Dear Ice troll of the thousand steppes.

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:15 am

Screw you. Seriously.

I just spent 1 hour getting to Ivarstead, climbing all of those damn stairs and then you killed me. I was brought back to my last autosave in whiterun. I lost 2 levels and 300 gold because of you.

Rot in hell ice troll of the thousand steppes, may you pay for all the non mages you have killed.

Yes, he can be quite a pain in the early levels. The first time I went up those steps I died too. I got Lydia and went back up. Together we managed it.

But there's an upside to this. Each time you go back up you will be a little stronger than before. Each time that fight will be a little easier than it was the last time. By the time you're level 15 or 20 you'll able to clean his clock easily. That's very satisfying. ;)

I feel your pain. My very first character climbed those steps, only to be mauled by the Ice Troll.

I hate that troll! It took me a half hour to sneak past him. I stood on top of a nearby rock, not able to go forward or backwards, wondering if I should just reload a previous save. Then the troll inexplicably ran down the path a short distance, until he was just out of my line of sight. I jumped down and ran as fast as I could up the steps and got away from him.

I'm sorry you lost a couple levels because of him.

Wasn't that phrased at the bottom of a pic entitled "Nemesis", where it displays a guy pushing a boulder up a hill? :hehe:

I love this ice troll. He's just the right enemy on this path: almost impossible to beat at a low level, but slow enough for you to run past him. It's probably the only early-game element that shows that your character is weak and unfit to take on the world just yet. The ice troll and also Falmer if you happen to stumble across their lair.

The worst part is that I literally lost a hour of my life. Nothing was gained.

I only needed one more arrow to kill him! :sadvaultboy:

Just keep running, then when he jumps down to attack you hit him with a fus (unrelenting force) or yol (fire breath). He will be stunned and you can just run to the top, easy.

If you fight trolls enough you will see they have a hugely predictable attacking style, it's very easy to attack, move back dodging their attack, move in to attack.

Save and save often. I turn off the autosave feature. This forces a habit of saving. You will be rewarded by doing that, come crash or kill.

The plane of OblivionThe whole of Skyrim is a dangerous place. Save often.

I like to go up with dual cast calm, and not kill a thing. Way of the voice in action.

Horse or fire bolt spell makes it a lot easier, the troll take a lot damage from fire bolt even if it's weak.

Don't blame the ice trolls, blame your own inability to save a lot in a game with RPG elements.
(Really though, it's a game with RPG elements, a unwritten rule of RPG's and games with RPG elements is: Save a lot. Cause things will [censored] up one way or another)

Funny that you mention it. On my last playthrough there was no Ice Troll there but a Dragon attacked me a few minutes later on my way up. Did someone else had that too?

Not exactly the same but I was climbing (jumping frantically) from the west side of the Throat Of The World, and when I started nearing the path a blood dragon came at me.

I had a choice between jumping off the cliff or consuming my health potions and continue climbing.
I eventually made it up to the path and once there I killed the dragon.
Proud I was. :)

Then I got my ass smacked by an ice troll. :<

Minus the frantic jumping up the Throat of the World that's pretty much what happened my second time up there with my first character. A regular dragon appeared and I had hoped it would kill the troll for me, but alas, that damnable troll was victorious. :stare:
