Lost, season 6.

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:44 pm

FWIW, I love Lost and can't wait until the premiere. I hate that it's the last season though. The Simpsons and SNL have been on forever, neither has been worth watching in well over a decade but Lost only gets six seasons? I'm not ready to give up Sawyer, Sayid and Ben yet. :cold:

I'm surprised Lost made it this far. I don't even know where the writers get their stuff from.

Umm... have you seen where you are? Oblivion, Morrowind, etc...? Why is Lost so strange and foreign? I love pausing and inspecting my tv screen for potential clues to what the hell's going on. The whispers, the shark's belly, what is that giant foot? I love it all.

I was really getting into the show, much like 24. Then things started getting weird, and some of the changes were too extreme. My main concern is that the writers will keep making more bizarre mysteries, and dodging any actual explanations - like they did in Twin Peaks. It was pretty disappointing to watch a show that was supposed to explain things - and when it's over, it didn't explain anything. Later episodes I'd watch if I happen to come across them, but the excitement isn't there like it used to be. The good ones never last, R.I.P. Farscape.
I guess that's why Stargate has like 20 crappy spinoffs. (What's next, Stargate: Camelot ?)

This season is supposed to be a lot more in tune with the first season. No time traveling and very few flashbacks. Abrams said all our questions about the mythos will not be answered, though, so that's kind of dissapointing.

I'm surprised Lost made it this far. I don't even know where the writers get their stuff from.

They buy it from me.

Yeah, I totally agree. I don't see where people come off saying Lost is just so [censored] crazy and ridiculous. I gotta ask you people have you EVER watched any other television show? Honestly? It's not "AWWWM AH GUD PLZ HALP" hard to understand.

I adore lost <3

I think people who give up mid-season would think it's just bat[censored] insane, but an awful lot of stuff does get explained, and turns out to be fairly mundane (Then again, last season...), so they're missing out.
Cannot wait <3

I finished watching season 1 all the way till season 5 in one long go a few days ago (with, of course, sleeping, eating and bathroom breaks XD). I was going crazy when the last episode of season 5 ended. I MUST KNOW HOW IT CONTINUES! D< *brain melts*

But to be fair, on the other hand a lot of Lost fans think it's the most deep and profound TV programme ever made, which is just... wrong. So there's two sides of the coin for that one.

It's not the show it was when I started watching it, I'll say that. Season one is all about the characters. Season five was just a bunch of stuff happening.

Season five was a bunch of stuff happening (and admittedly, several "Huh?" moments from me) because they knew the series was ending and they wanted to get all of their thoughts out and attempt to answer our questions and tie up loose ends. Unfortunately, it came off messy. It would have been a much better show if they had a few more seasons to let things develop more fluidly but that's what happens when you set a limit on the number of episodes you're going to make before pulling the plug. It still beats being canceled in the middle of everything as tends to happen with nearly every show I like.

Love your avatar, btw. ;)

I really hope they don't restart the timeline, that would be so [censored].

I'm excited that it's going to be over. It's gotten to be so ridiculous and weird that I don't really enjoy it very much, but I still just have to know how it ends, y'know?

Ye I know what you mean, personally if I knew that the current series of Heroes was going to be the last one I would still be watching (just to see how it ends) but as I don't I'm not.

I'll watch it, but only because I've been watching it for so long I actually really want to find out what happens to certain characters - Sawyer, Hurley, Jin and Miles mainly. I still don't like Jack or Kate, and I've actually struggled to find anyone who does. I can't believe the writers can't admit Kate is one of the most poorly-written female characters on TV.

And hey, it can't be as bad as season 5... can it?

I want to find out about those characters too, although I do actually like watching it :P Not so much Hurley though.

Glad to hear it's on this Friday, didn't realise it was.

Messy is definitely the word for it. I loved the first few seasons because you could easily have episodes were nothing really important happened - Sawyer hunts a boar, Jin goes fishing, Hurley and Sawyer find a frog - but just watching the characters interact made it brilliant TV. Now, it's all a bit wham-bam here's your action and your answers but not really much characterisation. Probably my second favourite episode of season 5 was the Miles centric, because again, nothing much happened, and most of the episode involved Miles and Hurley driving places talking to each other. For me, that's what Lost is about - characters, not action.

One thing a lot of people don't realize about Lost (and what makes so many of your alls comments about "oh the writers are running out of material blah blah) is that the writers have known all of the things that happen in all 6 seasons...from season 1. They sat down, and wrote out this ENTIRE thing.
They aren't running out of ideas, the shows not changing, etc, ALL of this was written before the first season was done, and there is much proof on this, as it's stated many times in the special features of the dvds from the writers themselves.

I don't love Lost, but I like it. At this point I'm watching it just because I've seen every episode and feel like I have to watch it as opposed to actually caring about what happens. The best thing this show did was declare an end date and shorten its seasons. Season 1 was great, but Season 2 and 3 had so much filler crap that it was almost unbearable at times. Season 4 and 5 had a much tighter narrative, which really strengthened the show.

Eh? The entire show was planned out from the beginning, there was no "shortening" of the show. It was planned for 6 season from season 1.

I'd love to see a link to prove this. They may have had the overall plot figured out, but I don't believe they said they only wanted to do six seasons from day one.

I seem to recal watching an interview with them early on saying they would only do "six seasons and seven at the most if they decided they didnt have enough time in 6 seasons." I'd link but I cant remember who the interview was with (Sky one? Channel 4 maybe...)

Well that isn't true, for numerous reasons:

- Michael Emerson (ie, Ben) was originally signed on for I think four episodes but after the positive reaction to his Henry Gale character they kept him on. That means potentially no Ben from season 3 onwards.
- The writers wanted to explain Libby's backstory but the actress didn't want to come back, so they scrapped it.
- The writers have supposedly (only hinted really) that Juliet and Sawyer's relationship lasted much longer than it was supposed to following positive reaction to the LaFleur episode.
- Eko was written out of the show after the actor's parents died and he didn't want to live in Hawaii anymore.
- The Jack episode midway through season 3 (the one where he gets his tattoos, and also one of the worst episodes) has been described numerous times as 'stalling for time' because the writers were still negotiating with the studio about an end point for the series.
- Richard was supposed to be main cast in season four but the actor couldn't do it because of other commitments.

And so on. They have however said they know the start and the end point, but I think Carlton Cuse said that 'the path can change on the way'. So they're just as guilty as fiddling with things as other writers are.

I uh, didn't say the entire series in all it's details like a screenplay. They made the general storyline of the series from the beginning. As to what happens. Not every minor detail.
Of coarse some things are going to change over 6 years haha. But I didn't say that specifically. Just the general flow of what happens. They knew how it was going to end.
In an interview with Matthew Fox in the first season dvd special features, he states that the producers and writers know how it ends, and in the 2nd or 3rd, he states that he's the only cast member who does know how it will end.
