Forum Update Discussion

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:26 pm

My eyes aren't hurt by this, I'm just having a lot of trouble navigating and browsing topics. I liked the simplicity of the old forum, this is just too much of a change for me.

Seconded big time.

If too many dislike this new layout, they should bring it back the way it was :stare:

Gstaff, are the stars and ranks going to be changed to what they were before? There are a lot of people griping about that (including me). :P

What's your gripe specifically? That they're different? Too many? Need new titles?

All stuff we can look into. We have no problems with adapting to feedback (though it might take time). Somethings are different for reason. There's actually a reason we have more ranks now -- it tackles some other issues admin/moderators dealt with in the forums -- but that doesn't mean we can't look into it.

Not really an option...we had to make an upgrade. And as more and more titles get added to the forums (we added support for two games, Brink and RAGE today), the single page layout couldn't work forever.

Okay. Just out of curiosity, is there one board you think looks the best? For me, there's backgrounds I like more than others, but we tried to find ones that keep things readable. Granted, community discussion didn't get a specialized backrground. After feedback from the moderators, we added the grey background to make things easier on the eyes (it was all black previously).

If it was the actual gray surrounding, which is a very light gray, with a dark font color, it would be perfect. Dark background with light fonts generally cause people much more trouble than than the other way around. Like this post box is absolute terror on my eyes when I am not using Opera's high-contrast mode (pure black background with pure white font)

Everyone wants it the way it was before. The old stars and the same number for each rank.

Layman - 0 posts
Novice - 10 posts
Initiate - 50 posts
Acolyte - 100 posts
Adept - 200 posts
Curate - 400 posts (1 star)
Disciple - 1,000 posts (2 gold stars)
Diviner - 2,000 posts (3 gold stars)
Master - 5,000 posts (4 gold stars)
Patriarch - 10,000 posts (5 gold stars)
Archpatriarch - 30,000 posts (6 gold stars)

We want the old star as well. The bigger star. Thanks Gstaff. :)

For me personally, the Morrowind general discussion looks great. Easy on the eyes, and I love the background color mixed with the overlapping color.

I think the general gripe about the stars is that people who frequent these boards often and have accumulated a high post count thus netting them stars, do not feel like they "earned" it anymore since everyone has at least 1 star now.
Personally, I like the old system of 1k post - 2 stars, and so on from that point.

ARGH! Change is bad! :aaah:

On a more serious note, this doesn't appear to support wide-screen monitors (which are nearly more common than standard 12:10 these days).

Navigation isn't intuitive anymore. I only found Community Discussion 'cause I went to the FO3 forum. CD, IMHFO, is worthy of it's own link on the main page. Heck, I remember the days when I used to silently mock users who were most active in CD....now I am one.

Color scheme doesn't bother me much, but I do miss my samurai red/black theme that I loved.

Gstaff, always nice to see you working hard to make things better for us. Grain of salt and a pinch for luck, pal.

Yes i got to agree with this 100% why not go back to the old ranking system ?

There were actually some rank changes made prior to the forum launch...based on some issues we were experiencing.

But did anyone have that many stars before?? :)

The number of stars now is hugely different than what it was prior to this recent overhaul, if that's what you're asking. Quite a few members had over 20k post giving them the max number of stars.

Well, at least the post editor's been fixed :) So is the E-Mail notification feature ( We now seem to get one for each new post made ). On a completely unrelated note, AutoPager's stopped working on the new forum. Let's hope someone fixes that soon.

My gripes:

1. Where has the link bar from the top gone, you know the one that had a link to the Beth Blog, ES and Fallout 3 homepages and the bethesda home page. I dont want to clutter up my favorites with more links.

2. The colours are a bit strong...but thats nothing new.

3. Everyone and their dog has stars now, i liked it better before, a star actually meant something, and just a quick glance could tell you how forum going the person was. Now you have to read the title to tell the difference, between disciple to master, and master to Patriarch the amount of stars is hardly noticable. Too many stars, make them something worth having again, not just a silly tack on.

4. Im a little unhappy how if you go to the ES forums, you no longer can see the lastest topic in each subform, i use to jump around between morrowind/oblvion and past games to the newest topics, but thats quite hard to tell now unless you actually go into the oblivion sub forum, then you can see the latest topcis for each lot (general spoilers, CS, hardware etc) but then you have to navigate out again if i want ot vist the morrowind forums. I know it looks less cluttery, but i mis having all the info on 1 page that i could just scroll and up and down.

That was based on feedback. We'll continue to work on improving things.

Ah, thankyou  The grey text makes quite the difference, a lot easier to read now. The white of posted links or user names are still hard to look at but it's not as bad because I don't linger on them for long.

For the forums themselves ( Come to think of it, I didn't realize that it worked with the messenger too ).

Gripe: The current page indicator is too feeble - One has to look twice ( or more ) to see which page they are viewing.

Since GStaff appears to be online at the moment, I'd like to just take a brief moment and urge him to read through the forum skins thread.

While the text color change was a step in the right direction, I still can't read the forums without nosquint.

I'd like a color scheme with a primary focus on readability. "Fancy" isn't much good to me if I have to squint.

But did anyone have that many stars before?? :)

I will gladly trade every single one in if it means I can have my old interface back :(

I'll be a noober Newb for all eternity if I can just have the option for the old interface..

The new content is great, luv it, sure, yeah. But I can't handle the interface.

I'll check back after the weekend, see if it feels any better then ..

I'm really burned by it :( :( :(

Is anyone else having issues with uploading their personal photo ? The upload fails every time I try. The file is valid in every way.

Unfortunately, not an option. Nick and I (and the moderators) will work on a new forum FAQ that answers some questions about the new forums. It will include the fact that we needed to do a forum upgrade. We tried imported the old look/skins and that caused a great deal of issues.
