Metal Thread

A message concerning the rules:

Hi! Welcome to the new improved Metal Thread. We - the thread regulars - have had a bad reputation in the past due not only to the common perception of metal music (Its just shouty music for angry people!) but due to the supposed elitist way in which we've treated people wanting to discuss other forms of music. The thread became increasingly problematic recently and the moderators stepped in temporarily closing the thread and consulting with a few of the regulars to get some clearer, fairer rules that will hopefully cut down on both inflammatory and chatty behaviour in the thread. We're not nasty people, and though the way we treat newcomers and even each other can seem mean, its all in good fun in the end.

For those of you who held a negative opinion of the thread in the past, we'd like to start a fresh page and invite you back. The rules are not changing; we never planned to allow the discussion of other forms of music in this thread (for the reason that too generalized a discussion leads to a lack of focus and interesting discussion) but now that they're clearer to both regulars and newcomers we can try to ensure less confusion and hard feelings.

To the regulars, there are a few changes we'll have to make for the thread to continue. Chatty off topic talk will have to be cut down, we'll have to be accommodating to newcomers, and we'll have to stick to the rules when people come into the thread discussing off-topic material; don't flame them, ignore them and report them. These rules are the forum rules as a whole and are non-negotiable with the moderators , so whether we like it or not I'm afraid we have no choice as to whether or not to stick to them.

Finally, for those of you not interested in the music we discuss, its simple, don't post. There is no stipulation in the terms and conditions of the forum that state you should be allowed to post in any thread whether the subject matter interests you or not. If you'd like to learn with an open mind about the music we listen to then by all means ask for recommendations and tell us what you thought of them , there are a couple of regulars in the thread who got into the music through recommendations from others , and I for one have discovered a lot of new music in the past through this thread, but if you still don't like it there are plenty of other threads you might enjoy posting in.

The regulars who contributed to these new rules are Herr Braunstein, MutantPenguin and Waspinator. We're taking some degree of responsibility for enforcing the rules and if you have any questions about them, PM one of us. We'd also like to thank summer and Dogsbody for their help.

I know this was a long post to read, but after a few iterations of the thread we can get rid of this bit at the start at the start once everyone understands the issue with the clarified rules here.

And now the rules of the thread:

The Metal Thread is for discussion of metal. Nu-metal (Slipknot, KoRn, Rage Against the Machine etc.) is not metal. Neither are hardcoe nor metalcore (Atreyu, Killswitch Engage, Norma Jean, Avenged Sevenfold, older Trivium etc.). Industrial bands like Rammstein, NIN, Deathstars and Ministry are off-limits.
Bands that contributed to the rise of metal but are not metal themselves (Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple) are also off-limits. Other bands to avoid posting about: Tool, System of a Down, Marilyn Manson.

To avoid confusion and perhaps a more hostile environment, if you're not certain whether a certain band gets the green light or not, you can always PM one of the regulars. If you don't understand why certain music is not metal, then try PMing one of us to ask about that too.
This will avoid what happened a lot of times in the old thread, and avoid clogging up the thread with complaints about the rules. The regulars are a good source of information about the thread.

What we don't appreciate is people coming into the thread with the intention to cause trouble. Jokes like my favourite kind is aluminium! It's just shouting and loud music and similar will be reported.

Thanks for sticking to these rules!

I'm going to try something a little different this time around with the thread. I'll be keeping track of all the bands being discussed in this particular thread and editing the OP with links for all the bands. That way new people to the thread can see whats being discussed at a glance and so we have central location for links so we dont have to search the whole thread. Also you may have noticed I put a link to the previous thread to make it easy to find. Just trying to keep things organized and easy for all the regulars here. If you guys like the idea and find it useful I'll keep doing it for each thread or if someone else starts the new thread they can do it. Thoughts? Other ideas?

I wonder how many iterations of this thread we've burned through...

I have no idea, a lot? This thread was going before I joined the forum in 2005. It seems we go through one every 3-4 weeks.

It could be the longest running thread on the boards...haha. We used to burn through them quicker when me and Warggorath(sp?) complained about stupid prices on eBay.

I haven't seen him around lately.

By the way, did you ever find a reasonable place to buy those Rudra albums?

I've been listening to the Sonata Arctica CDs I got for Christmas and now I'm looking for a different power metal band that sounds like them. Any recommendations?

In flames didn't really have a lot of cash back when they first started out, so they don't really have a lot of music videos for their old stuff. This isn't the official video, rather a fan made one. Cool, IMO, but not an official In Flames video. It oddly fits though.
And I mean..I don't really like a lot of death metal, more metal and rock, but I'll be god damned if The Jesters Race isn't one of the most amazing sounds that have ever touched my ears. :celebration:
The composition is just amazing.

No, I sort of gave up looking...I've picked up like 30+ cds in the past 2 weeks...so I'm on a spending hiatus for a bit now.

Yeah, they are defiantly a band I will look into. I've listened to a couple of other songs on Youtube by them and they have the kind of melody I like in metal.

Maybe try Kamelot.

They are actually the band that first got me into Sonata Arctica via related video on Youtube. But I haven't listened to them in awhile and probably should check out the two CDs of theirs that I have not already listened to.

One of these days I'll do one of my "things I've picked up" posts and list all of them at once with links, descriptions, and all that crap.

When I first started using these forums the Metal Thread was up to 180 threads (they actually put the thread number in the description). It got to 200 and something and then it stopped appearing.

In answer to your question, a bloody long time!

I have the same problem. Although I dont burn through my cash as fast as most people here I think. But then, I'm pretty picky, and I also dislike most Death and Black Metal, which seems to be most of the stuff discussed here :meh:

So I was popping around Youtube looking for clips from Agalloch's DVD, and found a video for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCAsN09ZAzE. Excited, I started watching it, only to find that roughly
half of the 9 minute song was edited out, and even the "Special Extended" version isn't complete. I normally dont pay attention to Youtube comments, but there is one that I agree with:

There was no need for the label to butcher it so badly for the video. i mean anyone that doesnt have the attention span to the full 9 and a half minute song isnt very likely to have even heard of Agalloch.

So, does anyone else prefer Inquisition's Thrash Metal material over their Black Metal? I love Anxious Death and Forever Under, and Incense of Rest is decent, but I find the vocals for the newer material to be quite annoying.

It's probably because of the sheer amount of bands to discuss. When you look at the Metal Archives by Genre, there are over 20,000 Death Metal bands, and like 18,000 Black Metal. Almost every other genre has less than even 10,000.

Yeah the black and white kind of put me off at first, but I suppose its supposed to add to the atmosphere of their music. Other than that and a few places where they did a bad job of syncing the audio and video, it was very good. And yes they definitely are good at what they do. I am really looking forward to a new album from them this year.

I hear they burn and smoke wood and stuff and bang on deer skulls. Definitely a unique experience to see them live.

Maybe http://www.disturbed1.com/ should be on this list.
I mean, I don't really consider them to be metal, but most people do, so
And they are pretty kick-ass :D

Have you guys heard http://www.myspace.com/gardenwallonline, who, naming themselves after the band that eventually became the legendary progressive rock band Genesis, started out as a neo-prog band and themselves eventually became and avant-garde metal band? Well, if you haven't, maybe you should. Their old school prog rock heritage is still evident, especially when the vocalist pulls off one of his nearly perfect Peter Hammill impersonations. My main complaint with the band is that they seem to have a sort of "Opeth-syndrome" in their song forms; often meandering between unrelated sections or repeating sections verbatim for an undue period of time perhaps for the sole purpose of increasing song length (gotta stay "prog", right?). However, also like Opeth, their limping forms are based on unique, interesting, and solidly performed material. Flawed but fascinating.
