London Riots

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 1:10 am

The rioters have just hit London zoo. Kinda hoping that the animals come out un-harmed and that perhaps some the rioters lose a limb or something...

I swear if any animals get harmed or killed I will go to London and start shooting myself.

I hear the police are in some areas out numbered 20-1.

Why are they rioting?

Because a known gang member was pulled over by the police. He then shot the arresting officer (he didn't die) and then was killed by the officers partner. The family of the criminal held a peaceful protest and then suddenly riots.

Because the majority don't care about what the protest was originally about. There has been looting purely for the act of theft, not due to a morale stance against the police. There is plenty of news footage, showing people walking into a shop picking up a large TV or Computer and simply walking away with it. How is that protesting against anything? It isn't, it is oppotunism plain and simple.

Exactly, I bet that 90% don't even know what they're protesting about. They're just taking advantage of the situation. Anyways, this seems to happen quite frequently in Europe, violent protests. Video after video shows violent European protests, why?

Because videos of people going about their daily business in peace don't make the news?

I'm surprised it's quiet up here in the North East. (I'm a Sunderland lad through and through.)

I'm afraid I agree with Twitch on this one.

I was fairly close to the Los Angeles riots in '92, that is I sat on the roof of my house and watched nearby stores get looted and burned. It was a nightmare and the police were unable to do anything about it. They were called out when everything first started but were called back. On the one hand they were greatly out numbered, on the other was the thought that because the rioters were upset by police action then the presence of law enforcement would inflame them more. If the cops just stayed away then the angry mob would have nowhere to focus thier anger and break up on its own. This is why no cops showed up while that poor truck driver (Reginald Denning? IIRC) was beating to within an inch of his life. He was rescued by some guy in the neighborhood who used bursts from a fire extinguisher to clear the attackers. Then the real riots started and they started spreading, despite pleas from local celeberties and even Rodney King himself to Just get along. It wasn't until Police, Marines and US Army National Guard took the the streets in force did the rioting end. Most rioters were intimidated enough by having assault rifles pointed at them by men in uniform to stop what they were doing.

In the end dozens lost their lives, thousands were injured and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of peoples properties, in some cases their livleyhood, was destroyed. A lot of arrests were made but the majority of the pettier crime went unpunished.

You can usually talk a person down enough to reason with them, but a mob just feeds on itself and you need to find a way to get everyones attention quickly. Waterhoses and tear gas only work if the crowd is small enough, a bigger mob calls for more drastic measures.

I really feel for those in London who are caught up in this current riot.

Not really the same thing. The Arab Spring was for a reason. I am not sure these riots are.

Violence is never good but sometimes that is what is needed to appease the situation. People may not even need to be killed/shot (in fact I would bet on it) but if the army were to turn up with a few tanks and a few rifles most would run and hide under a rock.

Rioters now attacking shops and restraunts in Ealing, West London.

We don't use watercannon except in Northern Ireland. At present they just seem to be getting more police.

In the end dozens lost their lives, thousands were injured and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of peoples properties, in some cases their livleyhood, was destroyed. A lot of arrests were made but the majority of the pettier crime went unpunished.
This is mainly looting I think, no one has lost their lives.

It wasn't until Police, Marines and US Army National Guard took the the streets in force did the rioting end. Most rioters were intimidated enough by having assault rifles pointed at them by men in uniform to stop what they were doing.
There is a major issue with doing that. The army is not trained in riot control. Lets face it, the British Army doesn't have a great record with dealing with protesters. (And we are still having issues due to it)

As said above, the army are not trained in riot control. If a someone with a gun in their hand panics.. boom. 20 people dead.

Plus it sets a really bad precedent.

I don't think the Army can afford tanks any more. I heard they have a couple of old Vauxhall Astras that could be pressed into service, though.

I really must emphasise, no one has lost their life yet. If they keep buring down buildings, especially family homes (some reports from Croydon suggest homes on fire) someone will die. The police are out numbered, maybe the sheer presence of army personnel would be enough (hopefully)

Bloody hell, that's the sort of approach that results in things like the Peterloo Massacre. The armed forces are kept far away from this sort of thing for good reason.

I think the police have got a tough time on their hands. I suspect (and hope) that it'll fizzle out in a few days, though. Shocking behaviour, and not very British at all.

As I said earlier in this thread someone has been shot in the head. Generally people don't survive that.

The police are completly out numbered, they have done nothing because they are unable too. It may well fizzle out, but what if it doesn't?

Maybe it is what Briton needs (although less looting, more political. Burning down homes isn't nice)

Yup. Because you always believe stuff on the internet. Especially when it isn't mentioned on the BBC (and lets face it, someone shot in the head would be)
