If New Vegas Could Do it

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 5:34 pm

NV was far closer to F1 & F2 than F3 was.
Exactly. NV brought back some of the Fallout elements that Fallout 3 didn't have. Also the game takes place in California. Just like the Fallout 1 and 2.

Josh Sawyer, Project Director of Obsidian, personally took a road trip through the Mojave when they decided they would make the game in Las Vegas. Many of the locations seen in game actually exist or are otherwise based on real world locations, such as:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/Goodsprings_Nevada_Pioneer_Saloon_2.jpg
http://newenergyandfuel.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/solartowermojavedesert.jpg
http://www.playtimelasvegas.com/wp-content/uploads/buffbillscoaster.jpg (Primm, the roller coaster and real life counterpart of the Bison Steve Hotel)

Obsidian believed they shouldn't cover a location unless they can do it justice, hence why they chose a location close to California and why the trip was viewed as neccesary.

You're not telling me anything I don't already know. In fact, I have been to a number of the locations in New Vegas in person. I live only a few hours from Vegas.

Because in a game were nukes devistated man-kind, I want to live in city with running water, electricity and brightlights.
Yes i know F1 and F2. Fallout 3 is still the best depction of what should happen.

But it's been 200 years. And Vegas had minimal bomb impacts by comparison.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed less than 100 years ago and they're inhabitable. And before someone starts with the "bigger bombs were used in the fallout universe!!" arguments, the older bombs are actually dirtier. Newer bombs being produced these days cut back on nuclear fallout while increase the blast, since the goal is to obliterate your enemy, NOT poison the entire earth for centuries.

Either way, the argument is ridiculous as none of us can properly test the impact of such bombs. HOWEVER Fallout 1 set the standard of the impact in this fictional world, and thus the series should try to hold CONSISTENCY with that standard. FO3 is the odd-man out when it comes to the standard.

If Obsidian didn't provide a totally accurate depiction of Mojave flora in the retro future then new Vegas must definitely svck.

I don't know why you quoted me anyway. I was just pointing out you were wrong in what you said about no bombs dropping.

Some one plucked out one of many reasons why I didn't like New Vegas, then you pointed out that warheads went off in the general area (to dispute my claim), then I pointed out that even if they did it wouldn't kill desert plant life, which is resilient, even to nuclear explosions and fallout. I explained that I was raised in the desert (geographically, I love it). After playing RDR and experiencing how Rockstar nailed it (I haven't been home in decades), the desert depicted in New Vegas was so far off the mark that it just wasn't believable for me. FO3 was more believable for me than was New Vegas. Sorry, but I suppose it'd be like someone depicting your hometown in a way that was completely flawed. It would bother you.

i personally hated the fact that in new vegas you would be killed by certain people because of the clothes you wore. i understand that its more realistic that way but they should have put that in the hardcoe mode instead. imo obsidian took the fallout franchise and bent it over a pinball machine and [censored] it. but thats just me.

I understand what you're saying but, wouldn't personally agree re: the hard core thought.

I guess we all have different limits at which suspension of disbelief and/or enforcement of reality start to make the game experience a little less fun.

For me, I well understand that going without eating, sleeping, etc. is not realistic.

However, being forced to eat, or whatever else, by the game lessens the fun for me, regardless of it not being logical that I can run around for days without sleeping, etc.

Where things start to break down for me is in the type of example I mentioned earlier ... in which I'm allowed to, as a stranger, wander in off the street to a palace/fortress and hear whatever leader's overall war strategy whil dressed in the opposing faction's uniform and without anyone having previously met me.

I mean, if I'd previously joined the storm cloaks and later shown up in imperial armor, it would seem reasonable to me that people would just assume I'd been spying on the "imperial dogs".

But to show up as a stranger wearing the same stuff and have no one pay me any attention at all is too much of a stretch for me.

That being said, I had similar thoughts in various situations when I played NV ... but, no game is perfect in this regard and I don't expect any to be.

And, like I said, guess we all have a different line in respect of where reality/fun stops and illogic/annoyance begins.

Certainly nothing to get bent out of shape about or argue over who's "right" and who's "wrong".

F3 is a depiction of shortly after - it makes little sense for the timeframe it's in and it's just false to say it's most in keeping with Fallout because it isimply is not.

Fallout was always more about people's efforts to rebuild in a world ravaged by nuclear war - it wasn't supposed to be like the bombs dropped yesterday in the first place - Bethesda made it like that. And made a world that makes no sense with things plonked here and there randomly for no reason. And everyone lives on an inexuastable supply of 200 year old food while the hidden factory spews out a never ending stream of killer robots that patrol the landscape. It's a typical Beth game - great fun, but makes no sense whatsoever.

Again i know the lore, Mr. House has lasers on-top of the lucky 38 and launch codes for the missles taking out almost all of them but some made it through due to lack of upgrade software or OS, and some made it through though didnt hit any of the city.

But again it seemed like there was no survival feel to Nv, compared FO3.
But if that isnt enough the colors used in the game were to bright IMO, they could have done a better job giving NV that more desprate feel.

Food and water needs in TES setting would also be redundant. In Fallout they're less common, but in TES? No.

As I said (think I brought up hardcoe mode first), I think SOME form of hardcoe mode would be nice, but a direct Fallout equivalent would be silly.

That's your opinion, but understand that if they did as you ask, they'd sacrifice all realism of the storyline. NO progression after 200 years is just madness. They went for a realistic approach. Chris Avellone agrees with you, saying NEXT Fallout game should be knocked down a peg so we can "restart" from directly post-apocalyptic, Josh Sawyer wants to move forward with post-post apocalyptic worlds.

I also just wanna point out that Fallout is primarily about war imo, NOT post-apocalyptic settings. I also think it's wiser to make it primarily about war rather than the setting, as the first option offers more for the storyline. The second option only offers aesthetics.

And before someone starts with the "bigger bombs were used in the fallout universe!!" arguments.
Some major global cities were not completely destroyed by the explosions because of their relatively low explosive yields, and cities such as http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Washington,_D.C. even managed to maintain intact buildings despite relatively close detonations.
So I guess the nukes in the Fallout universe have low explosive yields. They may have bombs with higher yields. But the game does have that 50's setting to it. So the nukes the Fallout universe uses may be nukes from that era. But I don't know how powerful the nukes from that era are.

What's more believable about F3? Didn't have the same cactus issues for you? Come now - F3 is TOTALLY unbelievable - it makes no coherent sense whatsoever. A tower full of rich people plonked there for no reason with no indication of how the hell they sustain themselves? A Peter Pan city of crapness? People running round dressed as super heroes? Super mutants plonked at random locations for no reason? caravans that don't even sell food that can't survive once the player hits level 10? Man, you could go on all day about how little sense F3 makes.

I wouldn't mind this little addition at all. I can understand the ones who feel when putting on - insert faction armor here - resests your reputation with a - insert faction with good reputation with here - may consider that a bug. I thought it was too, but it isn't. That is a design decision - the NCR armor, or which ever faction armor you choose, you wear disguises who you actually are, even to them.

Regardless of their feelings towards the courior, while wearing their armor, them and most others will see you that way.

Don't forget you have Super mutants that are bigger than a 2 story house. That have a car door shield the size of a smart car and a fire hydrant the size of an average fence board.

Most of that stuff has backstory..................................and you could go on about how new vegas dosnt make sense too, but again not the point of this thread.
And im tired of debating this, if you dont like skyrim or Fo3, no one is forcing you to play them or post here.
My opinion is I loved Fo3, skyrim, oblivion and the STORY/ lore behind nv.
Every game has things that could make it better.
Skyrim honestly dosnt have that many IMO.

Different developers, but I get what you are saying. it's not "different design techniques" its common sense.

With every group theirs one that hates them. Just like in real life if you have one gang and you walk in the territory that belongs to another gang and the 2 gangs at war. There not simply going to make a comment about it and let you pass. Or let you join them.

If Bethesda and obsidian merged I think the two would make a game that would outshine the call of duty campaign and take the sale record.

I always end up disliking threads like these. I wish people would stop posting threads of "If Obsidian did it this way" or similar titles. They may be started with good intentions, but they ultimately boil down to pointless arguments. We all have certain likes and dislikes. I prefer Fallout 3 over FNV, but that doesn't mean FNV was bad at all. I really liked FNV as well and I also really like Skyrim. These are different games, they all have flaws and I think we should leave it at that. Discussing hypotheticals really doesn't do anything but lead to these long drawn out arguments that no one wins.

Can we start talking about features? 7 pages later this is getting crazy.

I agree with both the OP and Plebians arguments

Skyrim was designed that people can access most content with a play through. Was this a good choice? maybe, maybe not. With this design choice its up to the player to not join factions, to not wear opposing armors, etc and so forth.

I think faction armor is a great idea, but it would be hard to make ti work perfectly. As someone said, (how NV did it) If i a super awesome NCR, then immediately switch to legion armour, i get attacked. It is kinda weird. My BOS gets attacked on sight, but im roleplaying a BOS, so thats okay.

a non dragonborn warrior becoming a arch is weird as well, but again, if you dont want to join the college, dont. Its hard to do so sometimes, but hey its a choice.

personally like all the Morrowind lovers, i want a morrowind remake or morrowind based content as dlc. but hey, thats my opinion.

Morrowind had some faction opposition, faction restrictions (skills), if you wore a Indoril helmet or chestpeice, your attacked by the ordinators on site. That was cool.

The programming for perfect reality simulation is hard. So many things to consider like rank of faction, armor your wearing, things youve done,

NV had a neat feature that each town had a different opinion of you, skyrim should be more like this. but hey. whatever

I think Bethesda likes things to work right then not perfectly (no bug jokes please), Apple des it for example, apple does not have flash on their ipad and phones because they feel that it doesnt work properly yet. Which is fair. Flash on the android for example is shady at best. Why add a feature that your not confident in with your product.

I think that Bethesda needs to have more diverging paths in their quests. More grey ground too. Many quest are either Hero, or kill innocents to get the deadric artifact.

I apologize to the randomness of this post, but its hard to keep up with 7 pages of rage
