Metal Thread

Maybe http://www.disturbed1.com/ should be on this list.
I mean, I don't really consider them to be metal, but most people do, so
And they are pretty kick-ass :D

Not metal. Read the rules please.

Have you guys heard http://www.myspace.com/gardenwallonline, who, naming themselves after the band that eventually became the legendary progressive rock band Genesis, started out as a neo-prog band and themselves eventually became and avant-garde metal band? Well, if you haven't, maybe you should. Their old school prog rock heritage is still evident, especially when the vocalist pulls off one of his nearly perfect Peter Hammill impersonations. My main complaint with the band is that they seem to have a sort of "Opeth-syndrome" in their song forms; often meandering between unrelated sections or repeating sections verbatim for an undue period of time perhaps for the sole purpose of increasing song length (gotta stay "prog", right?). However, also like Opeth, their limping forms are based on unique, interesting, and solidly performed material. Flawed but fascinating.

Sounds very interesting. I'll check them out.

I wonder how many iterations of this thread we've burned through...

It wasn't around as a thread on its own when I joined the forums but as far as I remember it popped up early '05, if that helps.

Also, note to self; must buy more BTBAM.

Yeah, Colors is the one I have and it's [censored] brilliant. I hear The Great Misdirect isn't nearly as good though, yea or nay?

I thought it was better, but its all according to opinion. To me Colors was a masterpiece and Between the Buried and Me is one of very few bands that can write a masterpiece and then with their next album put it completely to shame with an even greater masterpiece. To me they pretty much took the style of Colors and perfected it. Again, just my opinion.

I have a feeling that will be a long list. Maybe I'll do one too.

45 albums and counting in the last few weeks...

So, does anyone else prefer Inquisition's Thrash Metal material over their Black Metal? I love Anxious Death and Forever Under, and Incense of Rest is decent, but I find the vocals for the newer material to be quite annoying.

I prefer the newer stuff. The vocals are different, but not bad.

I have the Live Agalloch DVD and it is quite amazing. I recommend you get it if you like Agalloch even the slightest.

I actually called my girlfriend, and told her that it would make a good birthday present (which means I probably will get it).

It could be the longest running thread on the boards...haha. We used to burn through them quicker when me and Warggorath(sp?) complained about stupid prices on eBay.

This makes me feel slightly special. I know it doesn't appear to make sense but I remember starting the first "/V\ETAL THREAD" :mohawk:

*gets banned*

in other news.. Gorgoroth's Under the Sign of Hell is the perfect 'pure black metal' album. amirite?

I love Infernus and all but Ov Hell > Gorgoroth.. not that either are exceptional really >_>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPnyY1A9gjI is awesome. Lunar Strain is their best album(and the only good one to, The Jester Race is decent though).

Whoa, there's a blast from the past. I also remember VilleQ and his W.A.S.P. addiction.

On the subject of Gorgoroth, Infernus' new revamp of Gorgoroth totally beats all their past records. Pest, Pest, and more Pest.

EDIT: lolwut thought that word was censored

VilleQ was a nice fella. Sometimes I wonder what happened to him...

I'd say The Jesters Race is their best. Lunar Strain is really good though. But The Jesters Race is just amazing to me, so good.

The Great Misdirect is definitely on the same level as Colors. Alaska is probably my favourite though, it's just perfect. Their cover album is also pretty fun. They do some great King Crimson and Queen covers, eventhough the best part is hearing them cover Motley Crue.

For me, its a toss up between Colors and Alaska. I think Colors was the more rounded album but Alaska has my 3 fave BTBAM tracks on it (Selkies, Alaska and Backwards Marathon). The Great Misdirect was brilliant but for me it just didn't hit the heights of Colors and Alaska, although i must say it is growing on me. Still, i dont think it has as many memorable moments as the last 2. Also, the covers album is great. I love their version of Bicycle Race by Queen.

Since im in the Metal thread i though i'd ask for some recommendations. Ive been looking for some Thrash lately, i think ive exhausted all the larger bands like Slayer, Kreator and Megadeth, and the only newer band that really do it for me are Municipal Waste. Any recommendations for less popular old skool thrash? Cheers.

By the way I just updated the OP with all bands being discussed along with links and other fun stuff. Enjoy. I'll slowly be updating the OP with more links to videos and such, so be patient. Let me know if there is anything else in particular you would like me to put in the OP.

Listening to this Ov Hell stuff right now. The lineup turned me off but I was surprised it's not complete [censored]. Still nothing I would waste money on.

I'd throw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BoDlQr-EPE beside Gorgoroth in the OP. I think I'm the only one into it at the moment. :P

Yesss you rule. Also, Watchtower's Control and Resistance is [censored] crucial. I also highly recommend Mekong Delta in general, and I'm currently checking Toxik out on youtube, and they are blowing my mind.
