Jorrvaskr Exit CTD

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 4:26 am

I entered Jorrvaskr for the first time today since patch 1.2. I suddenly found myself trapped in the famous mead hall of the Companions as every time I would try to exit through one of the doors into Whiterun, it would go to a loading screen, and then crash to desktop. I tried loading earlier saves, I tried verifying my game cache files on Steam, I tried defragmenting my game files, I tried a full system reboot, I even tried updating my video drivers. No dice. It appears that Jorrvaskr is completely off-limits to me now because every time I enter it and then try to leave my game crashes before I make it through the loading screen to Whiterun. It's fortunate for me that I had done the Companion's quests before Jorrvaskr broke on the character I am working on and that I don't use any of the Companions as followers. Still, this svcks bad. If I ever try to do the Companions' quests again on another character, and I probably will, this would be a real game-breaker. Has anyone else experienced this? I really hope this gets resolved quickly. Between broken resistances, backwards flying dragons, and a Jorrvaskr that consistently makes me crash, I am really losing faith and interest in this game. Playing on PC, by the way.

Sorry, no. I am on my second dragonborn and both can exit and enter Jorrvaskr okay.

I can't think of what could be causing this. You've worked through everything I would have done.

Maybe next time you're outside the hall you could make a new save before entering in case the previous one you're getting trapped with is corrupt. But I guess you did that too.

EDIT: In a worst case scenario, maybe your game is corrupt. Try deleting and reinstalling?

I have tried the save game thing you mentioned. Would uninstalling and reinstalling my game make me lose my saves? I really don't want to lose my current game.

Sorry for the double post, but for some reason it won't let me edit my own post. Anyway, I just uninstalled a reinstalled my copy of Skyrim and I still CTD upon exiting Jorrvaskr. All my internet searches have turned up one other person who has had this issue and the only advice people could give him was to use console commands to teleport himself to Riverwood every time he wanted to leave Jorrvaskr. I am really trying to avoid resorting to console commands because I don't want to disable my steam achievements, but at the rate this game is going I'm going to have to just to get by. I'm terrified that this is such a little known and rarely seen problem that it will never get fixed and Jorrvaskr will be forever broken for me. Somebody, anybody, please help.

Yes! This happened to me too, on my level 60 with over 150 hours. It's weird because I've never had an issue before and I did the Companions first. Never had a ctd associated with Jorrvaskr. I experienced several ctds per day, but I could always just reload and everything would be ok. Not with this one. It's repeatable and nothing I can do will fix it, and I've tried everything I could find online. If I unselect "save on travel" and try to leave I get a weird tan colored screen. You can still see the "E" and hear sound (I think), but it still eventually crashes. I narrowed it down to two consecutive saves. Save 309, I can enter and exit Jorrvaskr. Save 310 I can't. The only difference is fifteen minutes and I did the short quest for the dark elf at the mages college where she experiments on you with magic. If I do the quest and go to Jorrvaskr, I can't exit. If I don't do the quest and go to Jorrvaskr, I can. I tried doing the quest and traveling around to different places and doing other quests, did matter, still couldn't leave Jorrvaskr. So I backed up my saves, deleted everything, uninstalled the game (again), reinstalled, verified and started a new game. No problems so far. Hopefully they'll get this fixed soon. I don't want all the time and effort of my first character to be a waste.

Also, another member of the forums messaged me with the same problem. He said there is a console command that will get you out. I'll have to look again to see what it is.

One possible non-console thing to try is to use the Wait command to pass 2 days, plus a few hours more. (2 days should be enough to cause a 'cleanup' and if it's a specific creature or event outside then trying it at a different time of day might let you bypass whatever it is.)

Ha, thanks for trying to help but I waited 3 days, then a week, then over a month. I waited all this time on a save before I went it, and then I loaded up and did after I went in. Didn't help.

I also tried exiting at all hours of the the day and night through every door, just for good measure.

It seems that You are having the same issue that I had at one point in Riften.

I noticed that it may have something to do with the autosaves. After I completely disabled the autosave feature I had zero CTDs/freezes on area transition and fast travel and I've played more than 60 hours from that point.

How to disable the autosave:
- Open SkyrimPrefs.ini in Your [My Documents]\My Games\Skyrim
- Find this lines:
bSaveOnPause=1
bSaveOnTravel=1
bSaveOnWait=1
bSaveOnRest=1
- Change each 1 to 0.

Give it a try and see if it will help.

Just tried this, but for future reference, you can toggle off auto saving in the in-game settings menu. This time something different happened. I made it out the door without crashing, but was met with a completely blank tan screen. I could run around, hear noises, etc., but I just couldn't see anything but a blank tan screen and my UI. More often than not when I run into a strange bug I can save the game, exit to desktop, reload and it will all be fine. So I tried to make a new save and reload the game to see if the tan screen would go away. As soon as I clicked "New Save", CTD. So it looks like the problem is kinda related to saves and kinda not. Also, to answer the wait "two days" response, I already tried this, and I don't think it's related to an event in Whiterun anyway because if I load the save I made just before I entered Jorrvaskr, I can enter and leave any other building in the town. Just not Jorrvaskr.

You could try reinstalling Skyrim. Just so your saves can be safe, just go to your mygames folder and move your saves to a different folder.

I already did this too. Didn't work.

I know I'm hoping against hope here, but an official response on this issue letting me know whether or not this is on their to-do list would make my day.

Just an FYI for anyone else having this problem, you can type "coc riverwood" into your console without the quotations to teleport to riverwood and successfully exit Jorrvaskr until this gets fixed and you don't have a problem with using console commands. As for getting into the Companion's living area, which is instanced off seperately from the rest of Jorrvaskr, it CTDs when I try to go down there through the door too. Looks like there's no way down there that I know of until Bethesda fixes this.

I wonder if you can "coc whiterun"?

You can't go down to the living quarters? It lets me do that. Originally that's the reason I went there; to get the daedra heart.

I would just play and use the console command to get me out of there, but I have to wonder if I'll start ctd more often in different places; in other words, I wonder if something is corrupt.

I dunno. I hope nothing's corrupted. That is really going to svck if it's my saves and nothing can be done about it. Skyrim had become an escape for me during finals week. A place I could go to forget about all the stress and studying and worrying whether or not I am going to pass. Now I feel like I can't even play it what with the broken Jorrvaskr, backwards flying dragons, nonexistant magical resistances, and random CTDs every 15 minutes. I find myself bored with nothing else to dwell on except the stress of the upcoming finals in my courses. It's driving me bat[censored], and here Bethesda isn't even making a move to fix any of this until sometime "next week". It's just going to kill the game forever for me if I find out that "Too bad so sad, your save is corrupt. Start from scratch and wish upon a star that it doesn't happen to your new game too."

Exactly, I don't feel confident playing any character when, at any moment, a gamebreaking ctd could occur. It robs the fun out of it. I'm constantly worrying about the game crashing and the whole time I'm ocd about saving so when it does crash I don't have to replay an hour or two of the game. It really svcks.

I've sent an e-mail about this issue to Bethesda support. I'm hoping they can tell me whether or not this is a known issue that is on the block to be fixed. I'll let you know what they say, assuming I get a response.

Hi.
I'm having this issue too.
I've tried everything, reloading diferent saves, saving after each Quest i do, and reenter Jorrvaskr again, nothing, its just CTD again, i've waited months, reinstalling the game, etc. It's no use.
The only thing it gets me out is using the console command player.coc whiterun (Guess riverwood works also).
I'm done with the Companions Quests, but as anyone could imagine you eventually come back to this place to do something.
I'm currently a Warrior Lvl 67 with 150+Hs of Gameplay, and so far i don't know what could be causing this.
Almost quit playing at all, but luckily the console command do the trick to bypass this issue, so as for now, i'm still playing with the same character.
Hope Bathesda take a look into this issue as soon as possible.
Take care.

PS. Using Patch 1.1 now. Patch 1.2 Does nothing regarding this issue.

Earlier, I put my non-ctd save back in the save folder to play on him for a while. I first went to Jorrvaskr to see if I could leave, and I could, great. So, I ran around for a couple of hours doing various things and went back to whiterun to sell some loot. While I was there I thought I'd make sure I could still leave Jorrvaskr, so I went in and turned around to exit. CTD! Every time now. What a disappointment. I am able to leave via the console command, but still, the game is obviously bugged/corrupt and it makes me worry what kind of problems I'm going to run in to in the future if I keep playing on this character. I wouldn't mind if I knew it wouldn't get worse, but this toon is level 61 with 160 hours and I'm scared to push my luck.

I got a reply from my e-mail to bethesda support today. After explaining in my ORIGINAL E-MAIL that my problem began once patch 1.2 hit, they alerted me that 1.2 had recently been released and may fix my issue and to please make sure that I had that downloaded and installed. Did they even read my e-mail? Anyway, if I want further assistance I need to send them my DxDiag. So I did. They'll probably make me jump through a hundred other hoops before they give me a solution that probably won't work. :sad:

I really hope this isn't one of those bugs that effects such a small amount of the game's population that it never gets fixed. I feel like my game is broken right now, and I paid $60 for nothing but heartache. I am going to be thrilled if the upcoming fixes to fix the fixes from patch 1.2 fixes Jorrvaskr, but I am not holding out much hope.

It seems a lot of people are having door crash glitches. Not all of them relating to Jorrvaskr, but door crashes none the less. Maybe there is a blanket fix for all of them. If that's the case, maybe we can hope to see a fix for this issue from Bethesda sooner rather than later.

found a way to fix the issue (well its a workaround) that works for me thou

when you are stuck in a certain location, and cant fasttravel becuz your on a quest, use the Console commands "coc riverwood" -without the quotes
and fasttravel back to your location you need to be, 9/10 times it works now, (ps make sure you safe when you are in a safe place :D
