Actually give me a rundown of how all the weapon types handle. I'm curious. Also is it me or do crossbows svck? What advantage do they offer?
There are a lot of weapons in this game, some of which are pretty unique in how they handle. Here's a basic rundown of all the major categories, but keep in mind, they're pretty broad, and
all of them have exceptions.
-Swords are good all around. They got strong movesets for both one-handed and two-handed stances, decent speed and range. They're good out in the open and their thrust attacks make them serviceable in narrow corridors. They're the Jack of All Stats of weapons.
-Curved swords are faster than straight swords, but they lack the latter's range. Their strong attacks are pretty meh, and they replace the kick with an attacking backflip.
-Katanas are...kind of sad. Not that they're particularly horrible, but they're a shadow of what they were in Demon's Souls, lacking the nice arcing swings of that game. Their movesets are pretty mediocre, and they also have low durability, making them susceptible to breaking.
-Whips are a joke, don't use them.
-Spears are good weapons for a beginner mostly because you can attack with them while blocking. This method of attack is good in both tight halls and places with precarious footing. Unfortunately, you have to rely on locking onto enemies with them, which can make hitting some enemies difficult.
-Rapiers are similar to spears in that you can attack and block with them simultaneously. They sacrifice a little bit of range, but tend to be faster.
-Halberds are decent. They hit hard and their attacks got these nice sweeping motions that allow them to hit several enemies at once. They're kind of slow and awkward, though, and are a poor choice of weapon in narrow places.
-Daggers are weak and lack range, but have the highest critical damage. If you want to use them, learn how to parry and riposte.
-Great swords are slow and awkward and require really precise timing to work. They hit like a truck, though, and are the most likely to knock an enemy on its ass.
-Great curved swords can combo attacks more easily than great swords, but they have a very long start-up time.
-And...I, uh, don't seem to have any experience with maces, axes, or fist weapons. Huh. Sorry, can't help you there.

-Yes, crossbows svck. Go bow or go home.
My advice: experiment with every new weapon you come across (provided your stats meet the requirements). Test their strong and fast attacks, charging attacks, rolling attacks, and backstep attacks in one and two hands. See what works best for you.
