Doctor Who Thread!

Watching 2 and 3 was wonderful. While I enjoyed The Five Doctors it was more for the indulgence in nostalgia rather than the story. With four Doctors and a gaggle of companions there were just too many people to make the episode work - whereas The Three Doctors gave us a great dynamic.

You might like the two doctors then (Colin Baker and Troughton, with Jamie as Troughton's assistant). IIRC the focus was on Colin, with Pat's doctor reacting similiar to Colin as he did with Jon...

Though overall the Davis era stories were average at best, I do believe that by far his best episode was "Dalek". I think that had Christopher Eccleston stayed on, he would have no doubt did a much better job than David Tennant(and yes Tennant is a decent actor, but the character he portrayed was uninspired at best) did.

What? What about Victory of the Daleks? Those two episodes have been the best.

Victory of the Daleks was just a way of Moffat saying "dalek going back to the good ol days". I like the new daleks, but the story was pathetic at best.

Churchill didnt really play a vital role, and the only characters mentioned were Churchy, and the andriod bloke. You had the woman crying in the background, and i was expecting Amy to comfort her, ro shed a little light on her background, but no.

The cyberman episode looks promising, and the dreamlord from the last episode reminded me of the valeyard aswell, i hope they reveal more of the dark side to the doctor, seeing in the reflection on the console for a brief second was freaky.

The story could have used a little work, but its good to see dalek made andriods again (they made an andriod (first) doctor back in the 60's "The Chase" serial, although it too is often seen as "needing some work".

I loved The Chase, my dad (hes the number 1 who fan) had this on vhs and i watched it as a kid (what were the dodecahedrol dalek things called?).
Yeah i liked the andriod idea, the daleks up to their cheeky little tricks once more. But the method of stopping him from blowing was... kinda weak.

The next few episodes look cool, and if you dont know. James Cordon aka "Smithy" form Gavin and Stacy is in a later episode.

The Dream Lord was a better version of Q from Star Trek, for my money. Someone on another forum described him as 'a malevolent Ian Hislop'.

Aside from having the potential of either making an inclusion of a bunker shootout between the Royal Marines and the "Ironsides" or the inclusion of some space FW-109's for an even better homage to the Battle of Britain(mind you Danny Boy and company did well). Also, the reference to "Where Eagles Dare" was fantastic, and "Spitfires in Space" made the episode by far.

Also, why does the female airman need a background story(aside from the fact that her man was shot down over the Channel, there seems little reason to get into her back story).

Ahah, I'm not the only one.

I did like the Dalek episode, not for the story but purely for A NEW DA-LEK PARA-DIGM!

I've been a huge Doctor Who fan for many years. Like many DW fans, my favorite Doctor is the one the I first watched. In my case that is Tom Baker (number 4). I was lucky enough to meet him and Sophie Aldred at a DW con many years ago in Baltimore, MD. This was around the time when Scifi channel was just starting. I was in a DW fan club at the time and had pre-ordered my ticket for the con. The ticket had a stamp on the back that granted the holder to a small tea and cake party after the Q&A portion of the day. I don't consider myself very tall, only 5,9". Yet I was amazed at how short Sophie was. In the 7th Doctor episodes she seems about the same height as Sylvester McCoy. So he must be rather short as well.

I try to watch the newer DW episodes when ever possible. However, my job has a lot of travel and I spend most nights in a hotel. The hotels t.v channels don't always include BBC America.

Aww, you got to meet Ace! :sadvaultboy:

I did always assume she was quite tall, actually. Mccoy must be tiny then!

I just finished watching Children of Earth. At first I really enjoyed it and wondered why so many people didn't like it . . . and then I got to the end.

Spoiler
I am not sorry to say that having the protagonist kill his grandson while the kid's mother watches is too much for me. And just to twist that knife a bit more Jack is willing to go ahead with this horrendous act but an episode before when Ianto is threatened Jack capitulates to the 456 in a heartbeat.

For me that not only makes the end (and Jack itself) even more repugnant but it cheapens what should be a poignant ending for Ianto.

Even ignoring Children of Earth I think Torchwood killed the Jack Harkness character. Torchwood's moody, secretive, team leader just wasn't as fun as the flirty, upbeat, conman of Doctor Who. However I did really enjoy the second season and I would have liked the show to continue like that. Instead I'm now glad that Torchwood's forth season has stalled and I'm hoping that he doesn't re-appear on Doctor Who again.

I think we've seen the end of anybody from the last four years. Moffat's characters seem much more... balanced. Less of the unfeeling nymphomaniac cockneys that plagued RTD's Doctor Who.

Part of the problem with the Davis series, was that he was trying to implant social messages into it. Now, over time Doctor Who has been a vehicle for social movements(everything from anti-fascism(Daleks), to saving the environment(Jon Pertwee era).

Victory of the Daleks? That's the worst episode we've had in a while. It was horribly cheesy.

Victory of the Daleks wasn't terrible, I liked how the Daleks were continued in a way that wasn't just one time travelled and the Dalek threat still continues. Also I liked some of the dialogue between the Daleks and the doctor.

There are still messages in Moffat's stories, perhaps they're more subtle. The Starship UK, where everyone votes for the lesser of two evils and then opts to forget about it? A world where people choose to ignore the enormous suffering upon which their society is built, because the alternative is too depressing and terrifying? COME ON

Yeah, but at least he isn't making every other character a homosixual and calling Christmas a pagan sun festival.

No the worst episode was the beast below. I didnt like the ye olde england on a spaceship. And the space whale "volunteering", the doctors actions were a little arrogant, needs to loosen up :slap:

Yeah i didnt like that episode, but its great that the daleks arent little creatures hiding in hte dark anymore, hopefully there're fleshed out into a big empire once more.

Tonights was a good episode
Why is it that the DR can't get assistants like the geologist normally. People who are actually useful? Guess she isn't sixy enough. Personally I see a lot of continuity between Davies and Moffat (not surprising since Moffat was one of the main writers in the Davies days). Matt Damon seems ok as the Dr, not as good as Tennant IMO but to be fair to him its only halfway through a series.
