Dear Ice troll of the thousand steppes.

Save and save often. I turn off the autosave feature. This forces a habit of saving. You will be rewarded by doing that, come crash or kill.
I mainly turned it off simply because it got annoying for the game to just save. It seemed to ruin the moment of an Dragon Priest Battle. Anyway, I swear that Frost Troll gets annoying... I'll go up there whenever I'm bored and will just maul him as a level 56, with "YOL TOOR SHUL!!!", and dual fireball...

Maybe the OP has turned off autosaving if he is a victim of the crashes the 1.6 patch caused some of the Xbox 360 players. I am forever forgetting to save.

My first character encountered the Frost Troll of the Steps at a low level, he had to jump off the path and sneak by him in the end and make a run for it. My second character waited till she was well up in sneaking and archery, and shot him dead first go. My third started after the last patch is meant to be an Orc warrior, but he would have to be the weakest of my characters, at level 10 he was having trouble with just about anything. Chickened out way down the steps after finally managing to kill the wolf and about the second snowy sabre cat, no way was I going past that Frost Troll with this weakling. I detoured and went up the very top of the mountain before coming down right on top of High Hrothgar, the Frost Troll never set eyes on my fragile little Orc.

You know I might just go back to the throat of the world and FUS RO DAH his ass off the mountain, if he spawns again.

I beat this troll at a low level by having a shield in one hand and the flames spell in the other. Bash and Burn!

He is a pain for low level characters. Should I meet it when I am to weak to fight it I tend to just run past it. Works wonders :D

I never had a problem with the Ice Troll on the steps to High Hrothgar, probably because I'm always level 30+ before I start the main quest on any of my characters.

I was far to lazy to ride to ivarstead again so I just glitched myself up the side of the mountain and avoided him completely.

Oh yeah I remember him. funny thing in my first play through I never ran into him. I think in my hippy tree hugging wandering a stumbled into the 1000 steps after the troll part. Imagin my suprise my second play through ;)

Also, Jarl of Windhelm gives you a weapon that does fire damage if I remember correctly, and somewhere in the MQ before you're sent to High Hrothgar you get a fire ball scroll.

The thing about trolls is that they have to do their smack-the-ground dance as soon as they see you, and they won't stop their dance even as you're blasting away at them with fireballs.

I died my first try. I refused to bring Lydia for help. The climb of High Hrothgar is a personal journey, a test to see if you are worthy to meet the Greybeards. If you cannot climb the steps, you do not deserve to learn the Way of the Voice. This is why I died multiple times in my attempts to defeat the troll. Because I refused help. Eventually I defeated him without fire; without magic; without a sneak attack. I went against him with a steel sword and a banded iron shield. I defeated him with skill alone. I learned the Thu'um. I am Dragonborn.

@Inglar Same here; they go ape-dance and by the time they are near I already put them on fire/full of arrows. Only thing that gets me on low levels is when they come in packs :(

You went too close to him. Easiest way is to go on the outer hillside immediately when the steps before him ends.

Yeah, he's usually a tough one. Though the Axe of Whiterun usually has fire enchantment, so it helps against it. Remember to always flame trolls. In the game, i mean :whistling:

Every time I get that axe it's got Turn Undead on it. Every time. I hate it.

Thee troll though, I usually just calm him.
And on the very rare occasion I'm not playing an Illusionist, I run right past him.

I also always get that enchantment. And the weapon itself has been war axe, battleaxe, sword and greatsword. And it has been both steel and orcish.
