Helping Mr. House

Post » Wed Mar 02, 2011 8:11 am

This is getting way too long so I'll only reply to a couple of these.

I've never heard Mr. House ever say or imply that he's only getting money to hire people or machinery. Mr. House isn't ever portrayed as wanting to use what the NCR has. He had been preparing before the bombs fell. I'm very curious where you're getting these ideas that House has this big scheme involving lobbying and taking over the NCR industrial base and educational system, let alone become a "power player" in Shady Sands. It seems like you're making alot of assumptions from nowhere.

What do you think he wants the caps for? His stated goal is recover the technical progress mankind has lost due to the Great War then surpassing it by developing new technologies. He wants colonies on other planets within a century. In 2081, House has no industrial base, a limited amount of stockpiled construction materiel, and a bunch of security bots. He has a number of human employees, but they are busy generating his income and aren't trained in technical skills anyhow. Even before the War, Southern Nevada had little industry. On the plus side, he has a ready source of hydroelectric power. There is the Courier, but House has a full plate of tasks for him/her already. The purpose of New Vegas is to generate the income he needs to build or renovate the industrial base that will make his dream happen. The equipment and skilled people he will need to proceed are currently only available in the NCR. He's too prideful to join the NCR and manipulate the government from inside to help him, so he is going to have to buy what he needs.....which is where New Vegas comes in. He spent nearly a million caps to get the Platinum chip back, it's going to take far more to build a industrial base capable of doing what he wants out of close to nothing, not to mention hire and/or train the scientists and technicians he will need. And we're not even getting into the logistics that make a industrial society possible, such as mines, transportation infrastructure, ect that will also be needed to get this project to completion. House's plan is extremely ambitious, it is going to require immense amounts of caps and thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands of people and the re-creation of numerous industries. He may well have stockpiles of critical machines and production lines, but not nearly enough to carry through.

You're becoming a bit contradictive. You're trying to say that there's one chem dealer and no gangs, but you've previously called it a warzone and in this paragraph you change from one chem dealer to multiple. You're becoming confusing.

The game shows us only one chem dealer in all Freeside, which implies to me that chems aren't as big a problem in Freeside as you've been saying it is. Even going by the assumption that there are lots more people in Freeside than the game shows...due to game engine restraints...a single dealer with no gang affiliation means there is no organized chem ring in Freeside, which means there isn't a large amount of money in it. One, or a handful of chem dealers can be dealt with quite easily.

Mr. House and Pacer unite? The only person Pacer listens to is the King.

Yes, Pacer is totally loyal to the King. As the King's main lieutenant his advice is respected so if House could convince Pacer that an alliance with House would make the Kings and the King himself more powerful, it could help sway the King House's way. Since Pacer already hates the NCR, half the battle is won.

He doesn't bother securing Freeside, because He knows when the NCR is defeated, they'll withdraw from the region. It would have been a waste of time and resources. That doesn't seem like short-sightedness.

In the short term, he does not want the NCR getting a foothold in Freeside. In the long term, he wants the FoTA and thier subversive ideals sent packing, and the area safe for whatever re-development projects he has planned for it. By enlisting the Kings, he could have accomplished the former and be well on the way to the latter before the Courier appears to execute his plan to boot the NCR out. [

First of all I agree that House mishandles the Kings, if it were possible I would go about it a different way. It's not, no RPG is unlimited and there's no option to debate the matter unfortunately.
What do you think he wants the caps for? His stated goal is recover the technical progress mankind has lost due to the Great War then surpassing it by developing new technologies. I think you underestimate the NCR. I think they're corrupt and inept but they're not that slow. If House tried to break into the NCR he'd be shut out and locked down. More likely actually they'd let him in then annex Vegas from beneath him. Come on you must know how it works. He'd be forced to spend inordinate amounts of time and money on wooing the people (otherwise they'd be turned against the corrupt businessman) when it could instead be spent on his vision.

What's more you start making progress people come to you. He doesn't need to win the NCR over to gain access to their resources. Engineers and scientists don't change. Not the good ones. You build an empire they'll come sniffing out of curiosity if nothing else. House only needs to start the ground work, once they hear of a factory being built I would bet my life on the best at least being interested, if not high tailing it over there right away, especially with House running it, if I heard he was in charge of a new factory I'd be goddamned interested, that's for sure.

One of the endings shows Mormon Fort being overrun by druggies. It's a massive problem and it's endemic. Look at real Vegas now, it's the same story, the people who lose it all turn to drugs and [censored]s. Big surprise.
It's a problem which could be solved in short, but never permanently, not without a police state which is the antithesis of House's ideals.

Since Pacer already hates the NCR, half the battle is won.

Again, politics. Like I said, I think House screwed up a big opportunity.

However, the Kings are lazy gangsters. They own Freeside and they know it. The King is a generally good guy, despite being the head gangster. He's still not doing much though, kicking back and liking his music. He doesn't even know what his people are up to.

In the short term, he does not want the NCR getting a foothold in Freeside. Unlikely, encouraging war between the NCR and Kings would NOT be good for House, not until the Courier's arrival anyway. He needs the NCR draining itself, not taking Freeside over. He needs the Kings to stop them but not violently.
Like I said I think House went about it entirely wrong, though I think he likely had bigger concerns. Nonetheless I think you put way too much idealism in the King...

Does it matter who is bad or good. We play the game how we want, if you do as House says then it is fine, or NCR or Legion.
Fallout series are RPG games, so you create character (good/bad or between) and you have choice to choose what happens.
Play the game your own way and be happy that there is games like Fallout New Vegas and such.

The Kings are so hard-pressed and busy that whenver I go in their HQ, they're standing around.

Do you want to play a game where every faction's headquarter is just an empty space? Or do you want to wait really long for Obsidian to give them idle animations in which they do stuff?
The Kings actually have a life in Freeside, having a life is actually quite an accomplishment in a slum in the post-apacolyptic wasteland.

I think it's a fair point. It's a huge, dominating gang and they do....nothing.
Most of Freeside is under their wing, the only people that could stand up to them aren't going to (Van Graffs/Wrangler/maybe Mormon Fort). What do they do? Chillax in their school and maybe occasionally go out to pester NCR and other freesiders.

They don't do anything, whether that's bad or good doesn't matter, they're just sitting there, not because Obsidian gave them no idle jobs but because they aren't doing anything.

I mean maybe they couldn't clean the whole of Freeside up but how about their little corner huh? Why not renovate some buildings, maybe go clean that nearby alley of thugs.

Oh, right, too busy talking the talk to walk the walk. They're a gang, not a mean one but an incredibly lazy one.

first of all, let me start by saying I'm a House supporter, I used to be pro-Yes Man (with House being a close second), but then I realized that his ending was basically the same as Mr. House's ending, except in Mr. House's ending humanity actually made progress.
But anyway, every. Single. Headquarters. Of. Every. Single. Faction. Is. Full. Of. People. Doing. Nothing. Period.

I know but you can gather what they do by talking to them.
McCarran they pretty much do nothing, for example. They all say they're currently stuck there (hell, most NCR camps are doing nothing, some Ranger stations are obviously fighting though, some camps patrol/engage Legion)
Mormon Fort, the FotA may sit around doing nothing in game but it's clear they're helping people by what they and other people say.

The Kings are just another faction who do nothing. They don't help people, they don't renovate, they don't fight to clean the streets up. They do nothing. It's not just that they're idle because of a lack of development there (not a complaint, t'would be pointless to waste time on animating all the idle individuals) it's that they really don't do anything.

I know other factions just sit around, Van Graffs just stand there all day, the Garrett twins are either sleeping or at the bar as far as I can tell but it's obvious that they actually work. The King may occasionally do some stuff but let's face it he knows jack about what's going on outside. He's the last to know of disturbances, the last to know his own guys are stopping people getting water for chrissakes. They're not just idle in game, it's apparent that they don't do anything in the game's world either.

I just read the first five pages of this thread. I thought I was on the first page when I posted...

Wrighty, what's up with your grammar?
And your arguments are completely... Damn, my vocabulary isn't as great as Colonel Martyr's. I'll just say flawed.

Well, in any case, House would be one of the best choices, along with the NCR. The NCR DOES mirror early America, Colonel, so remember that. I'm not saying NCR is better than House, though.

Whats flawed about my arguments?
And im originally from Germany, may have something to do with it
