Dark Souls Discussion Thread #3 (PC version confirmed!)

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:34 am

Aside from a bit of good timing, nothing but patience/playing methodically.
It's not that I think Dark Souls isn't challenging at times, because it is, but more that it's a relatively good level of challenge. It's not unfair, and everything can be overcome with a bit of work on your end.

I said in my original post that
1. It's the most difficult game of all time
and
2. Which is just about right (the difficulty)
What point are you disputing? I'm very confused.
I'd just like to get an idea of what games you consider more difficult than Dark Souls, as a gamer. Every gamer is different, and entitled to their own opinions and tastes.

I'm disputing the fact that it's the most difficult game in the world. All the advertising tries to make it out as such, and that's largely what it's reputation has become as a result. It has a level of difficulty in the attention and care it requires of you as a player, but it's just not this ridiculously hard, punishing game.

As for what games I find difficult? Well, personally, I can't do games that require very quick and precise control input, like fighting games for instance.

I agree with Septiego. It is a difficult game, but I don't think it will go down as an all time hardest game.

Edit
Got around to playing some more. At some castle near the starting area. It's got some skeletons. Inside the sewer is a giant rat leading to said castle. Lots of bomb throwers. Anyone know the name of this place?

Ah, oh my god absolutely crushing defeat. 3k souls. I was doing so good, I was literally on my way to go heal/save/level. I've not even used more than 2 of my flasks. So I'm doing great clearing this place out. I go to fight some skeletons. I miss my swing, no problem. Then I attack again and I accidentally triggered jump attack right into 3 monsters. I still don't even know what I pressed. This is like the 5th time I've died to that jump attack. I wish I could toggle it off in a menu or something. (PS3) So I lost my 3k souls and about 3 humanity. I tried to go back for it, but ended up dying again. The second time was my fault for rushing. Still such a dumb death (the first one).

It happens if you tap up on the anolog stick twice and attack IIRC. And don't worry, I lost 10k souls in the valley of drakes thinking I could kill one of the drakes no problem...lost all my health within ten seconds of the fight.

I haven't found any humanity in undead burg yet though. I think I had it all when I died. :(

Okay, that aside, for future reference, the jumping attack is done when you press R2 while nudging the left anolog stick up.

Likewise, if you nudge the stick up and press R1, you'll do a kick...unless you're wielding a curved sword, in which case you do a worthless backflip attack. That [censored] move has gotten me killed a few times. :flame:

That move is great. It's just used entirely different than the kick (which I think most people prefer, which is probably why they dislike the flip). Curved blades have you fighting incredibly close to your enemy; the flip is great to finish off a string of attacks and get some distance before the enemy attacks.

Edit: Gamgee, the most souls/humanity I've lost is about thirteen million/ninety-nine, respectively. That was soul-crushing (even though I wasn't using them for anything anymore and they had only accumulated to such a number because of PvP). Those first couple of loses feel pretty devastating though. What makes them all the more devastating is that, at least for me, it was always some stupid mistake I had made, like accidentally falling off a ledge.

So far sticking with the battle axe I found, hasn't really been anything else worth while. Then again I'm not very far either. How do spears/halberds handle? I was wondering if it would be a good investment.

Edit
My http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_QP9qYaOq0 to get me into epic monster slaying mood.

Edit2
Actually give me a rundown of how all the weapon types handle. I'm curious. Also is it me or do crossbows svck? What advantage do they offer?

Crossbows can be useful in PvP (and I suppose in PvE to an extent) to interrupt actions like item consumption, but aside from that, I don't see much merit in them.

As for the rest of the weapons, I'm not really sure how to give a run-down of them; many of them have alterations to the move-set so you've kind of just got to try them. The main thing to think about is if you like the quick dexterity based weapons or the generally slower strength based weapons. I say this because you'll likely end up pumping one of the two attributes for damage scaling (weapons scale via attributes if you've noticed). Of course, there are weapons that scale with other stats like faith or intelligence, but they still generally behave like one of the former two weapon camps.

There are a lot of weapons in this game, some of which are pretty unique in how they handle. Here's a basic rundown of all the major categories, but keep in mind, they're pretty broad, and all of them have exceptions.

-Swords are good all around. They got strong movesets for both one-handed and two-handed stances, decent speed and range. They're good out in the open and their thrust attacks make them serviceable in narrow corridors. They're the Jack of All Stats of weapons.

-Curved swords are faster than straight swords, but they lack the latter's range. Their strong attacks are pretty meh, and they replace the kick with an attacking backflip.

-Katanas are...kind of sad. Not that they're particularly horrible, but they're a shadow of what they were in Demon's Souls, lacking the nice arcing swings of that game. Their movesets are pretty mediocre, and they also have low durability, making them susceptible to breaking.

-Whips are a joke, don't use them.

-Spears are good weapons for a beginner mostly because you can attack with them while blocking. This method of attack is good in both tight halls and places with precarious footing. Unfortunately, you have to rely on locking onto enemies with them, which can make hitting some enemies difficult.

-Rapiers are similar to spears in that you can attack and block with them simultaneously. They sacrifice a little bit of range, but tend to be faster.

-Halberds are decent. They hit hard and their attacks got these nice sweeping motions that allow them to hit several enemies at once. They're kind of slow and awkward, though, and are a poor choice of weapon in narrow places.

-Daggers are weak and lack range, but have the highest critical damage. If you want to use them, learn how to parry and riposte.

-Great swords are slow and awkward and require really precise timing to work. They hit like a truck, though, and are the most likely to knock an enemy on its ass.

-Great curved swords can combo attacks more easily than great swords, but they have a very long start-up time.

-And...I, uh, don't seem to have any experience with maces, axes, or fist weapons. Huh. Sorry, can't help you there. :(

-Yes, crossbows svck. Go bow or go home.

My advice: experiment with every new weapon you come across (provided your stats meet the requirements). Test their strong and fast attacks, charging attacks, rolling attacks, and backstep attacks in one and two hands. See what works best for you.

I'll most likely go lancer. Ie spear. In Monster Hunter it was generally my favourite category of weapon. That or the gunlance, but this game doesn't have those. :(

Edit
Or I'll hang around the newbie zone. Also how do I sell gear I don't want? Can I even do that?

The only way to sell something is to feed it to an epicly huge worm that'll pay you in souls for the pleasant bite. The more pleasant the item, the more souls you get.

And a spear is a great choise sir

Tried the basic spear, I dunno. It's very hard to get an opening on shielded enemies. More trouble than its worth really. Against the other types of enemies it is also okay. It does take a few swings to bring things down. I'm really liking the battle axe I found though. It's wrecking those undead pretty bad around my area. Next up on my list to try is the bow and arrow. I haven't really ventured to far yet, just getting familiar with the weapons and stuff. How do I drop gear? It's really piling up. Also any NPC's/merchants around? So far I've found the guy who tells you of the bells, the undead merchant, and the guy who asks you to join a covenant.

To drop gear, simply go to the item you don't want (via the inventory menu, NOT the equipment menu!), press X, and select "Drop." Later on, you can buy a Bottomless Box which allows you to store items at the bonfires.

A little tip for dealing with shielded enemies: try and get around them for a backstab. Or kick them while they're turtling; that'll leave them open for a second or so. I enjoy kicking them off cliffs myself.

As for merchants, well...you'll find a blacksmith near the bonfire in the Undead Parish, once you get past the church that's populated by the Balder Knights (the guys wearing capes). You'll have to fight the Taurus Demon boss before you reach that area, though.

In the stairs leading to lower undead burg or whatever there is this gigantic knight undead with a sword. What is the name of said enemy? Also is it possible to kill it with basic gear? Is it worthwhile to even go down there at this point, or will each fight be like a mini-boss battle?

I assume said knight in question is black. If so, he can be killed by a naked player with fists if you're so inclined. Black Knights are dispersed throughout the world and they're all meant to be rather troublesome enemies, but are no more special than an undead warrior.

Ah, because my spear was doing almost no damage. Also I got invaded by a player somehow. A very high level one from the looks of him. I couldn't even touch him. I would bounce off him doing only 15-20 dmg. What exactly happened there?

Black Knights can be killed with basic gear, and you'll get a sizable amount of souls plus some rare ore for your trouble (used for upgrading weapons). Unlike most enemies, they also stay dead when killed. The one you've encountered is guarding a ring, but it's a pretty crappy one that's not really worth the hassle.

If you want to try defeating him now, which is possible, it'll take some patience. I recommend backstabbing him whenever you can, as well as using firebombs (especially the black ones) if you've got them.

You encountered a twink. He wasn't a high level, what he most likely did was rush to some later parts of the game getting some souped up gear without ever increasing his Soul Level. Now he's spending his time trolling beginners like you. Don't sweat it if you got killed by him; the first part of the game is the only area where you're likely to get invaded by twinks.

EDIT--

I JUST REMEMBERED! There is a blacksmith you can meet right now! If you go down at Firelink Shrine and go into new Londo, you can find a guy called Rickert somewhere near the beginning. He can improve your gear (provided you've got the right ores), repair it, and even sells some spells as well. Can't believe I forgot all about him!

Like Xetirox said, he wasn't a high level; the way invading works is that you can only invade players approximately the same level as you or higher, so the game tries gives the invaded the advantage. He's just a troll.
