Is it sixist?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:04 pm

I wouldn't say sixist, maybe homophobic though.

Let me explain, it might be that the thought of you playing as a female makes you subconsceously think that you're playing in drag or that you're pretending to be a girl which in turn harm your ego's masculinity.

utter ridiculous statement. not agreeing with the homosixual lifestyle and decisions doesn't make one a "homophobe."

it's a charged word made up and defined by political activists.

don't start bringing political points into this conversation. it'll do you good.

Come on, the world is sixist by default, no matter how you try to cover it. Because I don't see women in jobs like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/VysokePece1.jpg or http://www.segodnya.ua/img/forall/a/142089/30.jpg despite all of the equality talk.

'Homophobe' is as political as 'sixist'. The term is not out of place in this discussion, considering the topic title. Calling homosixuality a 'lifestyle' however, is far more political, and disciminatory.

I do agree that the statement you quoted was ridiculous though. Not all homosixuals are feminine, not all transvestites are homosixual and regardless of the logic behind the feeling, if playing a girl makes you feel as if you're in drag, choosing not to isn't sixist or homophobic. Calling others gay or transgender because they don't feel the same way would be.

I believe there is a serious agenda at work globally to displace males from their rightful place, the emasculation of males at work in media is overbearing. Portraying them as idiots, fools, weaklings and women as the leaders and tougher lot? Bah what rubbish.

There is, it was especially strong in the 90's. A movement started by aggressive women who suffer [censored]-envy and are jealous of traditional male power bases, and backed by the sniveling beta-males who grovel before them.

It won't end pretty.

I don't think it's sixist to play as one gender or another. If you identify as that gender, and you're role playing, it makes sense.

I just looked above me to the last comment about the serious agenda to displace males from the their rightful place etc... must be a wind-up. Please be a wind-up. Yikes.

I wouldn't say it's sixist. It's just that in most stories and movies, the hero or one that saves the world is a guy somost people think of guys as the warrior type, not girls.

Can't really answer this without getting too political for this forum
Just to say traditional male powerbases still have too much power but that won't last

edit: and really the 90s a decade dominated by the right-wing an era when women were getting out of control

Oh, boo freaking hoo. There are still plenty of ueber male heroes in media. Because some people envision that women can be heroes, too, doesn't negate that.

Fantasy also doesn't appeal to history or physiology so much as mythology and the ideal. And a lot of mythologies have had female war deities or idealized war heroes. Certainly the Norse do.

Depends:

Are you choosing not to play a female because you feel it will make your character weaker/less capable, or otherwise not as powerful as a male would be?

If so, then yes, you are being sixist. Otherwise; no, you are not.

That's a very odd view of the human race. I'm glad the actual human race never agreed with you.

Having mentioned the idealized female war heroes up above, I should add that in some cases science is catching up and siding with the folklore over older, prejudiced science. Someone mentioned the myth of the amazons, but there's some indication that Iron Age steppe tribes always had female warriors (cf Pokrovka excavations), and some Viking era graves earlier assumed to be male because they had warrior grave goods are now shown by DNA testing to actually be female. The things people think they know are sometimes crap.

I think it was a reference to your saying about being "forced into it, like Tomb Raider"
No, in fact it was just a joke because this sentence imply that he's in the game :
it's just that I'm a male and prefer to stay that way in [...] games
Snipped to make it clearer. Nobody asks you to stay a male or change six, we just ask you to choose the gender of your character. ;)

Sidekicks? Women in the shadow of male powerbase have done their part of horrors. Given how so many wars were inspired by, for or because of women, how they made kings raise and fall, I wouldn't call them sidekicks. Backstabbers maybe?

Its the same movement I discussed earlier that causes academia to go to great lengths and really stretch for examples to attempt to re-define humanity. The things people believe are sometimes crap.

P.S. This just in, a few exceptions does not make a rule invalid.

we might find another race of aliens that has a different system (like startrek race I forgot where males were actually slaves to females) but here its a man's world, mind that I'm not saying women are LESS than a man BUT I'm saying women (in most cultures, yes even westren cultures, check US for example) are well..... different (in a good way)

You have a narrow view of the world. Here's an argument: Women working their way up to high-end officer positions in the military. They start as grunts, just like everybody else.

There is, it was especially strong in the 90's. A movement started by aggressive women who suffer [censored]-envy and are jealous of traditional male power bases, and backed by the sniveling beta-males who grovel before them.

It won't end pretty.

The backlash against the movement is just as vile. 'Snivelling beta-males'? Some men aren't as physically strong as others. Some men have no desire to lead, fight, hunt or do anything traditionally 'macho'. That's fine. Likewise a woman wanting to work, and wanting to earn equal pay for that work, is not demanding anything unreasonable. If she were to demand more money than her male counterparts, purely on the bases of her six, that would be rather inappropriate.

I'd also point out that one of the reasons women aren't shown as ugly 'fools' and 'idiots' in many media products isn't to appease women, but because men would rather see a woman wearing a skin-tight ninja costume and pulling off super-flexible moves than a woman who is fat, smelly and obnoxiously stupid.
