Come Fly With Me quest corrupts save files.

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 10:31 am

kind of a double post for me but I want to bump this thread as it actually does have a bethesda rep post in it.

I think its important to know there noticing the issue though I myself would like an actual time frame here of when i can start playing the game.

Has alot of bugs but dammit I love the game so lets keep this fresh in there minds so we can get this going sooner ....if possible

The teams at Obsidian and Bethesda have been working on this one and it'll be resolved in an update for the game. More details when I've got them...

Thanks for responding. It's a little staggering how badly people are being stonewalled on bug issues. I've had no success in getting in touch with customer support at all. Some very poor customer relations from the organisation as a whole, so thanks for being the exception, even if you don't have any details on fixes or ETAs.

Going through the game files in the GECK I have found several instances where global and quest variables that should only be either a 0 or a 1 CAN end up being set to other values through sheer bad luck (play triggering different scripts for otherwise independent quests in such an order that an inauspiciously shared variable or global has +1 applied to it twice or more). In all these cases these script issues seem as though they could be fixed by changing lines such as "x=x+1" to "x=1" since I do not THINK any of them are intended to be counters but rather 1/0 on/off flags. All of these that I have found so far center around Vault 3 and REPCON, but even looking for these potential problem causers is quite time consuming.

Unfortunately I can't be sure if this is even the source of the problem or if all these variables really should never be set to 2 or more. If this is the problem though I'm sure they would be quite close to a patch by now. The down side is that rendering those corrupted save games would require a separate routine or stand alone program that searched for malformed variables/flags and set them to acceptable values. That potential solution is further complicated by the fact that it is not automatically obvious what, by the time of the last save, the actual proper state of those flags should be. So even if one were to develope a save parser that searched for specific variables and corrected them one would not be guaranteed that the end result would not be a differently broken save game. It would probably load, but quests and flags may be permenately broken. It's unlikely that bethesda themselves would release a save-game repairing program and if anyone did it is uncertain how useable the resulting fixed save would really be.

So- a fix to the cause of this problem is likely coming very soon. If I were far more capable and comfortable using the GECK I would work on a community fix myself, but I do not think I could even hope to put out anything workable without spending a week or more of trial and error grind work that might not even produce results.

I did this quest last night and didn't have any trouble with my saves later (and I've played many hours since). I used the man hole. I used the ladder. I went out for ingredients/parts. I took the space suit. I wore the space suit. I let the ghoul downstairs go after telling him about his girlfriend. I launched the rockets. I talked to the fake ghoul. I did pretty much everything there was to do.

The only thing I had done earlier in the game (before getting to Repconn) that others might not have is that I turned off all of the auto-save functions (no auto-save on sleep, entering buildings, or anywhere). Auto-saves would sometimes bork your saves in Oblivion and FO3 too so I figured I might as well just not use it and avoid any potential issue.

i got save corruption at Valut 3 and Lucky 38 Underground Securtion facility where you can cause an overload or insert the the chip. :\ its seems save corruption is tied to quests only.

Stay away from VAULT 3 It causes the CTD. Loaded a manual save before entering that area and my autos and quicks load fine and don't cause CTD.

Guys,
Same thing for me but all was well with first playthrough but on a character remake and restart of game, I too cannot get past launching the rockets. Every game save after that is 'corrupt'.
I am now reloading game from Steam. I have a LOT of hours in this game!!

I'm finishing this quest right now. Damn I'm scared. I'm going to back up my saves just in case.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I found a problem with this quest and a solution too, that works for me. At the end of the quest, Jason Bright will have a cutscene type monologue. In some instances, he'll not finish what he is saying. He'll start to talk, stop, and then he should turn slightly and talk again. Basically, if Jason doesn't apologize to Chris Haverson, then your game may get borked at that point. I've played several characters through this quest, so I caught it immediately when it didn't fire correctly. HTH

In my circumstance, the monolog from Chris Bright was perfect, as was Manny's response (I played it as 'good guy') . I then launched the rockets. Atfter that, all saves are not loadable.
I did not have this with my first character, where I did not have this issue at all after going through the same scenes, so I am really perplexed. But, it is reapeatable, so the devs can fix it, i'm sure.

I have had the same problem with the Come fly with me quest. I have completed it twice and any save made during or after the quest was completed is corrupt. I reloaded the save I made in the Mojave outpost before I went to confront the nightkin and that one worked. Saves that I have since then(w'o doing the Come Fly with Me quest) have been loading just fine. Thanks to this thread I now know that I should probably avoid Vault 3 too:) Anyway, I hope Bethesda can patch this soon. Any idea when/if a patch is coming out?

Gstaff posted that a hotfix for the corrupt save issue would be out early this week.

I would love to get this hotfix because I saved the game inside REPCONN and can't do anything with avoiding entrances, quests, killing someone etc.

For what it is worth: not a single one of my save games during Come Fly With Me has shown any signs of being corrupt. Now, the only thing I went out of my way to do was not carry any caravan cards in my inventory all the time.

Problem solved after the last patch. Thanks for it Bethesda, but next time let us know you're working on it before we're completely mad at your apparent negligence and test games better because it was a critical bug and it wasn't the rare kind.

Just an FYI, this patch fixed all my corrupted saves. If you quit playing out of frustration like me, you should be able to pick up at the point where your save was corrupted. Glad they managed to fix the issue and the saves themselves.
