Come Fly With Me quest corrupts save files.

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 1:46 am

Bump.

And to the poster above that suggested this issue might have something to do with harlan, I think you may be on to something. I am too tired to deal with it tonight but might try tomorrow, since it seems to be my only other option to play this game until they get off their ass and fix the game crippling bugs.

These issues are super frustrating. I have the dreaded corrupt save bug.

I can say with 100% certainty that the corrupt save bug is not caused by picking up the space suit. I went through the rocket factory and picked up everything, got to the point where I need to collect materials for the ghouls in “come fly with me” and then saved it outside of the rocket factory.

At this point in the save I have: picked up the space suit(though I believe it’s being stored in my hotel room on this save), I have also given them the isotope, but not the other item. This save file loads 100% of the time with no issues.

Now, when I go back inside and give them the other item and do the story event at the factory, after saving that file outside the factory – that file is corrupted 100% of the time.

Also – since you mentioned it I figured I would chime in about it. I thought like you did that I’ll just avoid that quest(come fly with me) and go and do other stuff. Closest thing to do to novac is helios, so I went to check that place out. After some long conversations inside, I go outside, do my work at the terminals, then save both outside and inside the tower, both save files were corrupted.

In the helios save, I had started with my save outside the rocket factory, the uncorrupted one that loads 100% of the time, so the same conditions applied to the helios encounter.

After doing some more testing with my game saved outside the rocket factory(btw basemant is clear of nightkins already) - I have discovered that giving these items to havesham or whatever his name is not the trigger of the corrupt save, its entering the basemant at this point. I have taken this save, walked into the basemant, saved, loaded, and crashed.

Now. The reason I think you might be onto something about harland, is because prior to reading your post, I didn't even know he existed. I never came across him. Didn't find a corpse. This is, according to the wiki site, because I cleared the basemant of nightkin before talking with him. So the wiki says if this happens he just disappears. So I couldn't try your kill harland method =( though i really wanted to. I may have an older save before clearing out the basemant, but that sounds incredibly painful. Where exactly is harland located? Is he in the room with all the bear traps, hidden landmines, and exploding computer? If that is the case - doesn't entrance to that room require a key from the nightkin boss, thus having to kill at least him(and probably agroing everything else in the basemant simultaneously)? Or can you pick that lock and thats how the encounter begins?

Anyways, I think mr double space suit is the root cause of all the problems with this quest. If you never meet him, he exists somewhere in limbo ever plaguing your saved game files with corruption. If you do end up meeting him - it seems these people are the ones that don't have this bug issue at all. Can anyone confirm that? Has anyone encountered this save game corruption after speaking to harland and/or finishing his little side quest? If you did get this save game bug, and you have spoken to harland, go find him and execute him with the console and report back whether it solves your problem please.

Also - 6 pages of people all with the same GAME CRIPPLING BUG MAKING IT UNPLAYABLE AND NOT A SINGLE RESPONSE FROM ANY SUPPORT STAFF. How about letting us know that you're aware of the damned problem and an ETA on a fix for a bug THAT MAKES YOUR GAME UNPLAYABLE.

Does there need to be a class action lawsuit before you start taking this matter seriously?

Well they are getting very bad rep press wise.
"Buggiest game of the century" as one called it.

I still cant believe "a testing team of over 300 people" (as was claimed in an interview) and no one ran into corrupt savegames.
It happens way too much and in way too many places (this quest, the vaults etc).

So while waiting for a fix im just laughing, as they are ruining their own reputation with every day it takes them and with every excuse they give.

Yeah- I had the glitch occur in a save game where I met him and did his quest. In that save game I had not yet gone to Vault 3 either (another source of similar complaints) which blew an earlier theory I had.

do you happen to still have an old save game after you talked with him but before the rockets get launched? So you could test and see if console killing him would alleviate the bug?

Also - where is he when you meet him? I can't find anything describing where I'll meet this guy.

I don't - the saves I have from that playhtough where I am anywhere near him are corrupt. I'll try to test that out when I get there again though- assuming I feel like playing again before this is fixed.

As far as where he is- you know the room Davison is located in (boss nightkin in the basemant)? Well Harlan is located in a room right past that one at the end of the same hallway. You'll know you're there when you see a dead nightkin on the ground who you did not kill. Right through the door behind that dead nightkin is a large room full of traps and he should talk to you as soon as you enter.

thanks that is what I thought. However my prob with that is I had to use the key from davison to open that door if i remember right, unless you can lockpick it - which seems to be the only logical solution left.

just ignore that entire quest line and don't go to that facility its optional anyways. it svcks restarting your game but my game giltched out at vault 3, i died to motor runner and game couldn't load any saves in vault 3. No idea what causes save corruption its the worst bug but i am restarting the game and ignoring that area entirely (Don't go in the test Site building). How do 4 saves get corrupted at different minutes and times i wouldn't know. That whole area seems bugged for some and not others it seems something is triggering the corruption

anyone know what debugSaveBuffer does in fallout.ini? id really

No one is posting what kind of platform you are running. Nor are you posting what kind of video card you have. This info would help get a consensus of why this is happening.

I talked to Harland about the quest while in the Rocket basemant, but did nothing else. I left through the manhole, and re-entered the basemant. I then loaded a save and had no problems. I haven't had a single CTD yet in this game.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, ATI 4760 and using Patch 1 (not 2 the latest).

Maybe people with problems are Nvidia? Or Windows 7? Or patch #2? Too many variables, like I said you need a consensus of info to eliminate what i can and cant be. Simple as that.

Well... the same glitch also happens for Xbox360 users after/during the "come fly with me quest" so I'm doubting it's platform dependent.

I completed the quest without the corruption bug to occur. I don't know if it helps, but I completed it with disabled emotions "toggleemotions". Just tried it again with activated emotions, bug didn't occur.

Throwing in additional information:
- never touched the space suit
- had the needed components before entering the facility, by luck.
- had the model rockets and the "fuel canister".
- I own a u.s. uncut version and play in German language.

Maybe it helps to locate the cause of the bug.

I did this quest, leaving the area alot of times and I didn't get the bug either. Things I did was:

- never touched the space suit
- I followed the quest arrows to the items needed, both items were in combat zones. One item was picked up from a body on the ground and the other I can't remember where but, I didn't buy or steal the items. ( I picked the item that he tells you to check the merchants for first, but I didn't want to do that one, so then I told him I wanted to get the other item first.)
- I did the quest for the guy at the top of the room with lots of traps on the floor. Later on I talked to him upstairs where the other ghouls were.
- I used the speach line to tell the guy he was staying behind. Then I talked him out of being mad about it.
- I found 2 launching areas and can't remember if I was able to launch the rocket from inside the building or if I had to leave the building to get the rockets to launch. There was alot of pressing buttons with too low science skill to launch in one area. In the other area, I think I pressed a button to start the launch but can't be sure about it.

ETA: I have WinXp, service pack 3.
pentium® D Cpu 3.40Ghz.
3.39 Ghz 2.00 Gb of ram.
Ati Radeon HD 4800 series video card.

Seriously. I have lost all progress between the old saves disappearing issue and this quest corrupting saves, about 14 hours worth of gameplay. At this point I have zero desire to even play this game again if they fix it (doubtful) and I certainly don't have any desire to buy any of their future products if this atrocious quality and level of support is indicative of their culture.

This is what is crashing my game.
In come fly with me, the part that breaks my saved games is when you have gotten all the parts for them and they are ready to launch, all that is left is for you to go up to the flight deck and launch them. When you enter the main building that is when it breaks. If you leave out the ladder and go outside, everything is fine, I tried to enter the building from their but it still breaks the game. So you can do all the quest but the final part. It's not the part about the rocket launching or anything it s just you entering the building. I tried it several ways and no matter what I did when I entered the building all saves from their on were broken.

My specs
Windows 7 64bit
8800GT
4gb
quad core 660

I think Windows 7 is causing some of the bugs. I have a new computer with Windows 7 ultimate, 32/64 bit. I could not get fallout 3 to work on it without it crashing the game alot. That's why I'm playing fallout new vegas on my WinXp computer.

Maybe there are some Win 7 specific bugs- but this is not one of them. It is not even exclusive to the PC as it has been on ALL platforms (PS3 and Xbox as well as various Windows versions)

I spent alot of time dying and getting lost doing this quest. I was convinced the entrance to the basemant was where the rockets shoot from, so I kept trying to get up there and running into all the deathclaws.

I did re-start after finishing the quest when I realized I needed 6 endurance for the long haul perk. So I'll be going back through there agian.

I'll keep a save before going in, then the usual 3 while doing the quest. I might pick up the space suit to see if I get the bug. The one thing I never use is the auto save. I also have them turned off in the game settings.

Yeah, it's becoming frustrating buying games lately. I can deal with a dog without eyes, but corrupt save files?! What the hell? I suppose no one was told we were buying a beta version... I'm really pissed about this situation because Bethesta don't even say "hey, we read this already and we're working on this fix". Do you really test your games? I can't believe a single soul tested it before lauching it officially with so many bugs happening to so many people in such crucial points we could hardly miss, like THE DAMN MAIN QUEST...

I have already posted a workaround that has fixed it for multiple people.

1) Kill Harland or Get him killed BEFORE sending Bright down to the rockets.
2) Problem solved

I've read that, unfortunately if I want to do that I have to lose about 10 hours of gameplay to go back to a point where I can actually even get to harland.

Furthermore - that doesn't fix the myriad of other corrupt save issues throughout the game.

There is no excuse for corrupted save files. It's practically the only thing that MUST work, and it doesn't.

Agreed. What's the point of having these forums? Is it so fans can help fans? So they can idly vent their frustrations into a void? Or will someone pay attention to their customers?? Is there a tech support number we can call? Does Bethesda support their products?? This thread has been up for over a week, with no reply!

It seems that is what most support forums boil down to these days, at least every one I have been on recently, maybe with the exception of Mafia 2 who actually listed and responded to what their fans had to say.

It seems companies just put up these forums so that customers can have one single place to voice their concerns and thus easier to ignore. No support techs, just some guy paid to check forums and add [censored] over people's colorful frustrated words.

Anyways, guess I'll lose 10 hours of gameplay and avoid THE GAME CRIPPLING BUG, and hopefully hard saving every 10 minutes, on both the inside and outside of locations will be enough to prevent me from ever having to rely on corrupt save files.

Ya know what though - I shouldn't have to reload a save file every single time just to ensure I'm not exacerbating a corrupt save file.

This is the single most game crippling issue I've ever seen in any video game, even a week after launch.

I got this bug the game ctd after I completed the quest when I went down to talk to fake ghoul. I had taken the space suit so I thought it was that, I reloaded a old save two hours earlier in the room with harland. Annoyed by this I quickly did the favour for harland and also the davy, then got the ghouls down and avoided the space suit like the plague, ran out got the stuff together went back completed the quest and it ctd again.

At this point I had to reload a 10 hour last save back which had no ties with this quest, the reason I got this bug is because I had already left the facility in the previous save (when I saved in the room with harland I had previously left the facility come back and then saved it) the reason I left the facility was because the night kin where to strong for me to kill, I had poor weapons, I believe this is whats causing the bug at least for me because I completed the quest again never left the place only to aquire the parts for the rocket and no ctd occured.

This Quest must be done all in one go.
