I blame the explicit giving of orders stuff just to writers. Every faction does this. Join the Companions, Empire, Cloaks.. they all treat you like crap at first. The Empire can barely muster an apology. It could easily turn players away. The player is left to decide strictly on general sentiments about the Empire - outside of the game - to make their decision about it. Same goes for the Blades, I guess.

Yep. I'm old.... I've been playing RPGs since the mid-70s. I think you're probably right about the writers not "doing it right". Thing is, the blades treat you like crap not just at first but ALWAYS.... I didn't get far enough with either faction questline to know what they do.
