I suppose so. You wanna know a linear Final Fantasy game? Try Mystic Quest, you seem like you've been around a while so you should know what that is. I actually like it tho, incredibly linear, over simplified, but it's funny as hell.
Was in the first batch of games i bought for SNES along with super metroid and super mario allstars :'> Anyway when i said ff is a linear game i compared it with every other game out there. For example i consider Hellgate London or Planescape torment (my favourite rpg) semi linear when compared to Gothic 3 or Risen.
You have to look at it from a design perspective. Not everyone that plays your game will be quick on the uptake. Gonna use WoW as an example because it's good for this. Back in the day, before it started catering to casual players, you use to have to actually quest to quest. You got a quest and you HAD to read it to figure out where to go and what to do, there were no arrows pointing you in the right direction. (Unless you downloaded addons) Fast forward to the present, you dont have to read [censored]. Ever. Just pick up a quest and go to the ? on the map. Pretty damn straight forward. Why did they do this? Because as the game's user base grew people were complaining quests where to hard to find/do. And resorting to addons. Blizzard does not like addons, although they allow them. But they do everything in their power to make them obsolete. With that said, you can turn off that [censored]. If you wanna actually quest during your quest you can still play like you did in vanilla. They have just added the option to show you where to go for the lazy/less experienced gamers. Maybe Bethesda/Obsidian should take a page out of that book and allow you to toggle quest tracking.
Yea i've been playing it... If i was a designer i admit i would do the same, but... as a player i'll always try to and should rant about it in order to keep some kind of balance.
Anyway I'm not against a series of quests that guide you in a certain direction in a game and don't want absolutely everything to be abstract, but in a game such as this i would also like a lot of free roaming as well. Free roaming as the one you could do if you were there for real. It greatly adds to my feeling of immersion.
