What was the first game any of you played?

Whoa, does "doctors and nurses" count...? Oh, you mean video-games! Okay, let's see. Probably "Saboteur" for the Spectrum 48k (or was it 24k?) back in the day: a keyboard connected to a tape player that connected to a TV.

What is your favorite number?

Number 9, baby!

IF VIDEO GAMES ARN'T ART, then what do you consider mirror's edge? That game is one of my favorite games, I consider it a piece of art..

Mirror's Edge rulz!

I've seen this "games are art" discussion in several forums recently. Look, people have been debating what is or isn't art for thousands of years (literally). So, I don't expect that we'll solve the riddle any time soon. That said, if anyone wants to call games, "art," then they are free to do so. As free, I'd say, as those that don't want to call games, "art." Ultimately, it depends on your definition of the concept, and since this is a very elusive concept, there's bound to be inconsistencies among those definitions.

What do you usually eat for breakfast?
If the Fallout world was real, where would you want to live?
Do you like Monty Python??

Breakfast, what's that?

I'd live in the Fallout Vault that had that social experiment involving hordes of vixens and only a few m... anyhow, next question!

"Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Know what I mean?"

To the devs, and sorry if this has been asked before, who are your favorite authors/what are your favorite books in the speculative fiction (sci-fi and fantasy) genres?

As for nutrition, I make the stinkiest concoctions of fish and spinach in the kitchen (got to have your Omega 3s), which draws numerous comments from Feargus, whose office is near the kitchen. ;) I do the usual - eat small portions every 2-3 hours, and balance out the portions so I'm not getting too much of any one food group (and no carbs later on in the day).

Am I the only one that would LOVE to see an anolog of that drink in NV as a clutter item?! :chaos: Perhaps give it a random effect, 1: it gives you a small boost in energy, 2: it sends you rushing to the nearest bathroom (or something interesting, your the creative director after all!).

Yeah, that was funny to read. Back at Interplay, you could always tell by my waistline at what point I was at during the product cycle. After Planescape Torment (and a doctor visit), I made a promise to myself that I wanted to stay healthy enough to keep designing games as long as possible.

So my usual regimen: Every morning I get up, hop on either the rowing machine or exercise bike for about an hour - if it's the rowing machine, I watch movies (Battlestar Galactica makes any aerobic exercise go by quickly, for example), if it's on the exercise bike, I read the Fallout 3 strat guide, Fallout 3 computer reviews, or play my drunk psychotic PC in Fallout 3 on the Xbox. That usually gets my metabolism up for the day.

Then every other night I work until there's no more creative juices left, then go lifting (free weights/supersets), and then come back and see if I can squeeze any more design work out (endorphins help).

Working out is what I consider to be my "minigame" for the day and I usually find ideas spring to mind while doing aerobics and lifting, so I try to keep a notepad handy.

Good sir, I wish I had your means and dedication to stay true to video games and sci fi whilst exercising. In my defense, it is rather hard to effectively carry a working TV and Xbox 360 while running 4km.

I've gotten away from genre fiction over the last decade or so, but any time Kim Stanley Robinson writes a book, I'll be the first in line to buy it.

Just out of curiousity... (assuming that quite a few from F1 & F2 are in on this) Was coming up with item descriptions a group effort or was one person assigned to that role. If the former was the case, was that fun? :'D

Just for some potential in-office fighting rings we can bet on;

If you were stuck on an island, and could only bring one co-worker, who would you bring?

You're supposed to be getting to know the Developers who are developing Fallout New Vegas, look towards Star Wars communities for Star Wars information.

But answering your previous question, there is an MMO of the Old Republic that looks sixy.

Considering what the Great War did to the world and the US, it seems likely the survivors had to adopt both a 'kill or be killed' attitude as well as a 'cooperate and rebuild or die' mentality.
With this in mind, have you got inspirations from historical man-made "disasters", like the sack of Jerusalem 1099, the sack of Magdeburg 1632 or the battle of Stalingrad in 1942-43 and their aftermaths for any of the social aspects, to take a few examples?
Hel, the 30-years war was arguably equivalent to post-apocalyptic for the civilians in many cases, aside from the radiation...
Or to put it another way: What inspired/inspires the social part of the worldbuilding? Are you all digging from the same sources, or coming up with widely different options and sources in the team?

Oh, and did the radiation cause any mutations in any plants like it did for people and animals? (Not meant to be New Vegas specific, a simple 'yes' or 'no' would suffice. :) )
Hmm, I suppose Harold and Bob the tree might count as one example.

I guess this is more oriented towards writers in the Dev team.

What exactly triggers the inspiration and thought in your work?

Anything and everything can be an inspiration; however my favorite place to get inspiration is from my co-workers. Some of my favorite content came from bouncing ideas back and forth with people.

How ecstatic were you guys when you first found out that you guys were going to develop the next fallout game?

On a exponential scale from 1 to 10, somewhere around 93.

Is there any dev called George? I've never heard of a game developer who shares my name. :(

There are more Georges than Akils.

to all the dev's watching, do you like cheese? If so, what's your favourite?

Hmm, I'm a big fan of gorgonzola. Especially in a cheese sauce over some gnocchi.

For someone that enjoys math, what would be the best spot in the gaming industry?

Like Frank said earlier, either a systems designer or a programmer.

What was the first game any of you played?

Man, I'm not sure. I've been playing games longer than I can remember... Lode Runner maybe? Perhaps Zork?

Are you Firefly fans?

I enjoyed the series as well as the movie. I'm a fan, but I'm not a deep follower of the series.

I asked this question previously but I suppose no one really had a response.

How would you move into a Video Game development team as a writer? I'm genuinely interested in the career.

It has come up a couple times on Obsidian's forums and our devs have responded over there. To avoid cutting and pasting large amounts of text over here, I'll just link you to the relevant threads:

Does work stop when you exit the door?

Coming from working in the unreal editor and other FPS editors like radiant and hammer, I often find myself visualizing environments in BSP and static mesh as I'm walking around. It's kind of hard for me to turn off dev mode at this point. I'll even see a flickering light, escalator, etc. and start thinking about different ways to script it. *facepalm*

Have any of you been to Alaska? If not, would you like to visit here? If so would you rather visit in the summer or winter?

What is your favorite kind of cookie? Favorite pizza? Favorite fast food place?
