Barter means you know how to negotiate prices.
Not that you know how to carry a crap load of stuff.

Maybe it's an abstraction of the character knowing the values of the items and hence being more eager to hold on to them, leading to better inventorymanagement and thus increased mobility. The fast travel part is just for the convenience of the player, I doubt that the overencumbarance will not affect traveltime (I don't see any reason for it to not). Who knows, though.

all im saying is that i hope barter is not a useless skill in this game because of how many caps you got which in turn sorta made repair useless because you could just use a npc to repair your stuff...

im fine for specializing and stuff but if the skills themselves are useless why am i gonna put the now precious points into them to get cool perks?

Starting to make more sense.

Barter means your somewhat of a merchant/ looter type and thus the most logical skill to determine if you would be a pack rat or be looting enough stuff to need to drag it all back home.

... They have pack brahmins, carts and probably 6-9 in STR stat...
Still makes no sense.

Yeah, but the Long Haul perk + a high bartering skill gives you the illusion that you have everything that a professional barterer would have. Negotiating is a big part of their job, but they also travel long distances with the ability to carry a ton of items. I know it's stupid. They don't physically carry the items themselves. I just don't see the need to nitpick about it. But I understand where you guys are coming from with this. I'm more worried about how some of these perks will effect the actual gameplay in hardcoe Mode, though.

Edit: I like UnDeCafIndeed's explanation. :foodndrink:

Well it's a useful perk, that's for sure. I like it. Just don't like the barter part.

To be fair, it doesn't let you carry more stuff. It just lets you fast-travel when you're encumbered. The explanation in the description of the perk is that your character can pack more effectively for a long trip. Maybe lots of experience as a merchant makes you better at packing your stuff for travel? I don't see where the big problem is...sure, there's no direct, scientific explanation for it, but it is a game.

Yeah, thats called specialization. These perks are uniuqe, unlike FO 3's wich like you said, gave you stat bonuses and none of them really felt rewarding. And most of these perks are only avaidible at level 14 so youll have plenty of time to get your skill points up, just plan ahead my friend.

if barter turns out to be useful beyond being a perk prerequisite, then it's ok. it's just that barter has never been more than a flavor skill in the fallout universe so far.

from the current list, laser commander, math wrath and shotgun surgeon are my picks.
pack rat looks intriguing, assuming it effects ammo, but i can't see myself spending the skill point equivalent of 3-5 levels or so to boost my barter skill

I've always treated barter as a combination of things:
The ability to gauge the relative values of two items
The knowledge of who wants what items the most
The ability to assess any item you find against the above two

So someone experienced in Barter is going to naturally pick up a great many items they encounter because they know that it's valuable to someone, and they're going to naturally have an easier time knowing where to go to sell it (fast travel).

I'm just in a very nitpicky mood because of the hype.
Will probably calm down later and accept it.
But until then: /rage

Shotgun Surgeon looks cool, I like the picture for it too:P Don't really like math wrath as I don't use VATS too much. The Professional looks nice! Mainly because I'm going to make a character very similar.

Are you saying that having 300K Caps in your inventory was useful? I am pretty sure it didn't do anything for you. Who needed to buy anything outside of a few schematics and maybe some rare ammo here and there.
It was definitely useful and it definitely did a lot for me. Having ridiculous amounts of money is always useful. It cost me over 5000 caps to repair my Vengeance Gatling Laser each time, which I used regularly. If you've used that thing then you'll know yourself that it's durability is.. lacking. Same goes for the Eugene minigun, which I also used often. Power armour is also quite expensive to repair, although thankfully it's far more durable than the previously mentioned weapons. So that more or less covers the repairs.

I also had to spend a fair amount on Electron Charge packs, I'm sure you can guess why. Although I was alright for 5mm ammo, since technically I never carried 300,000 caps in my inventory. I carried it in 5mm ammo, which I could sell for 0.9 caps each (incidentally exactly the same as 5.56 ammo, big hint to what I was doing there lol) whenever necessary thanks to my high barter skill.

The caps were useful in that it would have have been impossible to play the game the way that I did without them. Barter is useful. Perhaps too useful.

Wait, let me get this straight:

A perk that lets radiation HEAL YOU is fine. However, one that lets skilled merchants make long journeys with lots of items is the one that people claim is unrealistic and makes no sense?

If Pack Rat allows everything weighing less than 2 to weigh half as much, does that include ammo? If so this will be a must for big gun users.
