Compensation for FONV?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 11:31 pm

I bought fallout:nv the day of release. Now, I don't have a lot of time to spend playing a game and I normally (rarely) go to game developer sights. I had no idea of the corruption bug problem for FO:NV. So, a few weeks after playing it, I experience the corruption bug. Did a search on it and come to find out I wasn't alone. So, I give it a week or two, and nothing. Haven't played it since. I even tried to take it back (best buy), and was told there was nothing they could do. So, I'm patiently waiting for the patch, but it's really annoying not being able to play a game I've had for a long time.

Anyways, this has really put a dark cloud on me (and others I'm sure) on FO and Obsidian. Anyways, considering the amount of time it's taking to get a working patch in order, I don't think it would be out of place to suggest that the first DLC be given or reduced price for those who have the game up to this point.

While I'm not blacklisting Bethesda and I'm not going to say "I'm never buying a game" again, I will never buy a game that comes out from them on first release. More than likely I will not buy until the game has been out for a while.

I think them giving something to the customers who were loyal or really enjoyed the game should be compensated for this, besides "here's a patch to make the game playable". I understand they are a company and are out to make money but hopefully they understand how important PR is and while something like this can't be erased, it would go a long way to show they do care about their customers.

Maybe you should explain where you're going with this.

He paid money for it and couldn't play it because, as we all know, the game was shipped in a horrendously broken state.

Why don't you resume your "I've never had a crash in 50 hrs of play" save and continue playing the game in la-la land with the rest of the [removed]

Yea I agree completely. Some customer appreciation would be great like some free downloadable content or something.

Thats an unfair statement to the OP. Even though I haven't had any problems with FONV I sympathize with people that do and don't try to shift the blame to those that are having problems. As for "he wasn't forced to play the game" he did buy it unaware of the problems some were having with the game. Many gamers do not and should not be expected to do extensive research to determine if a game is having problems or not. While he is not forced to play it, he did buy it, and now can't return it even though he can't play it. I beleive that is the OP's point.

As for getting free or reduced price for the DLC I'm fairly sure that will not happen, and we have been assured that the patch is finished and just being approved. I hope that the game is fixed for you and you can enjoy the game as much as I am.

The fact is if you want this size of a game this early on from this size of a company your gona have to live with some interesting bugs for a few weeks to a few months. If you cant handle that then your just gona be sad.

Yes, thank you. I shouldn't have to research a game to see if it has huge problems, and I've seen enough posts here and other places that it's not a solitary event. I've not had any game I've ever bought for a console have this much trouble. Not just the saves (those are the biggest) but other little ones. I usually buy console games because I'm usually assured of a fairly clean game (all games have bugs, but I can't recall any one that was crippling). Nor can I return the game which is fair, it has been months since the game came out.

I also don't think they will do this either, but I do think it should be brought up. Like I said, this is one of the FEW console game message boards I've actually visited. It's not something I do as a past time.

You know, it is comments like that made in some posts that get topics closed. It is fine to discuss the need for compensation without resorting to flaming and flamebaiting, however, if you want this to remain open then please be civil and constructive. Thanks guys.

This inane retort might have a smidgen of apropos if the OP downloaded the game for free.

As it is he likely payed 60+ USD for it - and as such he's entitled to a product that works.

I hate that people complain about how terrible this game is, but this isn't really a complaint. I agree that many people have experienced horrible bugs and glitches. It would show something about Beth if they took the time to give something to say "Sorry for the inconvenience".

@ OP: I totally sympathize with the problems you and many others are having. I know I'd be pretty pizzed too if I were having them. I got the corruption bug on my first character and lost close to 40 hours of play. However, while it was disappointing that I lost that much time, I was still able to just start a new character and continue to play. Sure, you might lost that first character but you should still be able to start a new one and continue playing. (Unless there is something I don't know about of course.)

I hope you can continue to play, because it really is a great game.

I will simply disagree with this. A company no matter what size shouldn't release something with so many issues. If a game is too big for them to tackle and complete, they shouldn't take on the challenge or delay release. People shouldn't accept faulty games as "a norm" because of it's size.

I research anything that I'm laying down significant money for. Doing your due diligence is just the prudent thing to do in this day and age of reduced pride in workmanship.

However, this does not absolve the company of any responsibility. And I support any of you unhappy consumers that choose to vote with your wallet.

When a patch is released I will play. I am not "rabid hate". What this does for me at least, is in the future, any game released by Bethesda or Obsidian will not be a "must buy". I will wait to buy it, which is good for me in that I will get it cheaper or more than likely buy it used after it's been out for a long time. Nothing huge, and nothing extreme about it. I'm sure I'll enjoy it (except for the music...same songs...over and over...), but something for the trouble from Bethesda/obsidian would go a LONG WAY in my view of them and their products in the future mainly in the extent of "sure, they released a horribly buggy game, but they do care about their customers and last time they gave away their first DLC for free for one week right before xmas, which showed some customer appreciation.

To be fair, even if I did do the research of the game, I'm not quite sure the bugs itself were evident until weeks (maybe a few days not sure honestly since I didn't start looking it until after I experience it) afterwards. Many of the game magazines were so excited about the game they failed to report it/didn't do enough gameplay to experience it. It seemed like many of the gaming sights were more of the really devoted fan quality than quality for quality sake. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

We had a discussion in another thread about the merits of reviewers leaving out mention of bugs or marking a score up despite the game being clearly unstable. Without generalizing too much, it appeared that it was mostly fans of Obsidian that felt a game's bugs had no place being mentioned in a review and had no place overtly affecting the score.

Your post, I think, is a good example as to why this is a disingenuous practice that needs to be reformed.

As for a gratis DLC, I think I remember hearing this is exactly what RockStar Games did because of the level of bad bugs that were in Red Dead Redemption. I may be wrong on that, (I don't have a console, I just remember hearing that this happened) but it was obviously well-received by the consumers.

That is the most ridiculous statement that I have seen on any of the forums! Developers have a responsibilty to ship games that are playable and all he is saying is that it would be nice if they would release the patch that they have been promising since the game's release and compensate us with the first DLC free! I do not think that is unreasonable at all!

I totally agree. i pre ordered and bought the game the first day it came out as well as the strategy guide. so thats about $90 worth of stuff just collecting dust since the end of october. If they do not compensate us somehow, i will never ever buy another obsidian/bethesda game of the 1st day again. i have always supported and loved both companies. i cant begin to explain all the great times i had with their previous games but they were buggy too and this is the last straw. the least they could do is issue a formal apology...

No you're right. For those that bought the game the first day/midnight, there wouldn't have been the feedback on this forum yet.

I must confess I bought it at midnight myself but didn't think of bugs on this game because I bought FO3 a year after it came out (GOY edition). It was already pretty clean by then. Luckily I'm having very few problems with NV on Xbox (knock on wood).

If you're on console, try cleaning your lasers every 10 hours. I've been doing that and it has eliminated freezing completely. Maybe this will enable you to play your game right now? Give it a shot.
