truth about modsmodders

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:45 am

The funny thing is that I've never seen a modder say that. They're usually the ones improving on a specific aspect of the game, or tweaking graphics, etc.

WHAT????! Have you been to the modding section?

and way to constrew their posts

I see

"and if you ask me"

-a statement about a well known aspect of Beth-

and

"in my opinion"

>_>

If you put the words "In my opinion" in front of an opinionated statement like "The game is shallow and boring without modification," then it doesn't actually make the statement any less extreme. The words "in my opinion" are usually redundant, since it's clear that someone is expressing their opinion (though some people on this forum seem to confuse their opinion with objective fact, so maybe it's not that redundant).

Actually, I believe you said you wouldn't have paid full price for it.

More as a protest than due to reduction of it's perceived value, though

I have a problem with people saying that the original product is worthless without mods. And yes, the developers are artists: writers, graphic artists, designers, etc. Unless you've actually dedicated a significant chunk of your life to making a work of art (even if you earned *gasp* money from it) and then had someone tell you that it was so bad they wouldn't use it without modifying it, then you don't get to comment on how unbelievably rude it is to say this to the development team.

Worthless is an exaggeration. Unplayable or annoying? For some yes.

Personal preferences are always subjective. There were some oversights. There were omissions. You can complain about them or you can go about fixing it and/or playing it the way you prefer it, the latter is vastly more constructive. The day you become insulted by constructive criticism you'd better become a hermit.

An example:
The UI is horrid for many PC players tastes. And for many of those people a mod like http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=3863 fixes that. That isn't an insult to the creator(s) of that UI. It's constructive criticism on how some (or a great many in this case) believe it could be better.

To be honest? I would think twice about getting Skyrim full price if it weren't for mods yes. Not because I disrespect the love, sweat and tears the devs put into it. But because I would know I would like the experience a lot less, since Skyrim does have some flaws imho. Modability fixes those flaws for me, and for that reason Bethesda's games are insta-pre-order for me.

Again 1138, don't put your value as the subject under attack, its not. people aren't going out of their way to attack the value you put on it (well now anyway)

-You- Enjoy Skyrim in all its forms no?

and Bethesda is happy with the abbotloads of money in the coffers and overall success of Skyrim yes?

then in your case, everyone that matters is happy.

why u gonna run after people who aren't?

Mods have fixed things Bethesda ignores. Just because you are either not aware of them or don't care about that particular issue, doesn't mean the fix isn't done. I personally think Bethesda should have someone review mods (especially bug fixes), and incorporate the good ones into the base game, so everyone can use them.

Seriously, this game has made at least a few hundred million dollars for Bethesda. They can afford to have someone take a couple days every so often to just install mods and test them. Then that person would select the good ones and submit them to the in-house game svn.

To expand a little from earlier, this is from a related thread:

MODS:
  • better graphics
    • high res texture packs
    • realistic blood and gore
    • realistic lighting
    • realistic water textures
    • high res night skies
  • improved audio (I linked the three below earlier on this thread, believe it's page 2)
    • The Wilds
    • Dungeons
    • Civilization
  • realism / immersion
    • camping mods to combat the elements
    • added dangers such as frostbite and freezing water
    • improved quest text; your log now describes where you can find your objective so you can keep the HUD off 100% of the time
    • "Wars in Skyrim" mod adds random battles throughout the world-- stumble on a group of farmers trying to take down a giant, for example
    • Civil War mod adds Imperial vs Stormcloak battles throughout Skyrim
    • longer days
  • combat
    • tougher dragons
    • tougher enemies
    • improved kill cams
  • extra goodies
    • faster horses
    • moar dragon lewt (o word?!)
    • new dungeons
    • new homes
    • new weapons
    • new spells
    • new perks

I mod because I enjoy customizing the game, not because I think it needs to be "fixed." Modding also extends the life of the game by keeping it fresh with new content, and making mods has given me an even greater appreciation for the hard work that the devs put into this game. Try building a Dwemer ruin!

I do look forward to the quest mods that will come out. I tend not to mod these games a lot, but I do like to play quest mods.

He didn't criticize or demean modders, which, I'm assuming, is the part of the community you're referring to. He criticized people who call the game unplayable without mods.

I thought the OP meant that people should be asking Bethesda to fix the problems in the game rather than saying "mods will fix it" because a fix by the modders is not a solution for the majority of players who are playing on a console.

I am by no means saying the game is unplayable here, but there are lots of things Bethesda could have easily implemented that were fixed by modders even before the creation kit came out. Here are just a few examples of things that could be included in the Options menu for 360 and PS3 players that were impleted as mods prior to creation kit:

Darker dungeons where uninhabited
torches that stay lit when dropped
sneak difficulty slider
slider that would affect monster spawn level
toggle for compass
toggle for compass icons
toggle for sneak crosshair

Because there is no option for the last three items on the list, I am playing with the entire HUD turned off, so I cannot even see the invisible health/magicka/stamina bars that Beth worked so hard on, Yet, everytime I post requesting that Bethesda implement some of these features, some PC user jumps in and says "Just buy a PC" those things are already fixed by the modders. That is not a good answer.

I agree with the OP to the extent that he is saying that these types of issues should be fixed by Bethesda, rather than always deferring to the modders.

Mods = better graphics, better audio, improved combat, realism/immersion, added content...

It's safe to say that ANYONE who "hates mods" is nothing more than a jealous console player. I'm not trolling, it just had to be said.

Xbox/PS3 players: you jelly dog?
I'm sorry sir, but you are an idiot.

In this thread and in another about* a similar subject you make a valid point, and then just ruin it all by making a stupid, childish and downright elitist comment like your last line here.
Honestly, you are either an idiot, a child, or some random elitist with nothing better to do with your time.

* he just added that same comment above me, but a mod removed the "hurr durr console gamers r jelly of us great pc gamers" bit. ( This wasn't exactly what he said, but it was in the same vein.)

You do realize that you're proving my point, right? I'm also choking on irony, with you calling me childish.

You, sir, are jelly. Don't hate the PC playaz
