I'm a bit surprised that so many women play Skyrim

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:09 am

I am not surprised at all that there are lots of girls playing Skyrim, or RPG's in general.

Come on people, men and women are more similar to each other than a lot of people realise.

Or maybe it's more accurate to say we are all individuals, and our interests and opinions aren't as reliant on our gender than a lot of people think.

I agree.

As society has progressed, the difference in the treatment and expectations of men and women have reduced.

Stereotypically manly or girly things are a lot more acceptable to the other six nowadays, and I personally think that's a good thing.

I disagree. Look at some of the US presidential candidates. Look at the world, look at the religious feuds. The fight is not over, and the obscurantists are striking back vigorously.

oh, so defensive, sounds like someones deflecting...troll

I actually agree with him. If you know your sixuality, you won't be afraid to play a "girl" character. Because you know you are attracted to girls, you know you aren't going to "become" gay or something like that.

But everybody probably has his own reasons, and these kind of games are about doing what you want, so it's not that big a deal, esp in a solo game.

I am way less tolerant about people who are deceiving others on multiplayer games. But like it's been said, it's the internet: you get everything down there.

Just looking at Skyrim on tumblr you see tons of women posting things about it.

Hmm.. It makes sense actually.

Women often prefer things that are more story driven and immersive, relatively speaking, while men are often more action oriented. If any genre of games fits girls in general well, then it'll be RPG's.

I know two girls who play skyrim. I don't think I would want to date a girl who was really into video games. I can't stand it when a girl just wants to sit around and do nothing with free time, be it computer games, surfing the internet, watch tv, etc. On the other hand, when I am single I play alot, almost constantly- however if I was in a relationship I would not be playing, I'd rather be focusing on my partner and my life.

A lot of women apparently play Sim and puzzle games too, and there's not much story there.

I'm a 34 male, and my favorite genre was adventure (you don't see them much anymore, but it's rarely action driven. maybe the most recent title that borrows a lot of ideas from them is LA Noire). Constant action bores me.. games that just push it give me no time to stop and smell the roses, get a feel for the story or characters. It feels spastic. The only area I really tolerate it is racing. Even then though, it'd probably be funny to have some storyline in that. Like roleplaying Ricky Bobby or something. haha.

A girl I know who plays Skyrim literally flirted with me using the cheesy pickup line that female NPCs use to indicate they'd be receptive if you wore the Amulet.

She knew I played it too, took the cheesy voice and went "Its a fine day with you around!" XD I was rolling on the floor.
That's hilarious!

I could on google and find a random girls picture and put it as my avatar. If you been on the internet long enough you'll know 98% of those women are acually men.

Yes and 99% of women pretend to be men to avoid the puerile misogynistic who still have trouble believing women play computer games.

In any case, a game isn't going to make close a billion [censored] dollars, and be merely the result of one demographic.

Threads like this always amuse me. I am female, I love gaming. My fiance is very male, wouldn't play Skyrim if you paid him. His gaming consists of word games and blasterball. I, on the other hand, have original, still in their shrink-wrap Tex Murphy Pandora Directive discs that I wouldn't sell if you paid me. :-)

I have so many adventure games in my closet.

But I stil don't think of myself as a gamer. I like playing stories. Skyrim is a good storytelling tool - once I mod the stuff I don't like out.

I am always looking for good games to exercise my imagination with. (Playing through the Longest Journey right now, too. Fun!)

Fact: Girls don't play video games.
Fact: Guys who play video games don't talk to girls. So, don't act like you know any who play.

The yahoo link is evidence of puerile and misogynistic behavior directed at females not a source.

Further, the wiki articles list sources for the demographics, you may research that out if it is important to you.

Not quite related, but sometimes I see the same weird misconceptions with age too. Where some kid who just got done svcking his mom's teet doesn't think many older people play games. As if games were invented just yesterday or something. Most people with the cash to blow on them are independent and working.

Hang around on TES Alliance for a while talking to people....you quickly find that many many people playing ES games are women.

I really don't see why people are surprised.......video games aren't a male thing, women have been a large majority for years.

I demand to see statistical proof that female + video games = unusual. Is this one of the misogynist prejudices, like "women can't be soldiers"?

Either way, [censored] statistics. All you have to do is go outside and meet people.

edit: Hell, even when picking this game up, the store had a special late night opening, and plenty of females were there. Like tons. Too many people in general. I hate lines.

Mother of God! That looks like REAL armor! /admire

Imagine the Dragonborn with a phone:

- Hello?
- Am I speaking to random Marauder Bandit?
- Yes, this is me.
- I'm Dragonborn.
- How did you get the number to my secret hiding cave?
- Fus Ro Dah! (cick)

On topic:
I used to spend a lot of time on the forum of another video game company (Paradox) years ago helping with mods and stuff like that with strategy games like Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Europa Universalis, and there were very few women there (although there were some). There seems to be more here. The RPG genre probably interests women more.

In a lot of countries they actually can't be. Or at least they aren't allowed to be on the frontline. Which is also dumb.

But thankfully nobody's stopping female gamers playing the same titles anybody else. I've always found that fantasy games in particular have always drawn in female players. From table-top to MMOs. It's really not a big deal.

Whilst I do agree women play video games, close to equal with men these days. They are not a large majority

misogynist
I wonder how long that'll work until people refuse to be bullied and intimidated by baseless accusations such as this.
It is your job to research the numbers, if available, and understand the online communities you are part of. The majority of the poeple surfing the internet are men. The majority of gamers are men. The vast majority of rpg players are quite clearly men. Whether or not you formally acknowledge this, or approved of this, is not all that important. I bothered replying to your ignorance in the hope you might look into this subject right now, but maybe I should not be that optimistic.
Good day.

Yeah, asses use the internet. Not sure you needed to point further than this forum

I wasn't neccesarilly saying they weren't valid, just that they aren't taken seriously.
(My post is probably subject to my statement to Fishy)

Making a "by fiat" declarations out of your ass,
