my impression after joining the thieves gild

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:15 am

i have just got to be a part of the thieves gild and i must say how impressed i am for the fantastic course the plot has suddenly taken. Until now my skyrim experience had been mostly walking in the wilds for a while, then get in a cavern (or anywhere underground) kill some enemies, get out, back in the wilds again... ok, i′ve bought a home in whiterun and i have lydia and many things have happened. But talking to the guys in the gild and understanding the idea behind their presence in the game has been enlightening to me. This is such a great game actually... Because after several hours playing most other games you know already what you have to do and then they become mechanical and repetitive and boring. But in Skyrim, after many, many hours i still have the feeling that i am merely scratching the surface of it.
It′s my first RPG, may be that′s the reason, don′t know. Anyway, after my initial doubts about the idea now i must say that i feel somewhat proud to be a part of the gild. Hope i won′t regret it.

always liked the thieves guild because it was about taking something and not being seen, not RUN INTO PLACE KILL ALL THE PEOPLE GET LOOT AND RETURN.

Nope, that's your reason.

If you were done with the Thieves' Guild I could direct you to a fantastic link that breaks down the story and shows why it's terrible.

4 things that could have improved the Thieves guild 100X
  • A way to kill them and Maven off like the DB
  • Thieves Guild Followers
  • Ownerships of Goldenglow estate
  • Vault that is usable after the TG quest

The Gray Fox is a Cyrodiilic figure - not to mention that the Great War could very well have resulted in the death of the fourth era's Gray Fox. It nearly destroyed the Dark Brotherhood, so the Thieves Guild would be an easy target.

And I much prefer the Skyrim guilds to Oblivion. For example, the Fighters Guild vs. the Companions. In the Companions I feel like I'm fighting for honor. In the Fighter's Guild, I'm sorting out arrogant members or looking after the Guild Master's weak son. And once you reach the top you dont even fight at all. I don't mind the FG quests in Oblivion, but I much prefer the Companions.

Are you seriously telling us, that the OP's good impression of the thieves guild isn't valid? And that you have objective 'proof' of the contrary?

Jeez - I know there are "How-to-truly-play-RPG-games-police" out there, but to meet one in person (almost) ;-)

I don't, since you need to pledge allegiance to a daedric lord in every guild except the College. (Yes I know, Sithis is technically not a daedric lord...)

With Nocturnal and especially Sithis I can live, but Hircine is the daedric lord of the hunt, not fighting in general...

@Trueno

If you like the plot of the Skyrim guilds you should use some of your time to play Oblivion. ;)

To be fair you can go back on the pledge later. Agreed that it was annoying that there was no way around it.

I liked the plots of the guilds, or rather the premises. They were simply for the most part too short. The two stealth guilds seem to be best, I prefer the tone of this Thieves' Guild to the Oblivion one, and to a degree it seems in some places better set up for stealth (though in others not).

My first guild was the Mages College - that was kind of blah. Quests were ok, especially toward the end.

I did the Thieves Guild second, and that was much better. Although it was tiresome to hear, "You can't walk away without doing jobs," or something like it. Get used to it, I'm the boss now lol.

I just finished the Companions a few days ago, and I really liked the quests there. The ending was great. Don't worry about the werewolf part, you don't ever have to use if you don't want, and you get a permanent cure at the end.

I have another character that is about halfway into the Dark Brotherhood quest, and that also is a great quest line.

I'll say that i liked the thieves guild more than any of the other guild questlines in skyrim, but thats not saying much because they're no where near in comparison to the guild questlines in Oblivion.

Instead i think that with the good approach the guild lines in Skyrim are on par with Oblivion; and sometimes even better.

Bear in mind that is difficult to do once again the same thing without being too repetitive, and from that point of view Skyrim guilds are very successful.

Perhaps only too short for someone that avoid completely the secondary jobs (bad approach in my opinion)

Let's put it this way: oblivion guild quests were more fun and immersive sometimes (Db and Tg above all) but Skyrim ones are better "organised".

Spoiler
My only complaint is that you can't assign job to other members when you become guild master,or take followers from the Tg.But Db Night Mother quests are very fun,and Companions Sos either

The Radiant quests are crap anyway. Walk into house, steal this item. Clean out a Skeever den. Beat up someone. Bleh.

Some radiant quests are very fun instead; see my spoiler above
However i agree with you that Tg radiant quests have a lot of room for improvement from that standpoint.

I think i can elaborate better now what i liked of the situation created with the Thieves Guild. It was the feeling that i was not merely playing an FPS, but i really belonged to a world. The npc′s were more than dummies for a while and felt more like real characters. May be because i suspected they were simply ragtag i was surprised when i understood their mood and their intentions after talking to them. Well written, well acted and well directed.

thank you all for your replies. Sorry for my bad english. I won′t write gild no more =(

I second this. Thieves Guild is not exactly perfect, but is much better than 90% of joinable organization in Skyrim

  • Vault that is usable after the TG quest

You can use the Vault after the TG questline. Give a follower a picklock then tell them to wait in front of the door. Now, "push" your follower back into door and they'll picklock and open the door. I actually did this once I joined the TG just for laughs then watch later as the TG members 'open' a door that is already open.

The part I didn't like about the TG was the radiant quests. They were ok for a time or two but quickly grew boring. The rest of the quest line was great but having to do 5 jobs in each major city was a total drag because there was no variation in the jobs. They weren't a bit interesting and the jobs were identical in each city. To me it felt more like a lazy way to add filler to an underdeveloped quest line. I did enjoy the main quests but just like most of the guilds it wasn't enough so they tossed in the radiant filler to fluff it up. I hope they don't do that next time unless they find a way to make the radiant quests more interesting and unique.

It's interesting to see people praise the guilds in Oblivion compared to Skyrim, when the same comparison has been made between Morrowind and Oblivion.

Thats great :) I have heard alot of complaints against the thieves guild in skyrim.

Glad you like it man. And yeah skyrim being your first RPG is the reason. Glad skyrim is going to take a special place in your gaming heart

Honestly I felt the thieves guild is one of the stronger questlines in skyrim. Granted the twists are rather obvious and you seen the main one a mile away (i did anyway). That being said it wasn't very good and terribly short too (just like all the other guilds). I didn't like oblivion but their guilds certainly were one of the few awesome aspects of that game.
