We got played some Sabaton in history once (long story), some kid in my class likes them, but it was the first time I'd heard them. God their cringeworthy. Not bvad, just not something I'd listen to within 100 meters of anyone else.

<_< You have obviously been listing to the wrong tacks (Having said that, I am moving away from Sabaton and to Falconer as the bad I continuously listen too).

I tried to do small reviews...but it was way to arduous, so I'm just going to list the stuff I've grabbed recently with some youtube links and a short description.

  • Ritual Carnage - The Highest Law - These are getting increasingly hard to find, and are without question worth the trouble, as this is some of the best death/thrash out there.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YgbUqbJgHk
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md3T2rwpgPc

  • The Devil's Blood - The Time Of No Time Evermore - Not technically metal, more occult rock, but definitely not without some heaviness. These guys are probably my favorite non-metal band still going today. Great stuff.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBiPoh6An7A
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFDDcrcL9vc

  • The Devil's Blood - Come Reap - Not technically metal, more occult rock, but definitely not without some heaviness. These guys are probably my favorite non-metal band still going today. Great stuff. This is the EP before The Time of No Time Evermore.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjcBgl40dGQ
    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=12B38191A9F9678F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&v=V0xjlwWrDbk (Roky Erikson cover)

  • Poison - Further Down Into The Abyss - First wave black metal from Germany. Includes nearly their entire recorded output.
    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F941BF6F05F369D0&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&v=_Rnzq36UXGQ
    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F941BF6F05F369D0&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&v=hEuQfc7Dzeg

  • Mystifier - Baphometic Goat Worship - 6 LP box set that includes literally everything that the band recorded before 1993; Tormenting The Holy Trinity, The Evil Ascension Returns, Aleister Crowley, Wicca, Goetia, and some live stuff. Christ crushing black death from Brazil.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otq6mOcrfiM

  • Mystifier - Profanus - Mystifier's latest album from 2001. Still Christ crushing black metal, still evil as hell. No vids for this album...

  • Convulse - World Without God - Classic Finnish death metal here. This is the Relapse re-release of this 1992 masterpiece. Includes their Resuscitation of Evilness demo.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEqE9MgVzJg
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT5pbBahj38

  • Sarcofago - INRI - One of the most important black metal albums of all time. These guys pretty much shaped the face of black metal...for better or for worse.
    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=2FD0156B9D847DD6&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&v=vzmZ3DjgRNI
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9onMTrJh3o

  • Vulcano - Bloody Vengence - The first extreme metal band in South America. This 1986 gem is their best output. Unlike Sarcofago, these guys actually had intelligent lyrics and researched the occult themes found in their albums.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUYE3924Zgo
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIaUnu3eltQ

  • Devastator - The End - The best modern black/thrash band in my opinion. One of the only modern thrash bands that doesn't make me want to retch.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9v9RCJ6X-U

  • Escalation Anger / Schnauzer - Split - I got this for the Schnauzer tracks, not that Escalation Anger is band, but I'd never heard them up until I got this. Schnauzer play their brand of "scrap metal", and Escalation Anger play a pretty angry style of more thrashy crossover. No vids for this one...

  • Rites of Thy Degringolade - Totality - I love this band, pretty much anything Paulus Kressman is involved with is destined to rule. Black/death from Canada. I'd love to link to videos, but there are none. Take my word for it, if you like black/death, you need to hear this.

  • Treblinka - Bootleg 2xCD - Everything Treblinka ever recorded, plus a live show. Everyone should be familiar with these guys, and if not, you should be familiar with them after they changed their name to Tiamat. Fantastic black/death from Sweden.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYtkqxinl5M
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQL4H0bXs-A

  • Mystifier - The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here - This was the next release after Goetia, and one of the songs made it's way to the Gummo soundtrack. Some strange singing vocals where introduced here...and they took a bit to get used to.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvlYwbNJ_oo
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqZ6C0wDk1I

  • Mystifier - The Fourth Evil Calling From The Abyss - A collection of covers and EP tracks from this Brazilian black metal band.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKsDEbIW4i0 (Poison(Ger) cover)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lY72GT7PF8

  • Blasphemy - Gods of War / Blood on the Altar - The pioneers of war metal. This album is incredible from start to finish. If you have no idea what this is, and are reading this thread, you have failed spectacularly at metal. This is a CD copy to supplement my LP.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_smKZNmU2iU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m1FhUg7Z2g

  • Jesus F***ing Christ - Life's Hateful Seed - 2nd full length from this hardcoe band...this album seems some metallic elements start to seep in. Really, really negative stuff. Features Dave Edwardson of Neurosis.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrxeyx6sGRg

  • Funerot - Then You F***ing Die Man - Really punkish crossover...which is a change from the pure thrash found on their earlier albums. If you dig stuff like The Accused, you'll love this. No vids, as this just came out, and no one has bothered to upload any.

  • Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom - The pioneers of war metal. This album is incredible from start to finish. If you have no idea what this is, and are reading this thread, you have failed spectacularly at metal. This is a CD copy to supplement my LP. This is one of the best metal albums to EVER be released.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjPiDg9_kfw
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lBJGpsLIl8

  • Midnight - Complete and Total F***ing Midnight - Blackened speed metal. Totally catch stuff. I traded my original copy, but like this so much that I had to reacquire it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQbREs8p-KU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HpkbOFRCS8

  • Houwitser - Embrace Damnation Dutch death metal with members of Sinister. This is pretty brutal stuff, but not in the NYDM Slam/Death kind of way. Great riffs.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMwKnmHnldI

  • Morbosidad - Profana La Cruz del Nazareno - Morboso Metal. Black/Death/Thrash from Mexico. Pretty cool stuff. Great artwork.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRLKYDnJUg8
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfxoprmR3wg

  • Kerasphorus - Cloven Hooves at the Holocaust Dawn - So far the best album of 2010. This EP slays. Features P. Helmkamp (Angelcorpse, Order From Chaos, Revenge) and J. Read (Conqueror, Revenge). This just came out a week or two ago, so no videos yet.

  • Blasphemophagher - ...for Chaos, Obscurity, and Desolation - Another album that came out this year. Italian war metal. Real catchy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSXlEn4bPL0

  • V/A - NWN Fest Volume 1 - Compilation with unreleased tunes from Blasphemophagher, Revenge, Villians, Midnight, and more.

  • Devastator - Infernal Devastation - The more black metal side of Devastator. Still pretty damn thrashy though. This is a demo that is over 5 years old and limited to 500 copies...so I wasn't surprised when I couldn't find anything from it on youtube.

  • Ayat - Al Nabi Moujrem Moughtaseb Dajjal - Scathing, hateful black metal from Lebanon. Completely uncompromising and devastating.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9_u-F1gMhM

  • Houwitser - Death, But Not Buried - The first LP from this dutch death metal band. This is their best record in my opinion.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOFLSKZQBRs

  • Inner Thought - Worldly Seperation - Canadian industrial death metal band. Features 2 members of Canadian death/thrash legends Slaughter.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wydOf-4Skc

  • Blasphemophagher - Nuclear Empire of Apocalypse - Italian war metal. Real catchy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssD8pf6_sJ8
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKseHt6lDIk

  • Cosmic Atrophy - Codex Incubo - By now everyone who is into death metal is familiar with Demilich, well these guys decided to worship at the altar of Demilich, and in doing so have created an excellent piece of death metal.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTG-MGXGQoE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0pN3nd_0lQ

  • Anasarca - Godmachine / Ouija - Riding Into the Funeral Paths - The pairing on this double CD makes no sense. Anasarca are a fantastic mid/late 90's death metal band, where Ouija is a decent but not spectacular 2nd wave black metal band. Guess which of these bands I purchased this for?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rICqI4V-F_U
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Muv4GUs_rxs

  • Dehumanized - Prophecies Foretold - NYDM. Some pretty brutal stuff.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJgNIUswcg

  • Anasarca - Moribund - 2nd album from the German death metal machine that is Anasarca. Excellent follow up to Godmachine. All of the lyrics where penned by death row inmates.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzD1-PWnoIQ

  • Sinister - Cross the Styx / Diabolical Summoning - Don't know why I didn't own this before, guess it's sort of hard to find until recently. First two albums from this essential Dutch death metal act.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKHYUqVcJbY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6a3iwofSI8

  • Ayat - Six Years of Dormant Hatred - Filthy, hateful, uncompromising black metal from Lebanon. Great. Devastating.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2HM71E-tyw
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L5M1yRTypE

  • Gurkkhas - Engraved in Blood, Flesh, and Souls - I have the second Gurkkhas album, and figured I'd never find this one...I did. It rules. No vids.

  • Yogth Sothoth - Abominations of the Nebulah Mortiis - Brutal Lovecraft inspired death metal.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pc9BJtzdr8
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_AoAEdD8Zs

  • Yogth Sothoth - The Dark Waters are Shaken - Earlier EP from this brutal Lovecraft inspired death metal band. No vids from this EP.

  • Sepsism - Distorting The Mortal Visage - Brutal death metal from California. I have had the previous two CDs for some time now...and didn't even know this had come out.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkROcmeEeLE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez7Pw1Tmu2k

  • Criminal Element - Guilty As Charged - Super catchy death metal featuring members of Suffocation and Dying Fetus.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv8ouKxUtlc
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVDgqg1fFoU

  • Demoncy - Joined In Darkness - US black metal.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lahtezd7_ok
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgJ34E51iYc

  • Embalmer - Promo 2009 - 2009 demo release from this legendary USBDM band. One of my favorite death metal bands ever. No vids.

  • Deiphago - Filipino Antichrist - War metal from the Philippines, as if the title didn't give that away. Pretty raw and dirty stuff.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTy8bH3-IDY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtFL0KAYEXM

  • Mortuary Draqe - Into The Draqe / All Witches Dance - This is a band that everyone should know, but doesn't. Great early Italian black metal.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YWawCK1L7w
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAZeh4RVNVI

  • Diocletian - Doom Cult - One of my favorite records of last year. This will be a classic one day.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfLE6mfEy9U

  • Mace - Process of Elimination / The Evil in Good - Both Mace LPs on one CD. Mace was a very strange crossover metal band from the early/mid 80's. Great stuff.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZbGTqslh7U (Evil in Good)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL0LDrw2gDc (The Process of Elimination)

  • Rippikoulu - Musta Seremonia - Finnish death metal legends. 2nd demo. Total atmospheric death metal. Grabbed this on vinyl.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik4oNGK9cBE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1xhACwiNEI

  • GISM - Detestation - Japanese hardcoe punk with a lot of metal qualities. This LP is near impossible to find. I scored a super limited bootleg repress of this.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SObdaV2RSTo
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSyYr1ZWm1Y

  • Pan-thy-monium - Dawn & Dream II The Crypt is easily one of the best labels going these days, and they focus entirely on re-releasing classic albums. Their vinyls are WAY above average as far as quality is concerned. I scored this as a pre-order from them. Pan-thy-monium is an early Swedish death metal band, that definitely pushed the envelope quite a bit.

I got the Mystifier box from NWN! for about 60 bucks after shipping. Worth every penny.

The GISM is something I've been looking for for years. Even the bootlegs of this album are generally stupidly expensive.

Mastodon were fantastic last night, they played the full Crack the Skye album and a number of other songs (about 7 I think) but I am knackered now. I've had 5 hours sleep in the past two days and I'm just aching all over at the moment.

Totimoshi (the support band) were quite decent too, but nothing spectacular.

In other news, my friends who live in Rugby are supporting Akercocke in June/July (not sure which).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enuIUV8dmXA We had a headliner show a couple weeks ago and a buddy of mine recorded a video of one of our songs. The first minute or so is our bassist/second vocalist talking becuase we had to plug the fact that we recorded at a studio which makes you vaguely legit in my local scene.

Anyway, our stuff is fairly metal, there's a bit of a core vibe but it's basically the result of a bunch of metalheads trying to put on a decent show with a heavily hardcoe scene. It's also really noisy becuase his camera isn't amazing so you can't hear half of it, or really see me becuase I'm on the far side (shorter hair, PRS). I do lead guitar in this song though, so the tapping riff/verses is me, I have a solo at 5:12 from what you can hear of it. There's a pro recording of this song, but it's not finished being mixed, however there's a preview on our http://www.myspace.com/tomorrowsmartyr which is linked on the video as well.

Any feedback would be awesome!

Yeah, saw them last night, and they were [censored] ace.

They played as far as I can remember (in order):

Crack the Skye back to back in its entirety ([censored] epic), then a bit of an 'intermission', then into Circle of Sysquatch, then Aqua Dementia, then March of the Fire Ants, then a song from Remission I couldn't remember, then Iron Tusk, then Crusher Destroyer. Usually I expect a bit of crowd interaction but the way they did it - segue-ing into every song - was absolutely stunning, and it goes to show how tight they are live. And yeah I agree, the support band were okay I suppose. I wasn't really paying attention.

Crack the Skye is amazing. So much better than Blood Mountain and Leviathan (to me anyway), not a bad song on it. They did that, then two off BM (Wolf is Loose as one, can't remember the other), 2 off Leviathan, 2 off Remission, back to Leviathan and finished with March of the Fire Ants so I was well chuffed. I'm not a massive fan of the Leviathan and Blood Mountain albums, but I do love Remission and Crack the Skye (March of the Fire Ants being my favourite song). Absolutely no crowd-interaction though which was unusual, but it was well done (I'm guessing they had the screen at the back at the one you went to as well, showing album covers during the last bit)

Where did you see them last night? I always thought you lived in Manchester.

I dunno, I love all four of their albums (not gonna include Lifesblood) but I was surprised that the crowd went a lot more nuts for the older stuff than Crack the Skye. Seriously, when the opening drum riff of Iron Tusk hit the place went [censored] mental, it was ace. To be honest though I expected way more off Blood Mountain, even just the singles as well, plus they didn't play Blood and Thunder which I reckoned would be an absolute shoo-in. Still, I'm not disappointed, it was a fantastic gig, but the song choices weren't what I really expected.

And yeah I do, but I'm at uni in Nottingham and they were playing at Rock City, so no need to go to the Manchester gig :)

Setlist for Mastodon sounds pretty much the same as their last tour, so I'm glad I didn't miss anything this time round. When we saw them I think it was Crack the Skye, the Wolf is Loose, Capillarian Quest, Bladecatcher (I was so happy about this), another BM song and then four tracks off Leviathan (including Iron Tusk but not Blood and Thunder) finishing with March of the Fire Ants. Which was the track people went most mental for - I got hurt...

Plus we got Valient Thorr supporting :)

My friend went to the Manchester show this time round, although she was clealy too drunk to remember the setlist right when she told me the other day 'cause her recollection of it is totally different from yours, but she did the same as you Elendiir - hardly any sleep and died afterwards :P

I'll wait for another album before I see them again. Unless they end up playing Sonisphere or Download and I end up going, anyway...

I'll wait for another album before I see them again. Unless they end up playing Sonisphere or Download and I end up going, anyway...

Nah, the setlist for the one I went to was slightly different to what Jobasha saw. I just can't remember them exactly. All I remember is after CtS, they played the Wolf is Loose, a couple more of MB, 2 of Leviathan and 3 off Remission. Finished with March of the Fire Ants. My memory is horrible unfortunately, so I can't give you much else, I just know it wasn't like the Nottingham one. I think they went back to BM then finished with March of the Fire Ants though. All I know is they didn't play Colony of Birchmen and Blood and Thunder. If I could be arsed, I'd skip through the tracks quickly and probably be able to tell you.

However, I'm really, really lazy...

EDIT:

Also, the line-up (so far) for both Download and Sonisphere look abysmal - I really wouldn't waste my money.*

*Then again, you might like stuff like Aerosmith, ACDC etc.

Thats an amazing collection man.

You should see the stuff he's selling. I'm going to put some of it up on ebay tomorrow, then another batch the following Friday, rinse, repeat until it's all gone. I'll post links here to the auctions...some of this stuff is ridiculously rare...

If I went to Download it'd just be for the Saturday. And the Sonisphere lineup includes Iggy and Alice Cooper, so I'd be happy even if there were no more bands added :P

Wasn't going to, but the lineup's getting better so we'll see. Probably will if friends do - mostly for Bloodbath, Gojira and GWAR, although Obituary, Amorphis and Heaven and Hell should be fun too...

EDIT: Still in the air about Hellfest, too...

I might go to Metalcamp (Immortal + Manowar :D) this year. The idea of being by a lake with a lot of fat sweaty metalheads doesn't sound riveting, but my Mum's found a holiday home about ten miles away from the festival. If not 'll go to Sonisphere and Glastonbury instead (already going to Glastonbury, Metalcamp/Sonisphere is the decision). If I go to Sonisphere I'll go to metalcamp next year.
