Disappointed with Skyrim.

It was not worth $60. The game is becoming almost totally unplayable with the excessive bugs, bitterly disappointing :( If I were still in the UK I would lodge a complaint with the consumer protection authorities. End result is that I will never buy another game for $60. or buy another game from Bethesda unless they fix these problems after taking my hard earned money. I will most likely never buy another console after this and PC's are no better as they are out of date before the packaging print is dry. I can think of better ways to spend $60. were I can have something to show for my time and learn, or improve, a real life skill.

Am I the only person who hasn't had any problems with bugs outside the game crashing on me twice before that was fixed by a patch?

I've heard that the PS3 version's screwed up, and PC players have performance issues but I don't know how much of that is hardware related, but I'm in the 360 and it's one of the most worthwhile game purchases I've made. Really though, if you're going to go the route of "why would I spend money on a game when I could learn a real life skill"....frankly it's strange that you're frequenting a video game board. $60 seems a lot, as even new games don't tend to be more than £40 where I buy them, but it's about entertainment. I've had plenty of tiresome conversations with people trying to explain that not every moment of one's life must be based around earning money or learning things - it's just enjoyment, I buy and play games because I get pleasure from playing them, they don't need to perform any greater service than that.

Crashes, for me (on 360), got so bad that the game crashed at the end of character creation. I was already fed up with Skyrim, that just finished it off for me as a player.

Improve a real life skill for $60? Mmmm, k. Anyways, dollar for dollar, games are the best entertainment investment going. Go to the movies? Hah- spend that much just for 2 hours of temporary entertainment. It's pretty hard to find any kind of RL entertainment that is anywhere near as cheap as video games, hour for hour. And when you get a really good one, that you spend 200, 300, 800 hours playing? Dirt cheap, son, dirt cheap. Sorry to hear you don't like Skyrim, but I feel I got more than my money's worth out of it, no problem.

I find it hard to believe that you don't have problems when the majority of this forum does. PC's will have problems because no 2 PC's are identical.
I'm using the Xbox for Skyrim where the software and hardware are identical to every other Xbox. It can't be the physical CD therefore it is the software.

In America it is $60. take it or leave it, is not a valid currency in American stores.
Although it is hard to tell the difference between the UK & USA, games are more expensive in the US.
UK games, as with DVD's, are regional based so a UK game will not work in the USA.

"frankly it's strange that you're frequenting a video game board"
Hardly "frequenting", looks like you have been on this forum longer than I.

There is no enjoyment in a purchase full of flaws unless it enhances the product.
If you don't want to learn anything in life that is your business.

No. No. No. No.

3D is a gimmick. It will die a slow, lingering death, just as it did every other time that people said it was really going to take off as the new entertainment medium. Any company wasting their time on 3D development is instantly suspicious to me.

All I'll say is don't be so quick to jump to conclusions especially if you have never tried something for yourself.

I was never a fan of 3D but after being invited to my friend's flat (which can only be described as 'the batcave') I was impressed with how well 3D worked with games. Sure applying it to everything would be stupid but Skyrim is the one of the few games that I'm sure would look great.

Don't mock it until you've tried it

After having read the thread, guess I'll make a comment or two about Skyrim:

What I like: beautiful graphic environment (have taken over 280 screenshots of just breath taking scenery; who needs wallpaper?), dual-wielding is a nice touch, smithing gives you a jumpstart on better armour, shouts are ok (find one that actually works on a dragon, but great on bandits), and the signature surprises dotting the landscape (some sadder than others, but they all add to the story).

What I'm not fond of:
1) it's not an open world (1) - cannot kill just anyone you please thanks to the 'essential' tag; MW at least told you that you had doomed yourself if you killed an essential quest-giver, but let you continue on.
2) it's not an open world (2) - cannot collect all of the words of power unless you do all of the faction quests (College of Windhelm, Companions, Thieves Guild, etc.). That means don't bother trying to roleplay, you don't have any choice (and please, do not tell me that the choice is whether you collect them all or not; the shouts are related to the Dragon-born, not her/his occupation.). Or another way of interpreting it, instead of giving you three independent means to complete the main quest, they've been bundled together to reduce the time required to write a proper storyline for each occupation
3) I don't always determine every fight, thanks to those 'finishing moves'. Please, this is supposed to be the apex of an open-ended fantasy role-playing grand epic, not 'Virtua Fighter'. Let me win my own battles myself thank you.
4) if i'm sneaking and i'm not detected, then how the blazes do i get thugs sent after me to 'teach me a lesson'?? I WAS HIDDEN, dammit! Either i can sneak, or i can't, please have the game make up its mind.
5) in Morrowind, i defeated Dagoth Ur. in Oblivion, i helped Martin defeat Mehrunes Dagon. Now, in Skyrim, i'm so pitiful that i need the help of three other heros 'cause i can't go one-on-one myself. How the mighty have fallen .... Next we'll be seeing co-op play .... ye gods
6) it smells too much of a console game; sorry to those PS3 and Xbox players, but games on those platforms 'feel' different. i've played on my share of consoles and sorry, but they do in my opinion. as a PC gamer, it's not a positive vibe.

And last, my 'Opportunities missed' section:

1) What happened to Windhelm? That would make for a wonderful quest, to discover the real truth behind the disaster. A great follow up would be to help re-build the town. There was an old mod from Morrowind which had you raise a city from a single building through several quests. Bethesda could do so much with that ...
2) Jarl Elisif is never made Queen. Why not make a quest to gather the Moot? In Morrowind, on the path to becoming the Neverarine you had to gain support from many factions through several quests. why not a similar objective to help Elisif?
3) A series of quests for the Thalmor. After all, if there are quests for the sleazes infesting the Thieves Guild, why not further the more exquisitely devious aims of the Thalmor? if you get caught, the guards may be far less likely to be lenient, especially in Stormcloak territory ... (yes, thieves do steal and all, but consider the Thieves Guild of Gentleman Jim Brown of Morrowind - remember the Bal Molag quests?)
4) Start a mammoth ranch series of quests
5) Rise to a Jarl's throne and become High King yourself
6) Rebuild Meridia's temple (she's the only Daedric Prince with an actual temple that you'd want to restore. Vaermina? Namira? uh-uh, no thanks ...)
7) As a Khajiit player, go through an additional set of quests to earn your right to enter Skyrim's cities. That would keep true to the lore of Skyrim.

That's all for now. Feedback (not japes) always welcome.

you don't need the staff of worms, if you use any staff that reanimates a fallen enemy or friend they don't turn to ash when there time is up, you just have to hit them with the staff again.

When I started playing Skyrim,I had a nagging feeling that I was in for more Bethesda disappointment. I was right. When I played Daggerfall,I fell through
dungeon floors, got stuck in dungeon walls,Much aggravation!. When I played Morrowind the game froze up or bogged down so bad that it was almost
unplayable, but I made it through. After playing Oblivion,I thought that those bad old days were gone. Man,was I wrong.
Disappointments,I just got done fighting off the Stormcloak attack at Whiterun.decided to go out and loot the fallen. They are all gone! Why?
Where is the Staff of Worms? I really ticks me off that Skyrim got so moralistic about necromancy. If you bring a zombie iback it shouldn't turn
into a pile of ash once it's time runs out. Most of the characters that frequent this game are ugly. When i search the dead, they're eyes are closed.
That pisses me off. That is my main gripe i guess. you can murder a person in a city. Pay a piddly fine and just go. You get stupid missions that
put you into positions where you end up killing giants.( Who seem to harm no one. ) Or,you can work for the thieves guild, the biggest bunch of
jerks I've come across. Stealing ,Fixing books...God knows why! There is no consequence to these actions. And yet the victims eyes are closed.
That is lame. I know that i won't be playing Skyrim much longer unless i see improvements. At least I didn't fall through the floor.

Wait...the OP's biggest complaint is that dead people have closed eyes in Skyrim? Oh good Lord.

That's still not an excuse for Skyrim to be a shallow rpg.

You would be surprised what is on offer for $60.
If you are any good at art you can buy a lot of interesting materials for $60.
Arts and crafts can be sold for profit if your good enough.
I made 3 clay pots last week costing a mere 10 dollars, I could easily make a profit on them.

You can buy a lot of food for $60. for a hiking or canoeing trip.

I can hire a full auto firearm if I want to throw the money away but that is a real blast and again it hones a real life skill.
There is a great drive in movie theater 20 min away that only costs $8. for 3 movies. A great night out with friends.
Some say that friends are the greatest wealth a person can have. I have more fun with friends than I will ever get from video games alone and that is priceless.

There are many things to do with $60. that can improve your quality of life in many ways.
I bought a bicycle for under $40. and that has years of usage.

Whatever keeps you amused I guess, different strokes for different folks.

I too use the movie argument because virtually everyone goes to see a movie once in awhile and pays the 8 bucks, agreeing that it is somewhat reasonable.

Pay $8 for a ticket 1.5 hours of entertainment (I pay more because I get svckered into a large soda but w/e). That means that 8x8 is $64 bucks, or 12 hours of entertainment for more than the price of buying Skyrim. According to steam I have 123 hours in Skyrim, so I've already got my moneys worth, relative to seeing movies, by a factor of 10. Consider also that I paid 10 bucks for PC Morrowind, and received Xbox Morrowind as a gift years ago and between the two of them I'd conservatively estimate 400 hours played. Now are there other things, perhaps as 'worthwile' that you can spend your 60 bucks on? Sure... But in terms of finding a way to entertain yourself I think that a good video game has a ridiculously beneficial quotient.

I can't say anything about Oblivion since I haven't played it. But I agree that Skyrim is disappointing, there isn't any direct challenges, many quests such as the Thieves Guilds and rebellion ones is just stupid, the game seems to more focused on getting people playing caster them melee judging from loot. And worst of all, when you reached a lvl round 35-40 and done mq and done all the dungeons, there isnt anything to do. But there isn't any use really in complaining, because I doubt Bethesda listens and make any changes. They have earned a lot of money on Skyrim and are perfectly happy with that, so I guess they cry all the way to the bank that Skrim is such a failure when it comes to content and bugs.

I'm not disappointed with Skyrim because of the mod support. Thanks to mods the game is enjoyable and I'll surely play it for years (with my slow roleplaying pace). So the game is well worth its cost.

Without mods though I wouldn't want to play the game at all due to excessive hand-holding features.

Sad and untrue.

1. What's a direct challenge?
2. Why do you think the thieves guild and rebellion quests are stupid?
3. There is more than enough to do besides the main quest. Were you expecting infinite content? That's impossible.

Who says that stream-of-consciousness isn't an effective literary style?

People who listened to their HS English teacher who is a failure at life. Moreso I hear you OP the game lacks any real sense of law "oh your murdered threepeople but are the Thane even though one of the peopled you murdered was also a Thane"....no prob but next time its to jail" where you will not be penalized as hard as in any other TESV game....pretty fail. Being a law abiding citizen in Skyrim is boring in the previous titles it was a real challenge.

Oblivion is better. As is Morrowind. As is Daggerfall.
Indeed.

For me, it's disappointing as a TES game, but by no means a bad game by itself. Definitely more than worth the money.

1. What's a direct challenge?

A direct challenge is in one way that the game should be more challenging playing on the highest gameplay, and it isn't. If you play a nord with 2 hander, and have filled up the perks 2 hander and heavy armor, there is zero difference in combat compared with the easiest one.

2. Why do you think the thieves guild and rebellion quests are stupid? Tg quests should be a challenge, and they aren't, and the rebellionquests, well how exciting and challening is it to run into a fort, kill everyone you see and then you are done? And why isn't there a quest to destroy the TG? To me they are just a bunch of losers hanging around in the sewers.

3. There is more than enough to do besides the main quest. Were you expecting infinite content? That's impossible. No there isn't, if you play alot like I do, you can easily clear all dungeon etc pretty quick. As I said, my nord is lvl 35 and I have done all dungeons, ruins etc. I still can't understand how they could release a game where thisn't enough quest to last up to endlvl

So once again, this is a failure, Bethesda could have made this game really interesting, but choose not to.

Sounds like you play the damn game too often. Your mad because you burnt yourself out on Skyrim. Don't blame Bethesda because there's not more for you to do. You did it all.

Once the expansion is released you'll be back on here complaining that there wasn't enough content because you'll power house through it. People like you will never be satisfied. I played Skyrim a lot too and it took me awhile to find every location. You sound spoiled.

I haven't played as a two-handed character so I can't really comment on the challenge provided for that playstyle, but I can say that I have had no problems with the game being too easy or too difficult with any of my other characters (five in total). I suppose you've already tried the master difficulty setting?

Regarding the quests, I really feel that you're expecting too much from Bethesda. Skyrim is just a game after all. I can't think of any other games that provide the options you're looking for either. Do you have any examples of games that you think are better than Skyrim?

Finally, my main character is only level 51 and my other four characters are around 20-25 and I still haven't seen everything this game has to offer. I don't see how you can have finished everything in the game and still be at level 35. It seems like you just rushed though everything without stopping to smell the roses. Again, you can't blame Bethesda for that as it's your own fault. And to say that they 'chose' not to make the game interesting is riduculous. It's in everyone's best interests that they do so, and they did.

I have seen 3D. I appreciate the gimmicky draw of it. It rarely serves any kind of artistic purpose, which is necessary for it to survive as a main medium of artistry.

3D has come into fashion twice before this. Both times before, it was going to "revolutionize" film and gaming. It didn't. It won't.

People who listened to their HS English teacher who is a failure at life. See? Stream-of-consciousness is awesome! You can just write whatever then the bird jumps over the dying dying dying what happened to the teachers? Over and over the sounds of my breathing the dragons the darkness the endless night night so black. Why must I be haunted by these dreams of never-ending opened eyes and not-Morrowinds filled with not-bathrooms? When can it end? Why must the jolly jingle jangle through the rabbit hole?
