Are you disappointed in the World Map?

definitely a drawn map would have been nice. i get around fine with skyrims map but i dont like the idea of it. obviously just for show. doesnt take away from the game tho

I'm guessing you're playing on PC, then. There is a mod that clears the map up, as well. I'm a console user, so I can't benefit from it :wallbash:

It doesn't really help, just let's you see how poor it looks. And a bug that causes the square under player marker to turn into water :lmao:

Why can't i steal that map Farengar has? That would actually be useful!

I'd like the ability to TOGGLE between the "sky map" and a classic paper map that actually shows the roads and major trails.

Also right now I have 1,000 freaking icons cluttering my map, so I'd like a way to FILTER them... Like this for example:

SHOW:
(_) All
(X) All open quest locations
(_) Current quest location only
(_) Cleared quest locations
(X) Cities
(X) Towns
(_) Homesteads
(X) Forts
(_) Mines
(_) Caves
(_) Camps
(_) Landmarks
(_) Ancient Nord ruins
(_) Dwemer ruins
(X) Dragon lairs
(_) Forsworn camps
(_) Giant camps
(X) Khajiit merchant camps (last known location)

ETC.......

I think Bethesda forgot that it's supposed to be a map. The horrible thing they gave us would better serve some type of RTS.

Yes mainly because you cannot see the roads. The map is too fancy for its own good.

World map isn't pristine.

But [my] local maps are far worse. Don't know whether this falls in the glitch or bug or design mistep sections, but the local maps are terrible. Info from the world map overlaps with them and a handdrawn version would have been clearer.

think he meant 3D map overall, which has been shown almost every R/TTS game for awhile see http://media.pcgamer.com/files/2010/09/Civilization-5-demo-1024x488.jpg or http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/216180-review-anno-2070/3-620x.jpg both of which do have clouds in them but they are not just cosmetic they act as actual fog of war.

I wish it looked like an aged scroll like the one that came in the box. I often find myself referring to that one instead. That fact kind of illustrates the fact that the map in skyrim is kind of lame to be honest. We could have done without the 3D overland feature. Clearly marked roads would make exploring much easier.

Worst mapping system i have ever used.

The only thing good about it is fast travel. But for a game this expensive and this popular, it is hands down the worst map ever.

Disgustingly amateur. It was made in the back of the Bob's Computer shop down on Main Street.

From what I can see, the general consensus is that the map needs to be overhauled. Thus far, the best idea I have seen is a hybrid map that can be toggled and markers that can be filtered, all while the map slowly clears as you explore it; to put it simply

That bug is not from the mod, I think, as I have it on 360.
Had a similar bug in CIV once, about 20 years ago.

I'm more than disappointed in the World Map. It's one of the biggest screw ups in the game. I knew it would be when it was shown in one of the E3 demos.

A standard 2D map, something similar to what was included with the actual game, would have been much better.

I'm hoping it never dies. Bethesda needs a constant reminder of their screwups so that MAYBE we can get an actual decent RPG the next go around.

Map is terrible. As someone pointed out it was an obvious design decision to be more "Apple" like with form over function. Yay its sixy, but otherwise is a massive step backwards. That seems to be a trend actually...

I really dislike the map.

I haven't been using fast travel so I rely on it to plan my route. It's incredibly annoying when you get stuck somewhere because the clouds were hiding a major obsticle.

I found myself using the paper map that came in the box more. Unfortunately that one was drawn up by a very poor cartographer. But at least it shows roads and mountains.

They created 2 of the best RPG's to date so far, in Daggerfall and Morrowind. It's been going downhilll ever since. They are not doing their best. They are going backwards.

Could you be thinking of a certain body of water where a square of water disappears/beccomes transparent when looked at from a certain angle?

It probably should, seeing as most people are in agreement

Yes, almost entirely worthless. Needs to show the roads, the boarders and that cloudcover at the top needs to go so you can actually see where you are.

A stupid idea all around.

I use the paper map a lot of the time. It's more functional and prefer things that I can imagine my character is holding in his hand and actually looking at. That's also why I greatly prefer the character menu in Oblivion, because it was like a physical journal that you were looking at. And it was pretty to just flip through and look at. Skyrims is uninspired and purely functional.

This would also open up the option of roleplaying a cartographer.

That's one way of looking at it ... the other would be I'm showing my age again. Before computers helped us out so much, back when I started computer gaming, you had to draw your own maps if you wanted them (also your own journal). I guess I'm guilty of thinking like that when I talked about my char drawing her own map, what sort of map would I make, and it wouldn't be anything like the ones supplied by Bethesda.

But I like your answer better ... roleplaying a cartographer!

the map could have been super cool but like much of the game it seems poorly thought out and unfinished.

1. The zoom is a joke. Really why bother having it for how far it goes?

2. Why can't I go back to the menu from the map? I have to exit and call up the menu again. STUPID STUPID STUPID

3. Weather? Is my character somehow omniscient? I stand in solitude, but can tell you about cloud cover over Riften...

4. Rotation is limited, why?

5. There is no 're-orient' button - so if I do rotate that paltry 20deg then I can't hit a button to bring N back to the top.

Thing is, its not really a map anymore. Its some silly 3D live widget.. Who carries a map like this? I'd rather have a 2d map that has little triangles for mountains. Then I'm actually SURPRISED at the majestic peaks when I stumble upon them.

To me the map is almost a spoiler of sorts.
