Batman. The thread...

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 12:01 pm

When I was a kid Batman was my favorite superhero. I had no clue why, I always watched the cartoon while I was growing up and I fell in love with it. I recently finished Arkam City (I completed Arkham City) and I think I may finally understand why I loved him so.

Batman has always been popular, from his early days as a comic hero to his recent celebrity status as a star of the blockbuster films by Christopher Nolan. What really makes Batman what it is? Some would say its the setting, the Art Deco, dark and seedy Gotham City. Others would say it is his split identity as playboy Bruce Wayne or heroic Batman. Even more would say that it is the unique and devilish villians that truly make Batman what it is. This combination provides us with many views of the Dark Knight and the world that he protects. However for me it is a different opinion that makes Batman far superior to any other fictional character.

My first opinion is that of what has made Batman what he is and that is of course the many different authors, artists and directors who have given their own personal flavor to the character. Over the years Batman has come to represent many different personalities and artistic visions. This makes him an abstract vision of what makes an ideal hero for many different walks of life. Just think of the many time periods that Batman has gone through. He is everchanging and evolutionary but always remains a beacon of hope no matter the time or place in which he appears.

He is a thankless hero, a defender of a city that often does not deserve such a figure. He resides in a world of greed, a world of of prosperity, where the rich and the impoverished are clearly seperated by the areas they inhabit. It is an environment that breeds the criminals and supervillians that oppose the righteous and peaceful world which Batman upholds. Some would say that Gotham does not deserve saving, that they do not deserve a defender and it is this that I feel makes Batman such an enigmatic hero. You see Gotham is a world much like our own, filled with people who are ignorant of the troubles that effect the less fortunate. Going on with their daily lives is not a priveledge to them as it is to those constantly effected by crime, drugs, poverty and manipulation by forces of power. The citizens of Gotham are much like the middle and upper class, classes whose problems are first world like and dissimilar from those who live their lives and fear of death and destruction. And yet Batman defends them. Not only does he defend them, but he does so without superpowers. He uses his wealth and training, like a modern day Robinhood, to protect them. They do not recognize or appreciate him and yet he protects them. But Batman does not kill or hate the people he attacks, he incapacitates them, gives them a second, third or fourth chance. For he also understands that it is the people he protects that have allowed these criminals to come to fruition. He understands that the wealth and greed of those more fortunate that breeds the chaous and disillusionment of the lower class. Whose only option is to turn to a life of crime or find themselves a victim of the streets. Batman sees this because he is a member of both classes, priveledged since birth but taking to the streets in order to survive. He embodies the spirit of all of them but was strong in mind and body to fight for the forces of good. It is this that makes Batman a hero.

Read or not, I want this to be a discussion of Batman. Pretty much anything, from favorite villians, to movies, to comics. This thread can be as diverse as the Batman universe itself.,

I ordered Batman: Year One the other day and expect it to arrive sometime next week. It comes before The Dark Knight Returns in the Frank Miller series right?

I always loved Batman thanks to how much the plot revolved around insanity itself. The villains are definetly an aspect that helped draw me in, but I think what keeps me coming back for more is how human Batman himself is. Unlike the big blue idiot that you know won't die, or the guy that shoots web when he jerks off, I feel like I can connect alot more to Batman.

Anyways, my favorite villain is a rough clash between The Red Hood, Scarecrow, and Two Face. I really love the similarities that The Red Hood and Two Face hold in the animated series (though I am uncertain if The Red Hood was apart of that timeline or not, considering Tim Drake was a combination of Jason Todd and dike Grayson).

I wish the newer batman episodes were much more serious and emotionally stirring, instead of... instead of... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnjXklGIp5Q

jealousy?

Must be, the games are fantastic.

I've always been a big fan of batman too. Especially the more recent variations that take a more serious approach to it. I do a killer Joker impersination.

Do you wanna hear a story?

Woah... That was incredible. You should've replaced Heath Ledger and appeared in the newest film.

I like the two recent Batman games and the Christopher Nolan movies, other than that I'm not a huge batfan.

Hahahawhat. The Arkham games are some of the best games of the last few years.

I'm a big Batman fan, I'm not especially interested in other superheroes but for some reason I find Batman really compelling. I've read Hush, the Killing Joke, Year One and Arkham Asylum: ASHOSE, enjoyed them all, played both the Arkham games and seen most of the Batman films. I want to try and get into the cartoons, which is the one with Mark Hamill as the Joker?

The one that is the most iconic and well known is, " Batman, The Animated Series" an exciting title I know. In response to the comment about a more serious tone to the cartoons I say this....one thing that makes this license so cool is that it is so adaptable and can change for either its audience or the time period of its creation all while still giving off the same basic theme and overlying messages.

Yeah, I like to think that you could transfer the story to the 18th century or the distant future but it would still feel like Batman.

Been a Batman fan since I was a kid back in the sixties BEFORE the Adam West TV show. I pretty much got into it 'cuz I thought the suit and the car were so cool. I've been digging the much more serious take on the character since the 70's.
(just as an aside, my avatar <<<< is a pic of Conrad Veidt from the silent film "The Man Who Laughs" He was the original inspiration for the look of the Joker.)

Batman: The Animated Series

Also, I think he said that because it's not Deus Ex, because AS WE ALL KNOW, Deus Ex IS the ONLY true video game, and ANYONE who enjoys any others (aside from System Shock and Bethesda games) deserves to spend an eternity in hell playing Big Rigs Over The Road Racing.
Spoiler
My sarcasm machine ran out of batteries :(

OT, I also think batman is the best superhero, mainly because he's a human and because he acts like one. He has almost been killed and has almost killed people before. Also, he wasn't born with these abilities, he trained extensively and bought some things and then got to where he is now.

So, Batman. Anyone read the Killing Joke? Great story, best portrayal of the Joker, imo (tho Hammill takes the cake for voiceacting). The Long Halloween is also very good. Also just got Arkham City for Christmas and it is pretty awesome. :)

the games are very bad, gameplay wise. nearly every action is automatic. now thanks to the incredible reception catman:AC recieved we are gonna see even more games with simplistic and automated gameplay.

I sorta agree with apdenton. There were a few fun stealth segments in Arkham Assylum. I thought the Scarecrow segments were interesting platformer segments. And there were a couple points where you could use gadgets in ways I don't think the developers really intended, but the experience was otherwise pretty whatever. Single button combat can be okay if it requires the player to outmaneuver their opponents, but that wasn't really the case in AA. It seemed to me like general player agency was overall lacking.

Plus there were those awful segments where they removed camera control for some lame cinematic effect. Almost as stupid as quick time events. I haven't played city, so I'm not sure how many of these things carried over.

I agree to a point. The main problem I have with the recent Batman games is that you are not playing as batman, you are watching batman do cool things but you aren't doin them. You press "A" and he does an amazing backflip kick combo tat knocks down 3 guys. Now it looks cool but you didn't do that, there was no combo of buttons to master there was attack and counter.

As for batman himself I like the cartoon when I was young but it always irked me when people calle him a super hero, he is a hero, but there is nothing super about him besides his bank account. Just a rich dude with toys.

The first Red Hood was The Joker. My favourite villain has always been Joker. I know a lot of people liked him but because I have always been interested in the mind (even as a child, seeing as how I am "gifted") so the Joker was always interesting to me.

I like Nightwing better than Batman. dike Grayson for the win!

ahh but this is where you are wrong. batman is now officially a super hero. he has a detective mode that allows him to see through walls, he can use this infinately without consequence.

It is part of the lenses in his cowl. In the Dark Knight Batman used thermal vision at one point, which is similar to Detective mode.
