London Riots

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 11:13 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-14435251 London is an absolute warzone at the moment, I'm disgusted. What started as a peaceful protest escalated into a city-wide riot, I bet 70% of them don't even know what they're rioting about.

I noticed the headlines the last couple days, but haven't read anything. What are they rioting about?

Im not sure how to discuss this without getting severely political. Needless to say, a lot of people are very pissed off about a lot of different things.

Agreed.

Edit: Oh, and all that crap about the police having too much power is an absolute load of nonsense. If they did they'd be able to contain the riots.

They killed him after he shot a officer himself I believe. (The officer didn't die, the bullet hit his radio)

Since no one's yet taken the trouble to actually ask these people why they're rioting (three days of fire now, and all I've heard on the radio or TV are police, politicians and concerned bystanders) I'm gonna withhold my judgement on their causes...

A couple of the officers(or maybe a single officer, sorry can't remember which but it really doesn't matter how many) tried to put the blame on grand theft auto 4.

The article is on IGN.

When I read that, I was like REALLY? It's 2011 and people are still trying to blame video games for the violence in the world and mind you a game that is years old.

The thugs taking part in the riots are using the shooting as an excuse to cause violence and destruction. Many see it as an opportunity to steal from shops thinking they will get away with it, there are som people that have stolen TV's, computer systems, clothing etc and have tried to take advantage of the situation. They are scavengers and should be put down. The police should just take out some shotguns and blow the bloody chavs to halfway to france. Stop [censored] footing around and sort the little yobs out, they have broken the law so their human rights are forfeit (or at least they should be).

God it's things like this that make me embarassed to be English sometimes

Even so, what they've done can't be justified. If they wish to protest then do so peacefully, there's no need for all this burning and looting which has been going on.

Kinda hard to ask questions when they're busying looting and burning everything.

Right? I mean, violence caused a violent protest, which turned into crazy riots, so the next logical step would be to cause even more outrageous violence.

Glad you agree. :flamethrower: You can't be soft with criminals, they should be shown who the law is in the country.... it is not the mob. The police should come down as hard as physically possible. Or can't we do that for fear of hurting the criminals feelings.

And it's people like you who make me ashamed...

But far be it from me to put a stop to the good old British tradition of thinking you're better than other people.

I am better than criminals. I have never broken the law because I know it's wrong. Just like the 99% of pother people in this country that know it is wrong. As far as I am concerened as soon as you break the law, your human rights should be irrelivent in comparison to the rights of those you are commiting the crime against. The law in this country has for too long been on the side of the criminal and that has to change

Yeah becuase the current government has done a great job what with the economy and everything else they like to screw up

I'm very sad to see this. I love London and the English people and hope this calms down soon. Reminds me of Los Angeles in the 90s with the Rodney King trial verdict (only thankfully less deadly so far).

The intricacies of a crime are what make that black and white thinking not work. If I had my car stolen and no one saw, then I stole my car back, I am then a car thief and should be shot? No. My family is starving so I stole some watermelons, should I be killed as well? No. We have a court of law because crimes, like most things in life, aren't as simple as they appear.

It is all getting rather unpleasant. Legitimate protests and grievances are one thing, but wanton destruction and looting are another matter entirely. But overall, it's hard to know what to think since most of the talking heads are trying to make political capital of it one way or another.
