How are the Legion a threat to the NCR again?

Post » Tue May 31, 2011 5:27 am

I hope that's true about the raiders, I have this dream where Jericho and Clover settle down as ruling consorts.
Producing a new generation of muderous psychopaths with bad lungs, and a penchant for slicing people up as crazy as they can.

I can see the Outcasts making demands and attempting to get their hands on more of that tech, but I keep getting the fealing that they've moved on tbh.

I really hope we get more with them in FO4.
Feels like they had a lot of potential within the story and were not flesh out enough.

My hopes for Capital Wasteland is that Super Mutants were driven out by ECBOS but because of that fight with them and Enclave their numbers have really been lowered and Outcasts have become a major power and taken charge of the area.
Because of all the wars ECBOS have massively declined in power and were forced out of the area by The Outcasts which are in alliance with Talon Company.
Talon Company only did what they did because someone paid them to do so, and Outcasts, because they didn't fight any unnecessary wars to "save the people" they have the money and tech to buy Talon's services and the two groups have a joint operation going on.
Talon Company are supplied by Outcasts and takes control over areas, invoking "their" rules and becoming a large empire, with Outcasts being able to move around as they please and loot technology with little resistance and by the time of Fallout 4 have the most superior weapons.
Basically, Talon Company is the new empire, Outcasts are the dark government. (Hmmm Adytum..)

So by Fallout 4, the new area will include ECBOS, barely surviving.
With Super Mutants slowly dying out, trying to survive under the leadership of Leo or Fawkes.
And with Talon Company and Outcasts trying to take control over yet another land mass. /Hopes for Fallout 4

Hmm, kinda offtopic I guess.

Exactly why I make sure to get them both rather than talk Lanius into leaving.....without Caesar and his lieutenants his Empire will rip itself apart. If Lanius, Lucius, or Inculta survive they could hold it together so they all must die.

A defeat at the Dam wouldn't be an end...it is just the beginning. Caesar intends to prosecute the War until either he is defeated or the Last leaders of the NCR are led in chains down the Strip in his Triumph celebrating the conquest of the NCR then crucified. If the NCR is driven out of the Dam, and the Mojave, the next campaign will be against the NCR itself. Not only will the NCR be dealing with the loss of the Dam, and it's electricity, but with Legion raids into the NCR proper as he looks for a weakness to exploit. this would rightly be blamed on Kimball, and he would likely be voted out and his successor would find his/herself in a fight for the NCR's very survival.

Since their General and high commanders are all dead it's GG.

And if we want to look at technology to me it seems the CL are far more advanced than people seem to suggest.

They mint their own coins.
They most likely manufacture all those 12.7mm, ballistic fists, and marksman carbines we see ( but as discussed before they probably are lacking true industrial capacity), but as far as i can see they are a far more modern force than the Eastern BOS, they don't even have the capacity to really manufacture weapons as they CL can.

And the stories of Enclave vertibirds owning hundreds of CL was many many years ago, the legion has grown and advanced greatly, and as said before a few assault rifles firing AP rounds would probably chew it up.

I will admit I have not read all 7 pages so what I am about to say may be moot, but I am sayin it anyway ;) .

First off I think killing off Ceasar, and Lanius would be the only act that would truly save the Legion. Ceasar is a hypocrite who is useing the ideaology of Rome to further himself... we see this when we hear that the only way to gain rank in the Legion is to fight someone who is in your possistion, and is viewed as weak by you. Ceasar is useing an Auto-Doc...? Why has one of his guards not curbstomped him for being weak and taken over? And Lanius... while I think Ceasar talks down about him so he does not get ideas (not as bad as Ceasar makes him or you could not talk the man down) I don't think he would make a good leader.

Killing Ceasar, and Lanius would build a power vacume, but instead of destroying the Legion the one who rose out would be one who actually believes in the ideas behind the Legion. There would be infighting, and odds are the Legion would be out of the picture for years, but when things settled down it would truly be a roman force.

Now onto the OPs topic as to why I feel the Legion are a threat to the NCR... Well mostly because they are fighting a two front battle. The physical battle, and the mental battle. The tactics the Legion use are horrible, but it works. We see time and again how they are attacking the NCRs will to fight.

Spoiler

I think there only blunder in the mental battle was assassinating the president. Everyone knew there was a hit out on him, and I doubt his death would do anything other then build resolve for the men fighting at the dam... They should have killed the kid getting the medal. There would have been deserters over that...

Auto-docs are not forbidden, Medicine is.

Killing Caesar would'nt change anything, According to the game, Lanius is not a Power Vacuum, If anything he would be one of the only people capable of conquering NCR and Hoover Dam, The Praetorian Guards would not usurp him because if one of them tried, They have to kill the highest ranking Praetorian, A.K.A. The badass of the guard.

Killing cesar and letting Lanius live would do the exact opposite of giving the legion a good leader. Lanius himself represents EVERYTHING that is bad about the Legion. Cesar maybe a hypocrite. But he is a hypocrite who follows his ideals. And they aren't so bad at all.

Lanius would end up killing off the entire legion because he doesn't care about who lives or dies and the legion would pretty much implode.

I don't think Ceasar is telling the truth about Lanius. I think he is afraid of what he has turned Lanius into. Everything we hear Ceasar say about him is false once we meet him.

Spoiler

1. Lanius only cares about killing he does not care about the Legion or its ideas.
As a Legion player when you first meet him in his tent he is making a sacrifice to the God Mars. Not out in the public where everyone would see him do it, but privately. That is not the actions of a man going through the motions. It is the actions of a man who devout.

2. Lanius's reasons for wearing his mask...
Yes it could be a graphics thing, but it would have been easy to shove a ghoul head on a normal body to pull off the burned look. When you demask him he is unburned.

3. Lanius is unreasonable, and a savage monster...
Yeah because we can talk down all savage monsters.

Everyone in the Legion besides Ceasar says nothing but praise for Lanius. They all admire him... I think Ceasar is losing his grip on his child, and is afraid of the classic evil trope of the student killing the master.

About that vacume I was talking about that would raise forth a greater leader then Lanius, or Ceasar... only way for that to work is if they both died. If Lanius lives then yes of course he will take over. Hell I think if the 'good' Legion ending happens Lanius will take over in a year or two anyway if Ceasar does not have him killed first.

What? Sorry I don't get any of these reason, especially not why they would matter towards his savage nature.

And nearly everyone in the legion you meet are military types too. Which makes their blind devotion for Lanius only more visible.

Honestly, as much as I despise Caesars Legion, I'd honestly prefer Caesar be leader than Lanius. Lanius is the very embodiement of cruelty and destruction, Caesar has honor and wisdom. If you see the Caesar ending vs the Lanius ending, it shows Caesar has 100x the honor Lanius does.

Man I wish it had not been so long since I did my Legion run... Things get a bit mumbled after a while for me, but

Spoiler

He is very honorable as seen from the other side of the battle when if you are good karma only you can challenge him to a duel.

Also when working for the legion he also shows how much he hates the underhanded'ness of the Frumentarii, and how that kind of warfare is not honorable. He also loses a lot of respect for the player if you finish the 'bad' quest for the Omertas.

Also on that talk him down from fighting front it shows that he fully believes in the actions behind the Legion. He really believes he would helping the west by culling the weak, and allowing the strong to gain power as they should.

As you can tell I really like Lanius as a character. Yes he is a monster... just not the monster Ceasar paints him out to be... one much more dangerous. I think the Legion would be a much better place with him in charge.

*edit*
@ Colonel Martyr... Lanius has just as much, if not more honor then Ceasar. Lanius is just a bit more... straight forward, and less backstabby then Ceasar.

Lanius is'nt a mindless savage, If you speak with him he seems intelligent.

More so than Caesar, Don't get me wrong though, Caesar is still okay, But Lanius would lead the Legion to greatness.

Lanius is actually quite honourable, more so than Moore or some of the other NCR beaurocrats [spelling] Even playing as the NCR you cant help but admire his views at the very end of the game. He says how the legion would have helped the mojave, they would have put the strong in charge and would have broken the weak. One thing for certain is that he isnt some mindless phyco who just likes killing, he is doing what he thinks is best for the mojave.

Btw ask Raul what he thinks about Ceasers legion, i think he has got it right

Whether the Legion is a true threat or not, one thing is certain. Both the Legion and NCR have, conveniently, over-powered NPCs at the Battle of Hoover Dam. So they're pretty much the same.

I can see there is a argument for Ceasers and Laniuses view of things. They believe in "You are with me or against me"

But was his ending in the long run? Or shortly after?

I mean, If they are all massacred, It would kind of enforce the "Don't screw around or you are dead" rule.

Yeah but Primm, and Goodsprings? Those are just small towns. IIRC, Caesar sends troops to monitor it, and Lanius ends up killing it. (Pending what sherriff you use.)

The Legion has the manpower of 80 tribes from Colorado to Arizona, whereas the NCR has only their manpower they could spare from the Core Region. The Legion fights like the Viet Cong, they may not have overwhelming firepower and technology, but they used superior numbers in attrition warfare against the NCR. Plus the legion uses spies like Captain Curtis and Vulpes Inculta to sew chaos and dissent among the Mojave region that works against the NCR.
