For people saying paper maps make it too easy to find anything, they could do it like Baldurs Gate.

They could have a blank map and pictures of the places/wilderness and get drawn in7

the map would be about ten times better if the clouds were removed, they only serve to obscure your view.

I do like that you can discern height variations/relief on the map, so you can tell if a landmark is on a peak or in a valley, but I don't like that you have to jog the camera about awkwardly in order to see that height variation in a particular area of interest. This is exacerbated by the cloud problem of course.

I don't like how the map screen appears to have arbitrarily changing rules about how much camera orientation and position adjustments are allowed at what positions on the map, and how the upper portions of the map are just impossible to look at from straight above. It would be much better if the camera was always forced to point straight downward; the perspective and other visual effects are just taken so far to an extreme that they are more trouble than they are worth.

I don't like how the cursor has to travel until nearly the edge of the screen before the map will scroll.

The Map is great and I love the fact that the roads aren't on it, makes looking at the signposts more important.

It looks great and allows you to quickly find the places you wish to go to. The problem is getting there if you don't want to or can't fast travel. Path finding is impossible on that map.

I'd like the ability to TOGGLE between the "sky map" and a classic paper map that actually shows the roads and major trails.

Also right now I have 1,000 freaking icons cluttering my map, so I'd like a way to FILTER them... Like this for example:

SHOW:
(_) All
(X) All open quest locations
(_) Current quest location only
(_) Cleared quest locations
(X) Cities
(X) Towns
(_) Homesteads
(X) Forts
(_) Mines
(_) Caves
(_) Camps
(_) Landmarks
(_) Ancient Nord ruins
(_) Dwemer ruins
(X) Dragon lairs
(_) Forsworn camps
(_) Giant camps
(X) Khajiit merchant camps (last known location)

ETC.......

Hear, Hear! or There, There! or, oh, what the hey, just Do It!

It's not really a map. More a 3d tabletop model that the adventurer keeps in his/her pocket. Much more practical

I like that it has elevation and some detail, but finding roads is rather inconvenient. I find that I have to remember where the roads are, because the map is inadequate.
