Empire or Stormcloak

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 8:55 am

Seeing as the thread on Rogvirs execution have been close to going off topic about the Empire vs the Stormcloaks I think we can move that discussion here.

So, who do you support in the Civil War and why?

Empire because they're not whiny nords.
I have more in-depth reasoning, but I'm lazy right now.

Stormcloaks. Because the Empire is the Thalmor's [censored]. Plus, the Empire is a bunch of milk drinkers.

I did several playthoughs where I supported the Stormcloaks, but honestly, I got tired of being forced to betray one of the few characters in the game that bent over backwards to be nice to me, so now my Nord hero is a man of the people and refuses to be Ulfric's puppet. I still kill Imperial/Thalmor patrols wherever I find them, but Galmar can kiss my ass if he thinks I'm swearing his oath.

If 1.7 comes with an option to talk Balgruuf into accepting voluntary exile or some other non-asshat choice, then I may reconsider.

The Thalmor want Ulfric to win, because it weakens the Empire and that makes it easier for the Thalmor.

i agree with the storm cloaks up and till you look closer and realise there a bunch of bigots, the empire might be whipped without a septim in charge but at least they dont have a problem with elves, argonians, khajiit and orcs. they dont even seem to be be overly keen on the other humans

Did you read the dossier on Ulfric?

A Stormcloak victory is also to be avoided, however, so even indirect aid to the Stormcloaks must be carefully managed.

I'd support the Empire, many people in game say how Skyrim needs the support the Empire provides. Although it is falling apart, it could have regrouped and got stronger if not for the Stormcloaks starting a civil war. All they want is to worship Talos, and the Empire seems to want to do that to, they just can't due to the Thalmor.
When you finish with the empire side Tullius even says how he doesn't think the peace with the Thalmor will last for long.

Could you imagine how if instead of fighting the Empire the Stormcloaks sided with them?
They would be able to fight back the Thalmor and everyone would win.

Ah, touche mate. I guess I didn't remember it correctly, read it a while back, thanks. Still though, my point stands, a united Empire > a divided one. Against the Thalmor anyway.

Precisely. The Empire didn't want to banish the worship of Talos, they did it so their entire Empire wasn't destroyed. Once the Thalmor are taken care of and the worship of Talos is no longer banned, they'd have no need of Stormcloaks, would they? Besides the Skyrim for the nords bit which I think is a tad racist.

I see the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, but after six characters of mine joined the Empire, I joined the Stormcloaks with my most recent one and I think they have the right of it. I mean, just think about what Wulf said in Morrowind, and with the worship of Talos outlawed, it seems like the Stormcloaks should win.

Stormcloaks because I am a follower of Talos and I wear my amulet of Talos proudly and no milk drinker in a dress is going to tell me to hide it because a pointy eared elf told them to.

As much as I despise Ulfric, I sided with the Stormcloaks. In the end, I realized the empire has changed since Oblivion, and while I respect Mede II, I think he is a terrible emperor. I also don't want the Thalmor in Skyrim or at least not to have influence there. But take my word, that if the opportunity to Kill Ulfric Stormcloak, I would gladly take it. After researching, I learned that while he may not have murdered the high king, that action was unnecessary. After meeting Torygg in a certain area, I realized that Ulfric's priority is to become High King, while getting rid of the Thalmor is secondary.

Not sure myself, but I think I'm leaning toward the Empire. As a Breton, my character believes in some form of democracy. Specifically, a province can decide how to rule itself for the most part, and the Empire acts as a medium for foreign relations and trade, as well as a strong-arm to protect and keep peace between nations.

In these less-than-ideal times, Skyrim can't fight both the Empire and the Thalmor. The Empire needs reform, but it needs to wait until the combined forces of the Stormcloaks and the Empire take down the Thalmor.

Isn't this what Wulf - AKA Tiber Septim - said in Morrowind? How do supporters of the Empire shoot this down?

Spoiler
"The Emperor is getting old. Don't know how much longer he'll hang on. So is the whole Empire, for that matter. Getting old, that is. The Emperor and the legions have held the Empire together for hundreds of years. It's been a good thing, by and large. But maybe it's time for a change. Time for something young and new. What? No idea. Because I'm old. Old dog doesn't get new ideas. But maybe young folks like you should try some new ideas. I don't know. Could be messy. But change is never pretty."

I usually side with the Stormcloaks if I'm playing as a Nord and as any other race I side with the Empire.
