Main Quest Discussion

Right. And the specific criticism of the MQ that I was responding to was that it pigeonholes you as the Dragonborn. IMO you are less pigeonholed by Skyrim's opening than you are by Uriel Septim's comments in the Oblivion opening.

Yeah I guess so.

Sorry, I'm not going to read through 5 pages worth, but fetch and carry quests dominating the plot arent new. In Morrowind, there were a ton of quests where you go find a book, or some research notes, trapse across half the island to talk to some informant. As for Oblivion, I avoid the MQ there, but what I did do was much of the same. Plenty of other games have been like this. If it had been nothing but straight combat, people would probably complain that it had no variety.

As for the whole "destiny" bit, Would you rather it be like Bill Lumbergh? "Uh, yeah. So, there's these dragons attacking everywhere. So, if you could go ahead and kill them, that would be great, kay?"

I rather enjoyed the main quest. I like it better than Morrowind's, and the talk with Paarthurnax was one of the best parts of the game.

The next step the Elder Scrolls have to take is to learn from Dark Souls / Zelda and put some unique boss models and puzzles along the main quests. The problem with Morrowind / Oblivion / Skyrim / Fallout is that so much of the assets get re-used all the time, half way through you stop being impressed. There's nothing wrong with having more than 8Gb on a DVD

Well said. I also agree with the other poster who said Fallout New Vegas had better MQ endings. For as many things as Bethesda does well, writing quests and characters does not seem to be their strong suit. It would be nice if they could focus on the gameworld and design elements and subcontract the quest/character writing to the guys at Obsidian.

I disagree they've shown they have the ability to write interesting stories with non MQ quest lines from previous TES games. I'm just convinced that due to economics and the dev cycle that stuff gets rushed and most of their energy goes into making their world without enough energy spent populating it with interesting people and stories.

Chrono Trigger is the most overrated game of all times, and I played it when it came out in the mid 90s. There are many better JRPGs out there; yes, including FF7, which many of you hate.

Chrono Trigger, FFVI, IV and V are kind of sacred to me ^_^, i just cannot judge them objectively cause they were the first rpgs i've played, and i still have some of their musics in my cel phone =x

It's not that bad. I mean it isn't Planescape, NV or Motb level, defenatly, but not bad. The real problem is the lack of choices in the main and other storylines and as others have said not as rewarding at times.

I completely disagree, I think the MQ is actually extremely well done. The main plot isnt really meant to be a choices kind of thing, there is a certain progression of things that must occur. The various factions you deal with show their awesome elements and their incredibly stupid elements. The whole play the way you want is more around how you run around and interact with the world. I admit that i do wish you had a bit more freedom in certain key moments but ultimately I dont have a problem at all with the way the MQ progresses or ends. Especially when you stop looking at the literal gameplay and step back to look at the story/lore aspect.

It isn't the worst questline ever, but it's not the best. If you want to talk about fetch quests, see Two Worlds main quest. There are a lot of questlines that are worse.
