Are you disappointed in the World Map?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 5:11 pm

I hate to sound like one of those jerks who complain about everything, but I find that the world map isn't exactly funtionable. It looks cool, but the roads aren't exactly visible. I think it'd be neat if Bethesda added a feature that allowed you to taggle a highligth on the roads or something along those lines. Any thoughts?

Yes, since it's almost entirely worthless.

This is a problem with them including cloud cover, for the most part. I know there's a mod available for the PC that clears up the map so you can see the roads easier, but I think the map needs to be fixed so console users can also use it easier.

yea i agree with you sure the clouds and all the eye candy on the map is great but i find myself finding things x10 times more easily in oblivion than in skyrim, the roads and clear details of the world are just too difficult to see.

Do you mean the way Oblivion's map was presented?

No, I like the Google Earth look that it has, but I just wish it actually worked a lot better.

The coulds are for the most part unexplored areas, fog of war so to speak. While it svcks that the whole map is covered in it (you should think that hte main roads would be known to you..) it is an interesting feature. I like it.

It helps spot mountain passes and stuff, but I really wish I could see the roads.

I think the map comes from the Apple school of design. Looks over function. It doesn't zoom in enough and then it plays with you by suggesting you can rotate it but then stops you after a millimetre or so. If it does decide to be useful for a second, a cloud then covers what you were looking at.

Now I use the map as a general guide to where I am and rely mostly on getting to know landmarks to navigate around.

I agree with you, but only on some parts.

To me the map does a really good job, and it's infinitely better than the regular 2-D map from past Elder Scrolls. At least now you can zoom in, somewhat.
I do however believe that they should have added some sort of options to make main roads much more visible (highlighted on colors, maybe chosen by the player?) among other small additions.

When trying to get the Treasure Chests from the 2d maps they usually have 'roads' for you to follow. However most of the time it's really hard to follow or even find said road.

Could of been improved greaterly with a legend, road/hold overlay and a toggle from cloth to rw versions.

It's all over my map, I can't see Whiterun, and the surrounding area, too clearly and I "live" at Breezehome so I spend most of my time there.

Such a feature might add to the protests about "dumbing the game down".

A better zoom feature, as http://www.gamesas.com/user/39207-farlington/ touched on, could help a bit.

Thoroughly yes. I love how it reflects in-game time but I want to see roads, not fog obscuring everything. Or at least, remove the fog when I explored. But then again, defeats the purpose of a map.

I love it shows elevation though, they can keep that!

The map looks great, but i agree that a more practical map with roads would be better.

The cloud doesn't clear much even when I ecplore areas and the map lags horribly on PC.

One thing I really miss about the newer maps - both oblivion and now skyrim - you can't tell where you've been and where you haven't been. In morrowind, you could always tell if you missed a spot as it showed you the territory you'd covered and the territory you had not covered. The unfortunate drawback to that was that once you had covered the territory, you could no longer see landmarks.

I know on ps3 the map doesn't really zoom in and out much - you can't zoom out all the way to see the entire thing and you can't zoom in close enough to see anything really useful. It only works as a general indicator of where you should be heading. I don't know how it looks on a pc.

I'd prefer a paper style map to be honest. What is my character carrying a crystal ball or something so he can see the whole world from birdseye view? Also, on a paper map at least you can see the roads.

I defnitely do this, especially for traveling from Whiterun to Ivarstead.

Follow the road to Hillgrund's Tomb, then cut through the woods. If I cross the fallen tree over the river, I'm going the right way.

I am ok with the map. I play on the 360. I just wish we could zoom in more. The Zoom feature seems like a bit of a joke since you really can't Zoom in and Out much.

I really wish Bethesda did what the User Mods did with Oblivion and make it in Colour. That was awsome. Still I like the map just wish I could Zoom in more. Even have an option to turn of the icons so the map is not so cluttered.

Fog of War? More like fog of world! I have been playing the same character for 402 hours and I still can't see much of the world. And the zoom is worthless.
I am in agreement that this needs to be changed to work better, and not in someone's mod that may or may not be supported, but as an actual patch!
The map is cool, but when the character pulls out the map to remember that cow path she went down last month, she's actually pulling out her map, not taking a trip overhead on the back of a griffin or something. As suggested, make a toggle to change the map from world view to working view.

Also, add pins corresponding to a journal, so I can write notes as to what I encountered, when I visited, etc... i.e., "I saw a cave northwest of this spot, but encountered a dragon whose scales over-encumbered me, sending me back to Whiterun." (Yeah maybe not that wordy, but something to jog my overtaxed memory).

Yes, it's cool how the map is 3D, but it shows none of the roads, which makes it almost useless -.-

I never did care for it to begin with and guessed it will not be as useful as previous ones.

It does shows mountains decently but that's all sadly anything else is blurred to death or covered by mountains/trees/clouds.

Although prior to release thee 3 things were viewed as 1. Skyrim is in mountain land we need to see cliff faces (and use exploration as that reason) 2. Clouds are just fogs of war turns out it wasn't 3. Its pretty, therefor better then last games

But anyways mods will be my and many other solutions even the local map is better then it which I think would be great if the local map turned into the full map and use that although don't know how tough that would be to achieve.
