Helping Mr. House

Post » Tue Mar 01, 2011 7:49 pm

Oops sorry. 200-260 years old. Its no better and makes no real diffrence. He has not experienced what its like to actually be human for a long time

The kings death serves as an example as to the kind of guy house is. I am fully aware you can avoid it, if you get the kings to fight trained, better equiped soldiers. Makes no diffrence to how house reacts if they actually ally with the NCR and help freeside.

The FotA was just a way of me saying house would wipe out anything and kill anyone if his calculations told him so. House isnt actually human, so why should mankind have a leader who isnt actually a man

What? How is he not human? Just because he doesn't live in the timeframe that people dictate we live? So in real life, those people currently in Cryogenic Freezing, if successfuly revived 500 years in the furute, them being 500+ years old automatically dictates that they are not human? Thats utter dross and you know it.

Don't forget it's not like he's been actually alive for that time, much of it was spent asleep/in stasis after trying to protect Vegas almost destroyed everything.
I dislike the argument, it seems to stem from his impartiality which is wholly illogical, besides it's nonsensical. Who cares? He may not be overtly compassionate but he's rational and he understands people. You think he'd be a better leader if he cried every now and again and maybe had a down day with a blanket and some ice cream?

Hold on a second, House failed to deceive, lie or even attempt to manipulate? The first thing he tells the Courier is that he is special, and present him/her a presidential suite. He creating an illusion that the Courier is working with, not under, or far under him; just like how he allows NCR to "annex" the Strip. What about Courier 4? I doubt he is killed by escaped convicts right in front of the Mojave Express Office.

The 4th courier appears to have been killed by the escaped gangers, either that or when he was gunned down the next two couriers calmly walked past his body "Oh look the other guy on our assignment was killed less than two paces from the start, welp, this is gonna be a toughie!"
Seriously, it happened after the delivery...

As for his treatment of the courier, flip through to the ending, he keeps you in the Lucky 38 and if you have good karma it states that he gives you all the luxuries you desire, through pride in his protege.
How is that not working with him?
Yes he orders you around but then you're an extremely competent employee, he's not inviting you to be a partner off the bat, you work for him, this is how contracts happen. If I got an exceptional employee in a time of absolute crisis I wouldn't just let him go, I'd make him work his [censored] off until the crisis abated, then I'd give him the bonus and praises and move him on up.
House does treat you like a worker at first but it quickly becomes apparent that he sees you as more, I get the feeling you either didn't play his ending or didn't pay much attention to it.

I've seen more than one post go 'I didn't like House because he hurt my feelings.' Which is funny, seeing as they must have picked a 'bad' dialogue choice, since when I played for House, his dialogue went from condescending overboss to proud employer. Since I like playing as a goody two shoes, Houses end slide made my heart swell a little, feeling proud I made the right choice.

Mr. House is a man that's looking out for the benefit of mankind as a whole. He isn't looking for an imperialist state like Oliver and Kimball with the NCR, or an empire based on slavery with Caesar's Legion, and with Yes Man you don't what will happen with Vegas or the Mojave Wasteland. With House you know that he isn't corrupted and is trying to help humanity as a whole recover with his vast knowledge and technology.

Sure, Courier Four was trying to get Nathan Nash to safety and sacrifices himself in the process :whistling:

I did a House run (and the ending slides crash it the middle of it like always, anywho, I finish watching it on youtube), and it only tells me as if House have "brought" the whole Mojave. Sure we can't fault him as a businessman, but he's practically following Capitalism to its purest form and only consider the Great War as minor sit back makes me that he is not what a suitable ruler for the wasteland because he is too bold.

I mean, I don't mind if he rebuild his corporate empire and use it to shape the wasteland in his vision.

I also think Courier isn't as "favored" by House as you and Marty made it. In the end, if the Courier did die in his swallow grave, or fail to recover the platinum chip, or whatever in between to the end of 2nd Battle of Hoover Dam, he can always found a replacement.

I do think Mister House is the best hope of humanity at this point, but i end up killing him anyways because i'm a simple human and i don't want him to wipe out my Brotherhood friends and The Kings.

Well it's more logical than any other route, him being killed in Primm when the others went off without a hitch suggests he was killed afterwards, perhaps he returned after the delivery and ran into the gangers.

He is bold and I understand trepidation about his ideals but it works. He is a technological mastermind and he makes it abundantly clear that he intends to divert all his resources towards technological progress and reclamation for the benefit of man. I don't know why he likes mankind he never really mentions it, perhaps he does it solely to do business in the future, when the world is devoid of life it's hard to strike bargains. Perhaps he does actually care, who knows? Point is he wants man to survive, be free and be able to work.
He is pretty much Ayn Rand's wet dream so working under him is good for those with talent and poor for those without. Unlike most capitalist societies his should be extremely anti corruption. Of course I can't say for sure, that's only assuming he stays as he is (he has no need for money and appears to lack the sentimentality for nepotism, so I find it hard to see him being corrupt, he wouldn't gain anything).

Indeed he would, he'd find a replacement very quickly and go with them, assuming they were capable (though given the average IQ of the Mojave he's probably out of luck...). He's a businessman, if you do well, you get promoted, if you save his [censored], activate his army and secure peace he makes you his lieutenant. He doesn't think you're a wonderful guy who just deserves a place. You're a person who gets stuff done, that's why he favours you.

I think House would be on the top of the Mojave (and eventually the wasteland's if you support him) corruption chain, just like any successful businessman would. I don't think House actually *likes* human, but human are certainly much easier to be labor powering his empire, unlike Lakelurk or DeathClaw. Sure he is a technological mastermind, but such mastermind often forget how *normal* people do not have full knowledge of a new technology and fall victim for it. To me, House's plan of putting wastelanders straight back to pre-war life-style would only led to fall like Rupture or mass up like NCR. House didn't learn anything from the great war, unlike the Master.

What House provide to the Courier is also very little; he is extremely wealthy like an Oil Baron in a third world country. And for all your hardwork all you get is living a few levels below him under his full monitor? There is no favor or trust, mere a carrot in front of a donkey to keep you motivate.

I've just finished a playthrough wherein I followed Mr. House up until he told me I had to exterminate the Brotherhood of Steel. They had been quite nice to me, so I told him to go [censored] himself, and used the Yes Man to gain control over Vegas. Sell Mr. House's ideals to me, because honestly I don't see him being a terribly good hope for the wasteland. Caesar is a giant dike, he was totalitarian Roman-Style society. NCR provides a flawed pre-war style government. Yes Man is a libertarian with a sizable army. What does Mr. House have to offer the wastes, or the Courier?

I'm not going to sell you on Mr. House. He's an ass who has been around long enough. It's time to snuff that light.

It's funny you mentioned Ayn Rand and your complaint of the Great War as a 'minor setback' to Mr. House, there is a quote by Ayn Rand that suits House and likely those who follow him that goes 'Throught the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their vision.'. People like House have the vision and the will to aim for that vision. House and Andrew Ryan are very obvious Randyan type characters. Rapture, New Vegas, all ideal utopias, while built on the backs of the weak to support the strong, with Bioshock, Raptures downfall was it's isolationist policy. With a dreamed Utopia, and House actually caring about Mankind, he could spread old world vision to those with the will to achieve it.

No.. i mean that its houses lack of contact with other humans that worries me. Sure the whole cryogenic freezing thing for the people is basically just fall asleep then wake up social skills intact. House is just stuck in his little tube, surrounded by securitrons and again the only contact he has with people is through heavily armed securitrons. He talks about saving mankind but how does he know what he is saving. Through his memories of pre war america? I believe a leader has to actually see what he is leading, house is based on the idea of pre war america and how it was so great. He is living in the past

Would showing his hand give House an edge? No. All it would do is needlessly expose his weakness to his enemies. He's got all the data he could need, meeting a few smelly wastelanders wouldn't help at all.

Uhm, if he didnt know about the wasteland, how would he know about the Brotherhood? How would he know about the Boomers? How would he know about the Legion? Your claim is moot because every single Securitron is a window for House that he can see through at any given time, he even has Securitrons scouting the Mojave.

I dont doubt his scouting skills, i mean the people [mankind]. He plans to rule new vegas and the mojave but he will know nothing about the day to day stuggles of the people in the Mojave, and how they desperatly need help. He will not see the people starving or getting r3ped by legionaries. And that will effect his decisions for the worse. He cannot properly talk to people or properly see their view,. Im sure you will say the same problem for the NCR beaurocrats but atleast people can talk to them about their decisions and the problem isnt half as bad for them as it is for house. House dosnt listen to the people he rules. Thats why house is a bad leader.

Thats a pretty uninformed claim of yours. Hous knows what is going on. But this circles back to 'Humanity, not neccassarily every human'. That's Houses leadership, and in truth, and large government entity that thrives MUST function this way. Why? Because attempting to appease every living soul under your care is a foolish goal because you can't please them all. Besides, House isn't trying to tax everyone and leave them to rot. His idealism is Lasseiz Faire at it's finest.

Most governments are humanity not every human. But at least they are made UP of humans, they have relatives, they have people to protest and to tell them when they have gone to far. House has no one to tell him when he is going to far, no one to tell him when to stop or when he is making a moral mistake. House isnt trying to tax everyone and leave them to rot? He just sends his robots in to kill anyone he needs to, including innocents. From what i see, house isnt appeasing everyone. He is appeasing no one, just his sick fantasy of a pre war world, where everything is advanced. Who is he appealing? Not freeside which will surely fall into chaos when the kings were wiped out. And who seem to make up the majorty of new vegas. The majority of people in the mojave seem to be struggling to survive and seem to be going through things house never has

I get the feeling I'm trying to teach music appreciation to a treefrog here.

Okay, let me size it down for you.

House has relatives, but his parents died when he was younger, and his older half brother who screwed him out of an inheretence. Stop acting like he has no sense of humanity because he isn't some tree hugging care bear.

Name an example where House 'kills innocents'. The Kings, as cool as they are are a gang, and even then, their death is an option that YOU can choose, their fate is on your hands. Stop making blatant lies, I've warned you against claiming The Kings death is 100% mandatory. If you help them fight against NCR, the endslide even says 'The Kings fighting the NCR, House sees this as a sign of their loyalty to New Vegas and left them alone.' Now please. STOP making hyperbole arguements.

Secondly, If House isnt appeasing people, then I guess those cozy tourists on the Strip are just ghosts huh? Derp. Once again, just because he neglects the useless for the useful doesnt make him evil, it makes him a man who doesn't wish to waste time.

Thirdly, Struggling to survive my foot, every settlement you come across has an economy. Goodsprings= Hide and meat and general trade, Primm= Casinos and trade, NoVac= Trade and REPCONN as a salvage source, Nipton WAS a trading town and prostitution town. 188 Trade Post= Trading.

Finally, Whats wrong with Pre-War comfort in Vegas? Before you give me that rubbish about 'Pre-War people caused the war' No, It wasn't. Know who started the war? Those very people we elected who lied claiming they'd protect us. Between given the option to live in dumpy wastelands or Pre-War luxury, I'd pick luxury, and I'm willing to bet you would too unless you're a survivalisty outdoorsman.

First- No one in the Mojave is some tree hugging care bear, but House seems exceptionally cold. What with his casual order for you to mass murder the BoS and him wiping out the kings, a gang helping freeside and supposedly the city he loved, because they MIGHT strong emphasis on might given the kings value of independence, help the NCR. And he stopped them making a relief effort for the people of Houses city. Sure now you will shout that the kings dont have to be killed off you can have them fight the NCR [fully trained soldiers, better armed and armoured] and house spares them. I accept that. But i judge on EVERY ending you get with him, every decision he makes, not just his best ending where the superman courier makes sure everything is right for him. House ordered the kings to be wiped out and thats my fault? Its his own damn decision. Sure i can make it better, but i carry the knowledge that without the courier that is what house would have done, that is the kind of guy house is

Second-The Tourists in the strip represent the top 1 percent of the people of the Mojave, the rich. 3000 caps [i think thats the right amount or 2000, still alot] to get in. With NCR maybe 50 percent of the population is appeased and happy.

Third-Well i dont understand youre third post, please elaborate

Fourth-I mean by his sick idea of pre war splendour and what not. Is the whole "Im saving mankind and doing them all a favour" When hundreds and thousands of people starve in freeside or get shot trying to get out of freeside by the robots. And he does nothing. True maybe he is well meaning and he truly believes he is helping mankind, but i find it to be sick how a man that rich and powerful can turn a blind eye to the people outside his gates and still talk about saving mankind and how he cares about the world.

I won't argue your first point, because at this point. I keep explaining why you're wrong, yet you persistently say the same thing as if I'm not saying anything.

Second- It's 2,000. Who cares if the average man in the Mojave can't afford to get onto The Strip, it's essentially a party town. Does the average man NEED to go and get drunk? No. Does the average man NEED to have six with hokers? No. Does an average man NEED to risk his entire lifes savings just to feel like a big shot and lose house and home in one roll of the dice? No. The Strip in all it's glory is a luxury, a place of comfort, ease, luxury. It's a business. It's quantessentially no different than The Gun Runners or Mick and Ralphs. Tell me, do you complain when you see people in Freeside unable to shop at The Gun Runners or Mick and Ralphs? I bet you don't. You shrug it off and say 'Thats the way it is'. This is no more true for The Strip and all the business's it beholds.

Third- What I mean is, only people on their own out in the middle of nowhere are truly fighting to survive, and even those, those are the morons or Brahmin Ranchers, anyone with common sense will find a community to settle into. Humans are not largely pillars of strength, oh sure you have men like House and Caesar who mustered the strength to become their own powerhouse. But in general, humans by nature are pack animals. All the settlements we see in New Vegas are doing quite well compared to D.C.

Fourth- Your problem with House is a socially taught one. You've been brought up on the idea that we must always help every poor soul who comes to beg, yet most beggars, not all mind you, simply lack any want beyond 'they should give me money because I am poor and he is rich.' The people on the streets in Freeside are full of parasites who ask 'Where's my share?' or 'I deserve some of what House has'. Julie Farkas says it best about Freeside, "No one has been man enough to do something about it [it meaning Freesides troubles]."

Then I think it's a straight difference of opinion, I find it hard to see House as easily corruptable (if you know Watchmen, think of Veidt) because of his traits and lack of needs. Unlike most men he does not gain pleasure from base things, he cannot eat good food, enjoy good drink or even good company. The man is unassailable by normal means, the only thing which he wants is money and that to turn into economy. To take money for corrupt means would be foolish (assuming the person is too inept to obtain post or status without corruption while you may gain money you then have an inept employee) so it's really hard to see him being corrupt.
The men under him? Well I would think it would be less corrupt than most institutions but the idea of it being entirely free of corruption is implausible, though not impossible.

He is extremely wealthy but he gives you a lot, again in the ending slide he offers your every desire, maybe part of that is him trying to keep you (I mean let's face it, the Courier stares down two entire armies and a number of tribes/gangs, I would NOT want to screw with them) but in the ending slide it says he has pride in you. It is favour for your good work and trust? It's trust from moment one, he allows you into the Lucky 38, trusting you not to go ahead and murder him. He lets you live there, again close to his heart. He trusts you with his life and with a lot of his work. Admittedly anything beyond the game is mere speculation but it's not hard to see you being his right hand man, you are, after all, his sought out protege now.

As it is I'm with Martyr. I do dislike this ideal that man should share wealth simply because we want it. If a man acquires his wealth through illicit means then yes, I would get behind that, more to strip the person than to give to others but if a man works their [censored] off and through dedication and simply being better makes more money than you?

Get over it.

We work, we progress, we make our own way in life, there's no reason why with two able men, one should supply the other. It makes no sense, it makes even less if the person is forced to supply because he's better.
The biggest problem with pure capitalism like this, the capitalism that House embodies, is corruption, nepotism and cheating. Those three mean men who are lesser get more, while men who are greater don't. Remove the three and we each make our own way.

Some people are smarter, some people are faster, some stronger, some wittier. That's life, no way should better people be punished because those around them are inept.

How do i put this in the simplest terms.... I judge house by everything he says and does in the game with and without the courier. just And like i said before its Houses decision. House made the concieous decision to destroy the kings and its not like i forced him to. Do you deny, if there were no courier, and the kings and NCR were not fighting, would House later decide to destroy the kings? Just because you can avoid House destroying the Kings dosnt get rid of the fact that he is the kind of guy who would destroy the kings because ect. Its not so much the kings being destroyed, its the knowledge that House is capable of making the sick and unnessesary decision of having the kings destroyed.

Second-What you said would be completely right, if House didnt preach helping mankind and new vegas, while hundreds of people in new vegas starved. Sure people dont need gambling and drinking, but they need safety, money, shelter. All things people in freeside dont have. Not so much what people in the strip have, what people in freeside dont have. It annoys me and sickens me that house preaches helping mankind and new vegas [which the gun runners and crimson caravans dont] while hundreds of people starve just outside.

Third-I will accept that things are mostly better in New Vegas than in DC. But things are not that great. You see nipton and primm, and you get an idea of the kind of insecurity that the wasteland still has. Which sort of proves that just because people are in groups does not make them that much safer, when the fiends, CL, and powder gangers are around. Most of the towns and communities in New Vegas are still a stone throws away from being slaughtered and wiped out, Novac, CL gettitng ready to attack, Goodsprings, Powder gangers, Nipton, Destroyed, Primm, Taken over by convicts, Jacobstown, Attacked by the NCR mercenaries. People are still definetly fighting for their lives out there.

Fourth- Parasites? Many poor people in freeside are parasites, what kind of thinking is that? They are refugees , fleeing the fiends and powdergangers and CL. You should give them money, because its simply the right moral thing to do. Its not like they can get proper jobs, and crime is so bad, they probably spend every day simply trying to survive. Like the kids chasing giant rats. Its not so easy, when you are stuck in a slum like freeside to get out, and what Julie Farkas meant that no one is strong enough to fight the thugs and junkies that roam the streets.

No, because had The Courier not interviened in The Kings lives, one would be led to believe Pacer would still lead the gang to go to war.

Forgive my vulgarity, but that logic is [censored]. They could have Shelter as they wish, yet, go into Freeside, count how many buildings are boarded up, unused. Why? Because mostly everyone in Freeside is lazy, hoping someone will be a bleeding heart and enrich their lives. Also, if you're going to try and use 'he says its for the best' and use that as the base of your faulty logic, we can also argue how the game dialogue says you can take over Vegas, yet the slides simply go 'NOPE ITS UNRULED LOL'. Simply put, you're twisting words the wrong way.

Third-I will accept that things are mostly better in New Vegas than in DC. But things are not that great. Right, and that's what House is doing, fighting for his life. Who is the foreign invader? NCR and Caesars Legion. Who's the saliant threat due to their terrorist and raider ways? The Brotherhood. The fact of the matter is, we only see short term slides. But see, if you help Primm under NCR rule, but help House, he sends Securitrons to tax the town and PROTECT IT. Which show's he obviously cares for those under his rule. Know what NCR does? Taxes you and says 'Lol, can't, got bad guys to fight'.

They are. Notice how many drunks, druggies, and all around layabouts are just peddling for caps in Freeside? Not to mention the thugs who [censored] and kill people. It's filled with Parasites. Also, There is strength in numbers, do you know why no one is strong enough? Because no one is willing to risk their chances for a better life, which is what life is all about, risks for greater reward. Living until 100% stable chances occur is only going to keep you held back.

Mr. House isn't the man that looks to help every single bum on the streets, but looks at the big picture. You mention that you should give money to people in Freeside, such as the junkies that can go and get more chems or maybe to some thugs? The people in Freeside create their own problems.
