Example:

A lot of independent merchants do trading with the Legion purely because nobody would dare mess with Legion traders.

Being weak doesn't make the NCR "evil" and being strong doesn't make the Legion "good" though. The Legion's strength is simply more convenient for traders.

I thought this hole topic was trying to argue that neither side is good or evil.

I think to try and justify the NCRs or Legions actions sometimes is just not possible, you could make your own logic to defend it, but it doesnt change the fact that some of their actions knock the moral compass into a seizure.

I think that the grey shades of morality are the choices of the character, rather than simply who do you side with. I've already made a couple of decisions that I just don't feel right over, although I haven't seen any 'bad' consequences yet.

As far as I can see:

CL: Psychopaths.
NCR: Empire builders (amoral).
BoS: Xenophobes.
The Kings: Heart is in the right place, but Elvis has left the building kiddies.
Followers: Heart is in the right place, naive, cute guards though.

Edit:

Actually, if we consider that Rome itself wasted an estimated 2 million human lives in the colliseum, the CL is pretty spot on.

CL should be empire builders as well. Caesar's ultimate goal is to unite all people so there is no war. Basically one large empire.

The ending to that quest pissed me off because of how wrong (in my opinion) it was. :/

Spoiler
Some things you should never say to a man especially when hes holding a military grade rifle at your chest.

Dumby deserved it. And he was a cheating snake anyways preying on 'down on their luck casino losers'.

CL is still obviously the more evil of the two.

NCR is more like-heart in the right place, but to strung thin to accomplish its goals.

if the Caesers legion wasnt attacking and killing NCR troops and overtaking settlments, the NCR could focus on actually helping people instead of using all recourses on fighting

"helping"

You mean annexing the towns and forcing their rules and taxes on them? You know if the town refuses it'll be taken by force, right? They'll have no choice.

The only difference I can see between the NCR and the Legion is that the Legion uses slavery.

Ending war with a bunch of blood thirsty spear chuckers in football gear? I scoff at the notion.

Talk to him. That's his goal. Uniting to end war. I think the inscription on the Legion denarius even says "peace through war."

Does house say this in game? cause that would be something I can picture him saying.

the Pro CL for ending for ever settlement basically ends with it being destroyed or suffering slavery.

while most NCR endings for the settlements end with them being frustrated with taxes, but gaining increased trade and security thanks to the NCR affiliation

Nope, those are just my personal feelings on the matter. He may try to claim he is doing a world of good, but Arcade Gannon says it best when he essentially says Caesar is another good guy gone bad.

So both sides force them to lose their independence?

You can't guarantee increased security, either. Look how hard it is for the NCR to protect themselves already. How can they promise to protect new towns they force their will upon?

Towns with the CL get increased protection as well. Guaranteed protection.

I'm not trying to write the Legion off as the good guys, here. I'm just saying they're really not that different from the NCR when it comes down to it.

The choice is pretty clear IMO.

House: is a megalomaniac that potentially could save mankind by ushering in an era of technological and scientific advancement. Thing is he could have done this over the course of 200 years but didn't. Instead he worked the angle that would bring him power and caps. Sure, he and the story tell a tale of magnanimous philanthropy and some quick thinking to keep New Vegas a "Free City" but all that really meant is free from the NCR.

NCR: System of Laws that allow for choices to be made and give a certain autonomy of the individual under collective law. Both good and evil can flourish but the system itself discourages ignoble behavior.

C's Legions: Forced Nobility. While stating they are civilizing the world they exhibit the utmost barbarism. Organized barbarism is still barbarism.

Both House and CL are really only choices if one thinks or believes that without their leadership mankind would be doomed to extinction. In which case it would be a difficult choice... Not going into that though.

I am constantly impressed with the consequences of many of the quests. This game definitely has the "shades of gray" mentality more so than any other game I have played recently. The main faction quests are perhaps less so, with the Legion being the most obviously "bad", but certainly many side quests are more ambiguous.

I have played a few different characters so I am trying different solutions to quests to find the "best" way to complete quests, and there are very few that actually have a good solution that everyone benefits from..

House actually does usher in that advancement. It's in an ending slide.

I think the problem is just that there's not enough dialogue relating to CL.

Raul makes them seem alright. (well then again he doesn't hate anyone either) Theres got to be atleast 6 times as many NCR characters to talk to than CL. They seem better in a way just because there are more "characters". In CL you can only talk to a handful of people and nearly all of them are pushing an agenda. There should be some lower level CL related people who just need help with something. I dunno.

All the same, it does seem a bit too polarized.

Not to mention Mr. House and I both have condescending and verbose personalities.

Seriously though, it feels like Mr. House is one of those 'built just for me' type of characters.

Primm- destroyed by CL
Novac-Destroyed by CL
Goodsprings- Turns into ghost town
New Vegas- Destroyed by CL
FOTA- Destroyed by CL

i wish i could say this game is morally grey but i just dont see it

they both forcefully take what they want, but NCR allows them to keep most of their rights afterwards, CL does not

i think CL kinda got shafted in their endings. it doesnt show them as having in postive aspects. maybe if they are included in another game or in a DLC it will do them more justice
