Doom 4 Speculation Thread

Doom 4: Speculations & Suggestions Thread #1

Note: This thread is for discussing what you think Doom 4 will be like, will feature, etc.

What we know so far: Doom 4 will NOT be a sequel to the 2004 game Doom 3. It will NOT be a reboot either however, simply another chapter in the Doom legacy. It will be powered by the id Tech 5 engine, the same as the upcoming game Rage (so we can expect improved graphics, improved movement, etc.).

More information will be added to this thread or any future threads as more information on Doom 4 is released.

Another note: Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software announced back in '09 that news of Doom 4 will not be announced till Quakecon 2010, which will take place between August 12th-15th of this year. So till then, let's pump out what we want to see in Doom 4 so that the devs can get to know what we expect to see from them in August!
Unfortunately even though promised last year we'd get information at this year's Quakecon, any news about Doom 4 has been put on hiatus. Hopefully this extra time means a better Doom 4 then.

Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth

Does this mean we're leaving Red Faction Mars and heading back to Earth (like in Doom II)? Could explain why Beth decided to republish Doom II to the Xbox Marketplace.
I guess Fallout isn't going to be the only game setting the world on fire. Bwahahahahaha! :flamethrower:

I'm actually more interested in seeing Doom4 on IDTech5 than Rage. Rage is pretty but its too similar to Borderlands in setting and gameplay options (desert, driving, shooting bandits). It would be cool to fight your way thru a huge demon/alien dimension with all sorts of disturbing stuff to encounter. But if Doom4 is a corridor shooter in the dark with a 4in diameter flashlight beam there's going to be trouble. :)

Either more ambient lighting, or flashlight equipped weapons. Don't make us do it... :stare: ...again.

Aside from the updated graphics and mechanics and physics and antibiotics and medulla oblongata's and yadda-yadda-yadda..

There should be plenty of gore, and I think it should be arcade style, like the old ones. And please no cell-shading.. It seems to have
come in fashion these days..

Oh yes and.... Multiplayer!! :twirl:

I agree. With the vehicle combat and how the desert looked in the trailer, it simply looked like a polished Borderlands.
Oh, and Doom 4 is supposed to have better graphics, just at a lower framerate (30 frames per second, which is more than enough).

@Yasgur- OH my gosh, I cannot agree with you more! That was so annoying that I couldn't freaking attach my flashlight to my weapon in Doom 3! I don't care if they include attachments like an M203 grenade launcher, and I have to sacrifice that for the flashlight. Just as long as it attaches to my weapons.

By cell-shading you mean the style of artwork that Borderlands had that was kind of cartoonish, right? Or is cell-shading [or at least the kind you're talking about] a different type of artwork/shading?

And yes, there needs to be tons of gore. I want Left 4 Dead to look like a children's game!*

Gameplay style should be closed to older dooms, atleast what some news said when the first news about doom 4 came. :)

Hopefully the artistic style would be also closed to old dooms, as those monsters look even now days, very good. Unique, believable, scary.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the enemies back from Doom 3 personally. I thought they were a bit more believable and scary than the Doom I and Doom II enemies. But that's just me.

I would like to see gameplay a bit more like the originals.

Doom 2 is my favorite. I can't live without the Super Shotgun. Literally. Those demons hurt!

I want to see Doom 4 go back to its roots. None of this "scary pre-scripted event" stuff that Doom 3 gave us. I want to run, gun, chew bubblegum and kick ass! Just like Doom and Doom 2. I want to FEEL the heat of my chaingun through the screen. This isn't about the enemies being scary, and it shouldn't be. This is about the enemies being afraid of Doomguy, 'cause hes about to kick their asses!

I really like the whole demonic-bio-mechanoid theme. Its a Doom trademark and very open for design options and creativity. Bring it on.

Cherubs scared the hell out of me, so did mancubus and Hell Knights. But i'd like to see the demons return to their animalistic route. Now that I think of it, DOOM 3 monsters have a heavy QUAKE influence. And i'm talking old school quake.

Im talking about the one in Borderlands.

But now that you mention it, Im confused on what cell-shading actually is...

Is it the look of Borderlands? Or the look of TF2?

As long as it has a Linux installer like most Id games do, I'll buy it.

I hope that if this one's in earth, they bring back the original shotgun from Doom 1, even if it's just as an easter egg. Because dammit, they still have that shotgun in the display case of the id software office's lobby, and they can 3D scan it again if they feel like it.

I'm a total Doom nerd so this information I've stored photographically.

Also, I hope terribly that they bring back some models that look like the original Doom sprites. Maybe they aren't really all that scary anymore, but damn, those sprites bring back happy childhood memories. I've been playing Doom since I was at least four years old. Seriously, the Revenant in Doom 3 made me happy just by seeing the model be so deliciously similar to the original sprite. But the Barons of Hell were a major disappointment, and so was the Cyberdemon. IT'S ONLY ONE CYBORG LEG, DAMMIT. :P

I hope it'll be a remake of Doom 2, with Demons invading Earth in 1800P HD awesomeness! And with CO-OP! And with kick ass original rock music!

I love DOOM 3. Never played one or two. I hope four is just as good as three. I know that three kind of "restarted" the series. Is DOOM 4 basically gonna be a direct sequel of DOOM 3?

1. Speed Metal
2. Hordes of demons
3. Awesome shotguns and chainsaws
4. Fast-paced non-stop action.

This would be the ideal DOOM 4. The most important thing would be memorable levels, DOOM 1 & 2 had such great levels.

If they do a remix of the E1M1 song from DOOM 1 (I know the official title is "At Doom's Gate") I'd be such a happy camper my face would explode. You know, something like... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlDUOPQOzp4.

EDIT: Also needs to be a remix of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlWDSvNSzlA&feature=related, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVRbEvPvF7A&feature=related, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5KVMnS9zgY&feature=related. Oh, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qURei6svd90.

Doom 4, I think, might be a sequel to Doom 2. It could very well be on Earth.

Also, I think that it will be more open world instead of closed corridors - this is how Doom 2 was. There will be larger levels, more monsters and plenty of carnage.

It will not be cell-shaded. As for what the monsters might look like, I am not entirely sure what to expect. Will they be an offshoot of Doom 3 monsters or a complete redesign? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

For me, as long as its classic DOOM gameplay I will be pleased, gore, idiot demons/zombies walking into your bullets, amazing music and ok graphics will pass with me. Now that I know DOOM 4 is probably in the works for real, then Im going to have to hook up my Super Nintendo and crank out some old school DOOM. What a blast that used to be. One of the first games I ever played, and still enjoy it

Oh man!! I hope they make it exactly like the Movie! They should even get The Rock to be the main villain, but in his fully mutated form!! That would be :tops:

Okay I couldn’t even keep a straight face just typing that.

Seriously though I have loved Doom since day one. There was lots of action but also puzzles and lots of hidden areas. I would like to see the same difficulty slider from the originals (Not too Rough, Hurt Me Plenty, Nightmare) as well as one for the lighting (Afraid of the Dark, Flashlights are my Friend, Pitch [censored] Black) but I agree that in darkened areas the ability to attach a flashlight to your weapon is a must, that or have the light attached to your helmet. I also want the score board at the end of each level giving you the percentages of enemies killed and secrets found, there are a lot more categories that could be added to this. I kind of liked the way they used the PDA in 3, but the color coded key cards would still be classic. If they decide to bring back the Berserk Pack (and they should :stare:!) it needs to actually be made into something useful, not just have one in the whole game at a point where you’re already armed to the teeth. A few thing that sound cool at first but as I think about them I’m not sure they really belong in a Doom game: Dual Wielding weapons independently fired, Night-Vision goggles, Mental Breakdowns (audio/visual hallucinations occur when you’re constantly retreating or trying to “play it safe” but not when you’re running and gunning)
