Dawnguard should cost 4 bucks

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 3:07 pm

Think about it. Skyrim was estimated by Todd Howard to be 300 hours, and cost 60 bucks. That is five hours per buck. He then estimated Dawnguard to be 20 hours, but it cost 20 bucks. So, to be fair to the regular game, Dawnguard should reduce its cost down to 4 bucks.

You're lucky the dlc doesn't cost $60, most games give 10-20 hours. Think about it.

Coke should also cost 35 cents, but it's a dollar because of mark up. I think you'll live. Besides, SUPPORT YOUR DEVELOPER!!!!! It's not easy being in the game industry!

Note, the main quest of the DLC has a specific number of hours one would likely spend, but it also includes many enhancements to the main game which extend playability a great deal.

No, its pure logic, you are getting the same amount of content per dollar.

Yeah, but it's not like they are coming up with a new engine or building game mechanics from scratch, which has to take up, what, have of the development of each game, but not each DLC.

Plus, DLCs tend to be wackier and are the most exciting part of TES IMO. The storyline is always important. Shivering Isles was worth it alone to become a Daedric Prince and get the Staff of Sheogorath. You got to take loot and newfound power into perspective as well. Not to mention the iddy biddy side quests.

Since when has game length ever equaled price, if that is true then pretty much every game out there should be no more than $10 - $20 really.

Well, keep in mind, RPGS are about developing your character over a long period of time, and TES is also about exploring a vast area. Action games (good action games in particular, like Half life or metal gear solid, not call of duty) are about quick and brutal combat. While you get less content per se, the developers spent far more time perfecting each inch of the game in an action game as opposed to an RPG, so its not fair to compare the two

Game length vs price is a tricky thing, you can't really compare it. Sure if you pay $60 for an 8 hour single player game then that's probably overpriced, but you can't expect Bethesda to offer a 20 hour long expansion for $5 just because the original game can be played for very long.

If Todd said 300 hours, I'm sure he wasn't talking about how long to finish the game, that's more like 50 or 60 hours. So the DLC is right in line price-wise.

Just as a simple DLC, Dawnguard is giving more hours of content than a lot of stand-alone games that cost sixty bucks, and it's fourty bucks cheaper.

Something can be pure logic and still be wrong. That's where the termed "failed logic" comes from. :P I'm personally very happy to only be paying $20 for the DLC. 'Tis to support the developers, after all. :bunny:

Didn't we just have a 6 page discussion on this exact thing last week?

Well, if so...then it would be time for thread #2 anyway.

Don't for a second believe games are priced based on Lenght, this never was and most likely never will be the case, "Hours long" statements are purely PR and have little basis in practicality (in gameplay, not marketing, because WOE it works in marketing) and generally the discerning buyer would ignore such statements.
