Good news but man, I gotta say I find it rather disrespectful to label it Bethesdas new game. It's Obsidian that's actually developing it for crying out loud. Bad magazine, bad!

It looks like any old part of the capitol wasteland with a vegas sign tossed in... at any rate, the number on the vault suit doesn't appear to be 101, It looks like 117.

Well, the other element of that supposed leak that I haven't heard anybody mention, is that it pretty much reads as an itemized list of all the most popular suggestions that have come up on both the bsoft and obsid boards in regards to fo:nv. It's just too perfect. Next thing, somebody will leak that not only are santa clause and the easter bunny real, but a new flying car has been developed that runs on fairy dust and positive thinking, and whose exhaust cures cancer. Okay, maybe I'm exagerating a wee bit, but you get the idea.

Good point, it does seem a bit like someone has been reading these threads and then just threw together a piece about many of the wished for ideas being in NV.

Another thing is the actual viability of vehicles. The gamebryo engine just doesn't seem capable of vehicles, heck it only just managed horses. Unless they've done some severe recoding to the engine (Unlikely in the time they've had) then we won't be seeing vehicles....or at least ones that don't bounce through the air and sit on a wierd axis when going up or down a hill.

Is that screenshot up there actually from NV? It looks like a Fallout 3 mod, or at least a photoshopped screenshot with the Vegas sign popped in.

Photoshopped Fallout 3 screen most likely, or so some forumites say here and elsewhere. Almost fooled me, though - with a shock.

Exactly what it is.

For the topic: I agree, I think it's a disservice to Obsidian to label it as "Bethesda's new post-apocalyptic RPG". It's like labeling MW2 as "developed by Activision" instead of Infinity Ward.

At least properly confer recognition where it's deserved.

No. It's like saying "Activision's WM2." There a difference between non-specific phrasing and phrasing that actively misrepresents the nature of an organization's involvement with a title.

Oops...I meant the Gamebryo engine as it is coded for Fallout 3/Oblivion. Since Obsidian are using the same variation of the engine, I doubt they have had time nor opportunity to recode to the point where vehicles are no longer clumsy and eventually annoying.

The games linked were coded from the ground up to be racing games.

It's common for a game to be attributed to its publisher particularly if the publisher sought out a developer to make a game rather than a developer shopping a game around to publishers. I dislike this as well, but I think you're incorrect to call this "disrespectful."

Have you read the original GameInformer preview of TES IV? It's pretty much an itemized list of common forum requests for a new Elder Scrolls game. :)

And yet all of them are still bargin bin quality, so I can't imagine the engine was doing them any favors even with the code being totally dedicated to driving.

It's just rumours so far, and regarded to be fake as of now. However, the official Xbox magazine will have an article on New Vegas next month, so that will probably be the official unveiling.

Hmm... yeah, but bethesda also had significantly more time to make the game, thereby making it more plausible. Sure fo:nv isn't going to go through a top to bottom overhaul of it's engine, but it's still an rpg with all the inherent genre speed bumps. Writing all the dialogue, scripting all the quests and convos, building out the free roaming world, taking the time to create all the complex design docs before the game can even budge an inch in developement. All of those things add up to a lot of develop time, and fo:nv would already have a tight development schedule while just doing the bare minimum.

Et tu?

Come on now, but this argument really strikes me as petty. I'm a lot more interested in what the article might say than a slip up as meaningless as that.

[attempting a topic change]

About vehicles - I wonder if this will replace fast travel between towns? Probably not, but I really hated how Easy fast travel made the game and used a mod to disable it. The wasteland seemed so much more realistic to me when I had to hoof it everywhere, and couldn't cheat my way home (my personal view only). I think Vehicles will do alot for folks like me in not even needing to fast travel when real vehicles are around :)

I love the rumor about trading parts, and this brings way back into the 1980's when we used to play Car Wars. In that old board game you outfitted your vehicles with different engines, weapons, tires, etc and that had effects on what the vehicle could do/how powerful it was. It was a great game for its day, and the rumor about vehicles that you can improve is exciting! I hope they go a ways with this, and allow weapons to be purchased/mounted on them.

I also wonder, with vehicles, if there will be any Quests/missions that center on them. I can just imagine an urgent mission given to me in which critical supplies were stolen and are now being raced-out of New Vegas via train - the only hope the player having being to get in a car, chase down the train and stop it (violently or otherwise). Mmmmm.

I seem to remember there was something about traintravel in VB (might be wrong, though).

There could be a questline in which you help a certain group to assemble the train route between settlements for fasttravel purposes. Settlements only, everywhere else you'd have to walk.

In relation to the recent rumours that there were gonna be drivable vehicles in the game, someone (either here or on the Obsidian boards) pointed to a forum post by JE Sawyer where he mentioned he was not crazy about usable vehicles in Fallout. Of course, he could have changed his mind, but... I agree with that though, I'd rather not see the player get his hands on working vehicles.

If memory serves, there was indeed a railroad included somehow in Van Buren though I can't remember the details of how it worked at the moment. It was driven by coal I believe. I think the inhabitants of the wasteland trying to get trade and stuff going via railroads is pretty plausible if coal can be found easily. It's a pretty cool idea. Not sure if New Vegas will fit the scope of it though, depending on how large the gameplay area is (Van Buren stretched further across the US since it made use of the old Fallout world map travel).

I always played around with the thought that adding a random encounter mechanic to "fast travel" would solve the (lack of) difficulty. The encounter level/difficulty would scale depending on the PC's level and some choices made in quests throughout the game.

You're correct, I even expressed the wish to see this added as a "fast travel substitute" in NV. IIRC, one had to repair the old lines first before they could be used.

Well reguardles of all the rumors out there. I do think that Las Vegas is a grat settig for a Fallout game. Im thinking a New Reno version to it. And i whould prefer to skip the fast traveling all together. I think that fast traveling minemizes the game so mutch that it feels tiny even with 50 square miles to play with. I like to just walk around and se what i find, who i find and whare i end up in. Its always fun to discover a big house to run around in and search for usable stuff in every form thay may apear. I know alot of peopel collect varius junk or diferent forms. Anyway Having a car insted of fast traveling whould be alot better to me. Besids thay have already made it official in Fallout 2 that there was cars in the game. Although the engine used energy weapon ammo and reduced the time used to traveling. Besids im prety sure that a handy and clever character could manage to re-build a cars engine in one way or another. I mean if thay can build power armors and energy weapons, vertibird and all other stuff thay build, re-build or built more of after the war then im prety sure thay can manage to build a new workin engine for a car. Besids a car whould aso enable the player to use the trunk of it to store more stuff. So i say skip the fast traveling completly. It takes alot of fun out of the game anyway. And put in a carof some sort in the game insted. And finaly Las Vegas have Area 51 that i think is perfect from a story perspective. Simular to the military base in Fallout 1 or an enclave base like that oil rig in fallou 2. Anyway what do you peopel think Area 51 whould be used for pre-war and what whold it be used for on the curently being used for after the war? It have alot of potential.
