They might be able to plan if every single series went to 7 games but rest assured the near impossibility of this proves that the NHL does not pre-schedule the playoffs 7-9 months in advance. It was only a few seasons ago when this scheduling problem came into conflict when they moved up the start of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals and made the first two games back to back to avoid competing with the NBA.
2000-01 season.
This is way false. They were slaughtered because the NY Rangers were a hungrier team, which showed in the Rangers' previous series by a close call against the Devils. As for the Canucks, their path to the finals was not that difficult at all. They went 4-3 (7 games vs Calgary), 4-1 (Dallas), 4-1 (Toronto) before losing in 7 to the Rangers in the SCF. Linden wasn't 100% that series, and while he wasn't much of a threat back then like Bure was, it was sort of a Steve Yzerman situation with the Red Wings in 2002.. where his captaincy provided some inspiration more than just points. Wasn't enough obviously.
Not confused at all. I just made an error and forgot to add to that part that it was last season the Wings had one single day off after a Game 7 versus the Coyotes before playing a well rested Sharks, relative to how Vancouver got the shaft this time around (in hindsight they won Game 1, but still). I also don't like the fact that the Sharks get more rest by the league this time, deciding to put Vancouver first.
