How to be a moderator?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 7:57 pm

I can't imagine any benefits to being a mod. You have to read through every boring thread, and babysit the forum. You get to lock obnoxious threads. What a pain that would be.

Gonna have to agree with you on that, but I think that everyone has had a desire to be a mod at some point. :P

The free swag does sound appealing though.

Probably starts with not making a thread asking how, then you probably have to have no bad marks on your record and you likely have to have been here for a long time.

What are the benefits of being a mod? (not that aspire to be one, just curious)
I'm mostly in it for the custom title.

You challenge one to a duel. If you defeat them you inheret their titles, powers, and second life lands. Note, though, since you are the challenger, they get to pick the weapon and set the conditions. All I can say is don't challenge HD as he'll harsly defeat you in a banjo duel.
Unless we're in Georgia, then tradition dictates I use a fiddle.

If you are angling for a hug, you'll have to bug Rohugh. We don't call him the cuddly bear because he's got the blackest heart and grumpiest demeanor... oh wait. Yes we do.

Don't you get all Bethesda games free?

If that is true, is it only the Game Studios productions, or all published games?
All of them, including Rogue Warrior. But after a while, even sweet swag like that begins to pall. :P

I thought we a had rule to not speak of that game. :P

So, lets say they publish 2 games a year. That's 120. Divided by 365, and then 24... about $0.01 an hour. :P

Nobody said it was high paying. :D

We did get other stuff too. I haven't had to buy a t-shirt in a few years and I've still got an unopened Nuka Cola in the fridge, growing hair.

I'd think you should only want to be a mod if you truly love the forum, and like the people in it(that's not saying you can't disagree with them). It's certainly a demanding job, and can sometimes leave you with a sour taste in your mouth, but it also has it's fulfilling moments, when you come across certain posts that reaffirm your faith in humanity(which is doubly as nice, since you know, it's the internet). I was a mod/administrator for an old Anime site that I wrote reviews for. Sadly it closed down about two years after I arrived, lost contact with a lot of great people there.

But yeah, moderatorship is not something to be taken lightly, it certainly has it's stressful moments. One of the reasons why I try to always be respectful of any forums rules, even if I don't always agree with them.

The first step to becoming a mod is to take an arrow in the knee...

Go wild. I'm not the first to have heard of the horrors that await within the mod dungeon. HeyYou and Yasgur are some of the few that have survived its depths if you need reference.

What? So I get to roll with the "Moderator" title under my name? I've had the desire, too, surely, but only to ban some idiots that don't know how to make threads.

I guess the key is to be mature and not trample on too many rules.

I was talking about how they sometimes get free stuff whenever a game comes out.

It'd be cool to get the free stuff without having to moderate. They haven't enthusiastically embraced that scheme so far, though.

There has been one occasion I know of where someone was modded and they had a warning - whether it was cleared before or whether it disappeared when they were made up I am not sure. We don't have warning bars, so a warning does not necessarily preclude someone from being a moderator.

However, knowledge of the forum rules is a must, and not knowing that you don't discuss your warning levels on the forum does not go down well. :stare:

  • Have at least a post count of 10,000+
  • Don't spam, flame, troll or every other kinds of fun
  • Delete or edit every post that contradicts Step 2.
  • Make friends with the mods (maybe the Beth developers too).
  • ???
  • Profit!!!
